Case Histories - isn't Cambridge photogenic enough?

Somewhat baffled with the BBC version of Kate Atkinson's book. Book is about Cambridge, TV is set in Edinburgh. Jackson Brodie was no hunk in the book ...

S. 'Efrican' mad cat lady in the book hysterical! At the end of Case Histories, when he sees that black cat and calls out the name, looking around furtively.

The Edinburgh location threw me at first, but it's been a long time since I read Case Histories and I quickly got into it. I thought the casting was pretty good and Jason Isaacs makes a hot JB; who seems to have a certain something about him in the novels. Sylvia Syms (cat lady) is a national treasure only jarring character is Phil Davis as Theo Wyre, I find him creepy in everything he does.
Looking forward to tonight's episode.

Most people in edinburgh city centre have english accents

BooToYouToo · 06/06/2011 19:44

Marlinspike - agree, Julia should be more buxom, like Nadia Sawalha before she lost the weight. Loved those dresses though.

The ex-wife has my wardrobe, courtesy of Zara.

Always imagined Jackson would have a broken nose, bit like Jimmy Nail (whatever happened to him?).

peachsmuggler · 06/06/2011 20:36

Agree I though Julia would be a bit less erm polished maybe, but think she was quite good. Liked Fenella whatshername as Amelia.

Jackson is definitely very fanciable in the book, though it is more his character than his buff body. He is quite fit, goes running etc, but I see him as a bit more gnarly.

BitOfFun · 06/06/2011 21:02

Blimey, he is fit as fuck, isn't he?

expatinscotland · 06/06/2011 21:17

Despite his face, yeah, I would. Hell, yeah, baby! :)

expatinscotland · 06/06/2011 21:17

And the gal was married in the book.

BitOfFun · 06/06/2011 21:30

I'm going a bit funny here Blush

expatinscotland · 06/06/2011 21:36

The ex wife has HUGE eyes.

UndiscoveredApprentice · 06/06/2011 21:37

OOO er he is being so masterful!

sungirltan · 06/06/2011 21:38

julia isn't chaotic enough.

louise doesnt look right either - to me that is.

i wouldnt say kate is my total fave. she always manages to sneak some bit of awful animal cruelty in to ehr books that really disturbs me though nothing as bad as whats in behind the scenes but i love her otherwise

UndiscoveredApprentice · 06/06/2011 21:40

if I was his wife I would be dead annoyed about him taking the daughter to work so often.

expatinscotland · 06/06/2011 21:47

Louise is exactly how I'd pictured her from the book.

expatinscotland · 06/06/2011 21:52

The little girl was in Binky's garden IIRC. And in the book she did leave him the money.

UndiscoveredApprentice · 06/06/2011 21:55

yep, but i love the way the cop fooled him into thinking he had got the money lol.

UndiscoveredApprentice · 06/06/2011 21:59

oh, that was very good.

Not often I find this, but I prefer the Jackson Brodie of the TV series than in the book.

BitOfFun · 06/06/2011 21:59

Who was that music by?

expatinscotland · 06/06/2011 22:00

And he found the cat Wink.

megapixels · 06/06/2011 22:03

WTF, is it usual to have scenes like the one with the young Sylvia? Maybe people aren't so shocked easily nowadays but I think some things should remain taboo about being on TV.

QuickLookBusy · 06/06/2011 22:05

I think it may be Nanci Griffith but not a hundred percent certain.

QuickLookBusy · 06/06/2011 22:06

That was for BitOfFun.

BitOfFun · 06/06/2011 22:07

Thanks- it was very beautiful.

QuickLookBusy · 06/06/2011 22:11

Yes my DH would agree, he loves her voice very much.

Unfortunately he isn't here at the moment so I can't call on his very extensive and superior knowlede of old Nanci.

LadyBeagleEyes · 06/06/2011 22:14

Not bad at all, and saying that as Kate Atkinson's biggest fan.
I had my doubts about the casting of Jason Issacs but I can now picture him as Jackson Brodie .
Forgotten how sad the books can be, but I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series.
And I do agree about Julia, she's just not eccentric enough.
