I don't think he's an arse - he seems quite concerned and a lot of his behaviour seems to be basically whistling in the dark.
Also seems that this kind of humour is normal for their relationship. He's trying to distract her.

(That said - for the pat-a-cake I'd have punched him...)

Don't be so easily influenced, the programme is not how it happened, just how they chose to edit it. Channel 4 are bad for this, first noticed it in that rich/poor prog. Families in identical circumstances, either manipulated/edited to appear worthy/aspirational, feckless/irresponsible, it's so fucking blatant when you look for it.
