Hi every one.
Im in the middle of visits right now but thought i should just put a word in.
I hear exactly what your saying about my feelings towards the partner of Amelia.
Due to such as short transmission much of the labour was missed. Both Amelia and her mum where very upset about her partner not attendiing. They told me that he had been out drinking and that he was at home with his phone turned off, even though he knew Amelia was going into labour and would be attendiing the hospital.
I have helped birth near on 500 babies and i recognise the importance of having the father/partner attending both for the mums sake and for the initial bonding with baby. It is for this reason i felt little sympathy for him but continued to persist phoning him so he would not miss one of the most amazing events in his life.
I also feel that it is important to have a little humour whilst going through labour. I find it breaks barriers down and helps the mums to relax. The comment i made about 'being fun 9 months ago' is not some thing i say all the time but similar comments tend to get a laugh from the mum and partner which, in my opinion can only be a good thing as laughing helps make happy hormones.
Thank you for the comments.
Chris

Midhusband - what does your wide think of all this attention you're getting on Mumsnet? :)
We're going to start your fan club you know!

edwardsbella · 02/02/2011 16:09

tigerbear how do you know if wife is wide Grin

taffetasplat · 02/02/2011 16:11

Chris, I didn't realise that Amelia's partner knew she was in labour. How awful.

FWIW, from what I've seen, you're a credit to the profession.

tigerbear · 02/02/2011 16:34

Oops! Grin I'm sure your wife isn't wide!

5inthebed · 02/02/2011 17:35

Yes, wishful thinking SadGrin

bathbuns · 02/02/2011 22:49

Great episode.
Why do they never show the afterbirth though (and is it painful in the way that the childbirth is? Not had children).

When Lucy first came on I thought it was adorable but she did get so annoying. Even her partner seemed to think so. But I'm sure in small doses she's really lovely.

I loved Amelia too. But, ouch! labour looks sore (well, duh!)

BorisTheBold · 02/02/2011 23:45

OOooh Hi Chris,

You booked me onto Burley on 12 Nov and gave me a lecture chat about the importance of breastfeeding Grin.

Thought you did a great job on this weeks OBEM, but have to say that all the mw and docs and other staff at the PA have been pretty much fab for all three of my girls (one back to back, one shoulder dystocia and the last one who couldn't make her mid up about staying head down or being breech!).

Looking forward to next week's episode now to see if I can see myself (or hear myself snoring when I was sleeping off dd3's delivery...).

TwoIfBySea · 03/02/2011 01:03

I loved Amelia and her mum, the way she handled that baby and held back her anger at the idiot dad. Fantastic woman!

Amelia has hopefully realised she and her mum can raise little Russell just fine with or without the boyfriend. I was in tears when the baby popped out and lay cradled on her feet.

As for the singing, ringing twee - ok I get she was scared but she was playing for camera. I think the whole "do you know who I've met" thing was to try and raise her esteem amongst the doctors. Let them know who they were dealing with. Maybe the hubbie-dearie-poo was nervous also and that is why he seemed a bit off, lets face it he has to be used to her performing like that.

Dumbledoresgirl · 03/02/2011 10:29

Bathbuns - the delivery of the afterbirth does not hurt - no-one is keeping some horrid secret from you there!

That said, I have a history of not delivering my afterbirth, even with the injection they give you to speed it along, so, in my last labour, the MW gently pulled on the cord to encourage the placenta to come out, and that was a bit stingy in the stomach Sad

bathbuns · 03/02/2011 12:15

Thanks Dumbledore Smile

Northernlurker · 03/02/2011 18:20

Yes the afterbirth bit is imo really quite nice as it doesn't hurt, is sort of interesting and gives you a pleasing sense of achievement Grin After the birth though you can get some pains in your tummy which tend to get worse with each delivery as the uterus has to work a bit harder to contract each time. If you're breastfeeding you usually notice these pains when you start to feed - but that's a great sign that everything is getting back to where it should be. This lasts a few days and should be perfectly manageable on a little paracetamol. I don't remember the afterpains at all with dd1, a bit with dd2 and was a bit sore with dd3. Respect to women who have 6!

ThatllDoPig · 03/02/2011 18:44

Claim to fame alert . . .
The daddy of Amelia's baby is working in a builder team down the road from me!
Desperate to ask him how baby Russell is, and how he felt when he saw the programme and how amazing Amelia was.
Do you think I should?
midhusband echo others that you were fab. Just the right blend of gentleness and strength. Well done you!

I had horrible time at the PA and glad to see it in a more positive light than I experienced.

Northernlurker · 03/02/2011 18:48

NO don't say anything. Sadly chances are they're not together and if he doesn't appreciate Amelia by now you saying anything won't make any odds!

ThatllDoPig · 03/02/2011 18:52

No, I know really, too shy anyway.

MoldyWarp · 03/02/2011 21:41

i've had six and the afterbirth does hurt! Not much but i grab the gas and air pretty sharpish when they start yanking on the umbilical Wink

ThatllDoPig · 04/02/2011 09:44

Yes, I thought it hurt too. Not as much as having the actual baby, but I couldn't beleive I had to do MORE pushing! I though the MW was joking the first time!
