My 17-year-old had a car accident - he’s okay, but I’m shaken [Title edit by MNHQ]

My 17 year had crashed his car. "Mam I've had a big crash, the car is on its side and i can't get out im trapped". He's fine, shock up and devastated he's written his car off. He was going through lanes ( told him never to go through lanes) and a van came around a blind bend, he swerved to dry to avoid him, went up the banking and flipped into the van. He's been driving for 6 months and all fairness hes a careful driver. He wasn't speeding as his black box didn't show it. Im so gutted for him. Everyone is saying this will be a big lesson for him. Anyone's teenager had a accident and learnt from it? I was really nervous when he first past, but I got over that. I dont want to be over the top in the future 😫

he is alive so you didn’t have the most dreaded phone call you could have.

trigger warn your title for people who have lost kids ffs

Ponderingwindow · 30/05/2026 15:37

I hate this thread title. This is not the most dreaded call. It’s close, but not the worst.

my teen dd had a car accident recently. Much more minor. Yes, it helped her be more cautious.

Yep.

Choccyp1g · 30/05/2026 15:37

He rang his Mum, before 999 ?

That's the kind of thing my DS would do. Bless him, hope you are all recovering.

Inwhitelights · 30/05/2026 15:37

Agree that isn’t actually the most dreaded phone call any parent can have. I’d suggest you rephrase the title.

tinaabbot · 30/05/2026 15:38

That is so scary, thank goodness he is ok. My dad just passed her test so I know how scary a time it is. Is he going to be able to replace the car straight away?

Bristolandlazy · 30/05/2026 15:38

No you certainly didn't have the worst call any parent could get by far.

You're rather over dramatic. You told him not to drive there and he didn't listen, he's a new driver and he thinks he knows better. He's learning consequences.

TheChosenTwo · 30/05/2026 15:38

Jesus it’s a horrible phone call for sure and I can’t imagine how panicked you must have felt hearing from him when he was trapped in the car.
But it’s not the worst phone call you can receive.

LimbOnTheTreeTheTreeInTheHoleTheHoleInTheGround · 30/05/2026 15:39

Two of my children have died.

You haven't had the most dreaded call on any level.

I'm glad he's OK.

SandwichSuperstar · 30/05/2026 15:40

He's been driving for 6 months and all fairness hes a careful driver. He wasn't speeding as his black box didn't show it. Im so gutted for him. Everyone is saying this will be a big lesson for him.

But he didn't do anything wrong so what 'big lesson' are they talking about?

TeaAndTrumpet · 30/05/2026 15:41

Yes, quite an insensitive title. Can’t you see what the actual worst phone call would have been, given you came close? It’s bad, but absolutely not the same.

SnappyQuoter · 30/05/2026 15:41

You absolutely did not receive the worst phone call a parent can receive. That is a totally inappropriate thing to say.

Your kid was driving on the wrong side of the road, and an innocent driver would have been terrified when he came round a blind been to see your kid driving towards him. Then your son crashed into him. He is not a good driver. He is incredibly lucky he didn’t kill someone else, nevermind himself.

Do not help him buy another car. And start talking to him about how dangerous what he did was instead of your histrionics about how terrible the phone call was. He is fine. He is alive. So you can deal with his terrible driving and attitude to other road users.

My kid was hit by a driver like your son. I had a hell of a worse phone call than you did.

Ohcrap082024 · 30/05/2026 15:41

I agree with those who have suggested that your thread title needs rephrasing.

Everyone will be relieved that your DS is ok. But, with kindness, surely you know that there are parents on this forum who have had phone calls and news that is truly heartbreaking.

Boreded · 30/05/2026 15:41

I’m actually so angry at this and I haven’t even lost a child…you realise that more than 20% of males under 20 crash within their 1st year…it’s practically routine at that point. Fewer people than that will catch a cold in a given year (15-20%)

andnowwhatdowedo · 30/05/2026 15:42

That's a long way from being the worst phone call you could get. You heard your son's voice and knew he was alive and conscious. Hopefully he will learn from this and be a more careful driver in future.

He was driving on the wrong side of the road. He went round a bend, and instead of actually making the turn and staying on his side of the road, he cut the corner by crossing into the other lane so was on the wrong side of the road when a van came around the bend. He could have killed someone because he wanted to cut the corner.

MeltyMomenrs · 30/05/2026 15:42

I'm sorry you've both had such a fright, but please ask MN to change your thread title, it's a long way off 'the worst phone call' & you've had a week, so you can't blame shock for it.

did he have a dash cam?

He overtook on the wrong side of the road near a bend. He definitely did something wrong

ShhhhhItsASurprise · 30/05/2026 15:43

So sorry for all the losses. Have also lost close friends and family in car accidents. :(

OP, there’s nothing wrong with driving in lanes. I wouldn’t have been able to go anywhere when I passed my test had that been the rule.

Your son’s immaturity around driving is evident. What time of day did it happen?

MeltyMomenrs · 30/05/2026 15:48

I'm very sorry to hear you had worse news about your own son ❤️

but you don't know if her son was on the wrong side of the road or not.

Have I missed something? Where did OP say that he was on the wrong side of the road?

He may have been; but then the van driver could also have been - or it could have been a single-track road.

SlightlyAjar · 30/05/2026 15:50

Id really suggest you ask MNHQ to edit your title to something less insensitive.

It is in the original post. Going over lanes, van comes round a bend and he flips his car.
