Mad Men - amazing stuff

It doesn't make you laugh, but it is getting more subtle and complex by the minute.
I loved the way Peggy looked at Pete through the glass as she went off with her hip friends regret, hope closure, and the way Peggy refused to admit she had ever been in Alison's shoes (although she had), and the way Don bumps into the elderly married couple bickering about pears.
I love the way it is Alison who is the first to make Don face up to his problems with women. He thinks of himself as kind and caring and respectful. I love the Ponds - all women want to get married --- stuff.
Each episode is like a mini-play.

Am in tears. That was best episode yet. Relationship between Peggy and Don is so beautifully played. Almost hoped they wld kiss but so glad they didn't. That they now have a common bond and friendship is so much more realistic. Am looking forward to seeing how this will play out. Hope Peggy finds true love with someone worthy of her.
Also - watched this on my birthday so felt kind of kinship with Peggy all way thru!

southeastastra · 22/10/2010 08:23

brilliant episode again!

just a quick q, how did don get to marry his first wife? (i know she was married to 'don' before meeting the other one but can't remember why they got wed)

i had lump in my throat watching him breakdown with peg :(

theyoungvisiter · 22/10/2010 08:27

What a great episode!

SEA - not sure what you mean - Don was never married to Ann, but because the dead-Don was, he still had to divorce her, and he gave her money because he had cheated her out of a widow's pension.

Their love was just platonic - that's Don's tragedy isn't it, that he can't love a woman he finds sexually attractive. Peggy and Anna are the only women he really likes and respects, and he could never marry either of them.

southeastastra · 22/10/2010 09:15

ah thanks youngvisitor that clears it up!

LongtimeinBrussels · 22/10/2010 09:31

I LOVE Mad Men but as I don't get it on tv here, I have to admit to doing what Ghoulysses does. I've seen the whole series now and am soooo disappointed it's over :( . Great series!

notyummy · 22/10/2010 09:34

Loved this weeks episode. Nearly in tears when watched it on sky plus last night. Some fabulous acting - particularly from John Hamm. Very unattractive - and realistic - vom on the shirt. Yuck!

Fannyanny · 22/10/2010 09:39

You are spot on youngvisitor about Don. Maybe Ponds lady will b The One to help him break that rule?? He's obvs attracted to her, yet she is also gaining his respect as time goes on.

thegirlwiththemouseyhair · 22/10/2010 09:44

That was a fabulous episode.
Dp who was actually crying - bless!
(I love it when he cries at things - I taunt him mercilessly in public about it for ages Grin)
But I suppose if Don Draper can cry....

Beautifully played.

swanriver · 22/10/2010 11:42

I thought all the confusing farcial bits (the Tampax account fgs! the drunken person trying to defecate on the wrong chair Roger trying to get away from the AA lot -Mark being constantly given the phone by the obsequious snooty waiter, the short new apprentice copywriter who got the job because of Don's mistake)were just a brilliant backdrop for the clarity of the moment where Don breaks down. And the vomit and Peggy's bad hair - no more pretence or posturing.
And the Samsonite - code for Don's unbreakable heart, it takes some knocks but he is unbreakable. But Peggy is even stronger than he - he after all still has his children.

It was excellent. And the way it is shot; stark, colourful and beautiful.

I've missed a whole lot to do with Peggy, does she have a child?

swanriver · 22/10/2010 13:26

Peggy had a baby which she had adopted two years ago(?) She had a brief fling with Pete in office when he was first married and didn't even know she was pregnant till giving birth! Pete and whatever she is called(after years trying)are now expecting a child. Pete knows she had baby adopted after event, Don visited when the baby was first adopted. No-one else knows except Peggy's family.

MarshaBrady · 22/10/2010 18:10

Ah I see thanks Swanriver. Thought it was something to do with Pete as there were many meaningful looks at the elevator...

TheFoosa · 22/10/2010 18:27

I think Peggy's sister is bringing up the baby as her own child

theyoungvisiter · 22/10/2010 18:52

Foosa no - i think that was discussed on another thread and the conclusion was that the sister's baby is not Peggy's. I think Peggy's really was adopted.

Marsha - that was what the conversation at the bar was about when Peggy said "My family think you're responsible because you were the only person to visit me in hospital" - she meant that they think he is the father of her child.

Except WE know it's brill-creme Pete. Who, let's face it, has his own bucketload of ishoos.

theyoungvisiter · 22/10/2010 18:53

yes, quick google reveals from the horse's mouth (Matthew Weiner himself" Peggy's baby is not living with her sister

MarshaBrady · 22/10/2010 18:55

I've missed a bit unfortunately.

I even love Pete. His character, client guy, is perfect. Always ready to do anything.

lucyspangle · 22/10/2010 19:39

Agree this was best episode of the season.

Matsikula · 22/10/2010 20:09

Marsha, other crucial thing to know about Pete (I think) is that he's a bit of a date rapist. There was a thing with a German Au Pair while Trudy was away from the city during the summer.

Does anyone else ever wish we'd get another glimpse of Sal?

MarshaBrady · 22/10/2010 21:40

Ah that's a shame. I liked his vulnerability and ambition. But that seems a bit much.

Sal, was that the director who got fired?

Nuttybear · 22/10/2010 22:46

What a fab episode I don't think a platonic relationship happens like that in real life. (or maybe that's just my experience) But I do love it. I think its more the Madonna v. whore thing. Some men keep in their mind eye a camp of two types of women. OR is it a reflection of the way they thought of women in the 50' & 60's.
I hope they have a crashing professional row or she catches him with another woman or he chases and catches the doctor. In these 'will they won't they' things, as soon as they do we get bored.
I loved that Duck as a grown up sort of love for her.
I love Peggy.
Yep! I want Sal to come back for a bit. I liked him. I also really like the new big blonde bloke that she had to work with and the cool dark haired 60's lad.
By the way what Season is this one as I can't find their names?

Nancy66 · 23/10/2010 14:19

Was a great episode, really dark.

almost a two hander with Don and Peggy. Excellent acting.

Nuttybear · 30/10/2010 17:54

This week was just a builder, I think for future story lines. I did love that Peggy sacked that little shit. It was a punch the sky moment for me. I really liked that Joan wasn't grateful to Peggy but that's really what happens in real life. They have never been best friends and Joan is a little jealous of Peggy' position in the company. Didn't Joan's husband force himself (raped) Joan when they got together. He seems so nice now. have I got that story line wrong?
Will I can't wait for next week

southeastastra · 30/10/2010 17:59

i saw a mad men calendar today :S

Nuttybear · 30/10/2010 18:01

Not sure If I dare buy it Oh! I can have it at work as I've now got an office job!

Nuttybear · 30/10/2010 18:02

Where did you see the calendar i forgot to ask?[hblush]
