But wouldn't a site that gave the FACTs and offered support for fellow sufferers/victims of these dieseases be better, but not be allowed to have such quotes and images encouraging people to continue.

NomDePlume · 14/11/2005 20:47

I think kama is right about the 'can't see the wood for the trees' element of these sites.

but you can't change the fact that there are people who do WANT to live like that.
and yes, i do agree it is incredibly sad that young, vulnerable people get caught up in it

there are many, many support sites out there that don't encourage it... but you have to WANT to get better to use them!
I spent years telling people that i didn't want to stop hurting myself, and i really didn't

HRHQoQ · 14/11/2005 20:48

Very worrying really - and I do find it rather disturbing that there is now a link to a pro-ana webiste from Mumsnet (via this thread). Anyone searching for pro-Ana websites would probably find this link quite easily now - given that Mumsnet threads are often pretty high up the google rankings . I personally feel this thread is now giving them free 'advertising' which isn't really a great idea IMO.

May be a good point there. It may be possible to have the link removed before the search engine bot thingies come and do their stuff?

However I did just type in pro ana into google and loads came up immediately anyway They are in no way hidden.

starlover · 14/11/2005 20:54

the problem is that a lot of pro-ana sites ARE hidden... you will never get rid of them all

HRHQoQ · 14/11/2005 20:55

Socci - are we looking at the same website - I'm talking about NDP's link.....it looks distinctly pro-ana to me....

Hula - I know there's lots on google I just don't feel it's right that we're linking to one from mumsnet [frown]

It is pro ana, but it used in this thread in a negative way. The thread is condemning these sites. I used the site as an example of what is wrong with pro-ana, how twisted the logic is.

NomDePlume · 14/11/2005 20:58

Oh for f's sake. I'll get it deleted then

I WAS NOT IN ANY WAY APPROVING OF PRO ANA SITES/MOVEMENTS.

HRHQoQ · 14/11/2005 20:59

I know that - I've read the thread.

I just don't feel it's appropriate for a link to be put onto it to 'demonstrate' -

The fact is that there is now a link from mumsnet to a Pro-Ana website - the context of it being put on the thread (IMO) is irrelevant

starlover · 14/11/2005 21:00

ndp i think what QoQ is saying is that mumsnet always comes up high in searches

so if someone searched pro-ana on google a link might come up through mumsnet iyswim?

HRHQoQ · 14/11/2005 21:00

NDP - I never said you were - I simply said I didn't like the fact that there was now a link here.

ameli · 14/11/2005 21:03

This site is disgusting, i would hate to think that if i hasd a daughter she would use this site. i mean how in the world is anorexia a lifestyle, bloody makes me angry

DELETION REQUEST SENT.

HRHQoQ · 14/11/2005 21:07

thanks NDP - it just doesn't feel "right" to me to have the link here.

starlover · 14/11/2005 21:07

yeah but we are technically now sending more traffic to their site... which in turn makes it more popular

also goodle pageranking is based partly on links from other sites. so a top ranking site like this will boost the page rank of anything linkjed from it

NomDePlume · 14/11/2005 21:09

Surely merely mentioning the word on here is raising the profile ?

In that case we should never ever talk about anything vaguely contentious on here ever again, huh ?

Anyone got the number for Boden ?

starlover · 14/11/2005 21:10

i don't think the whole thread should be deleted... just the link.
as qoq is saying... we're giving them extra traffic and raising their profile!

NomDePlume · 14/11/2005 21:12

I have requested the deletion of the link. There is nothing more I can do to speed it up. I have apologised for inadvertently upsetting/irritating/annoying/worrying MNers by posting the damn thing.
