Haven´t watched much TV over the last few years. Have just caught up with Desperate Housewives, ER is over. Looking for some ideas. What other US series would I like?

I like nip/tuck. it is relatively inexpensive too. Some of the box sets are about 25£ for one series, but I think I got stuck into nip/tuck because no series was more than £15. Series 5 might be £17 but it has extra episodes.

I loved the OC too even though it was aimed at teenagers I think. Seth cohen's parents and Melissa cooper's parents were my age -ish. I think. Good show. Watched all four series.

ValiumSandwich · 20/02/2011 16:39

ps, HOUSE is brilliant. Have watched them all except for series 7.

dalek · 20/02/2011 16:42

Dexter

cakeywakey · 20/02/2011 16:47

Mad Men is fab. We buy 2nd hand box sets from CEX so they're much cheaper.

TheCowardlyLion · 20/02/2011 16:47

House
The Mentalist
Bones
My guilty viewing pleasure: Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries...

ValiumSandwich · 20/02/2011 16:47

can you link to website please cakey?

TheCowardlyLion · 20/02/2011 16:48

Oh, yes to Mad Men.

Join LoveFilm and rent through there - that way you can get the first DVD of the box set and decide whether it's your thing or not.

cakeywakey · 20/02/2011 16:48

Here you go uk.webuy.com/ You can flog them back to them afterwards as well Grin

TysonNobdie86 · 20/02/2011 16:48

nymphadora · 20/02/2011 16:51

TysonNobdie86 · 20/02/2011 16:56

RoobyMurray · 20/02/2011 17:01

Deadwood
Breaking Bad

cakeywakey · 20/02/2011 17:05

Deadwood is a bit of an aquired taste - not for people who don't like copious use of the word 'cunt'. Cracking series though Grin

cornishpasty · 20/02/2011 17:36

Another fan of Nip/Tuck here. You can get them for £10 a series on play.com.

chopchopbusybusy · 20/02/2011 17:40

I've just got brothers and sisters. I've seen most of them but DD2 has just finished desperate housewives, so I got it so that we could watch it together.

isw · 20/02/2011 18:57

Wow excellent, thanks for the fast replies. I live abroad as am hoping to find them online. Keep them coming!

Carnivale!!

It is EXCELLENT - about a weird bunch of circus carnies in the 1930s dustbowl in America, sheltering a telepathic, figure who is on a destiny-led quest to meet up with a priest who is evil to the core and can induce visions in his flock. The priest starts a church of the airways that also influeces vulnerable types to do evil and his bidding. The carnies are all sorts of freaks, and sideshows, dancing girls, bearded women, lizard men etc led by a dwarf who himself is led by the shadowy and telepathic 'management' who never leaves a dark caravan and the viewer never sees (at least not through series 1 or half way through series 2!).

the style of the thing is ace and completely authentic feeling, poor weirdos turn up all the time, and there is even greek tragedy type figures, a crone who can predict the future in one story, people seeing their fate etc).

There was a campaign within channel 4 for the station to buy it because it really suits the british sense of dark mystery, but they eventually declined.

It is HBO and that should say everything about quality and production, but I think it is a leap above even the high standards of HBO - its is american gothic mixed with spookiness and genuinely unsettling characters..

Just awesome..

Heroine · 20/02/2011 19:08

ooh and yay Deadwood it is just terrific - there is a sense always in the background of a town growing from corrupt and dangerous camp to corrupt and scheming town and regional centre.. and the dialogue is absolutely excellent - you have to get into it, its true, but I found myself pausing and re-watching some of the most fabulous speeches and rants by the top characters - I lOVE the doctor in it, he is fabulous...

Aonach · 20/02/2011 19:14

Dexter
24
Six feet under ( really enjoyed)
The vampire diaries
Band of brothers (reluctantly watched but found it to be excellent)- if you enjoy this then Pacific is also good
Sex and the city

CaveMum · 20/02/2011 19:21

Can't believe that no one has mentioned The West Wing yet! Possibly the BEST series to have come out of the US!

Definitely another vote for House as well.

Comedy wise you can't go far wrong with Scrubs (not the last season, it was pretty pants), The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother.

llareggub · 20/02/2011 19:25

I second The West Wing,it is without a doubt the best series ever.

I'm really enjoying Boardwalk Empire on Sky Atlantic. I enjoyed Lost but I'm not sure I could recommend it to anyone else as the ending was so disappointing.

MCos · 20/02/2011 19:40

The Wire! My favorite TV series ever.

CaveMum · 20/02/2011 19:43

Oh yes, and if you missed it first time round - Buffy The Vampire Slayer Grin

ValiumSandwich · 20/02/2011 20:23

I'd heard West Wing is very good, but what if you don't know much about American politics? do you still get the jokes?

ValiumSandwich · 20/02/2011 20:24

Heroine, I'll look at that on amazon. I loved six foot under. That was HBO.
