Is anyone else’s child doing this ? I had always thought this was a sort of charity thing and was to encourage kids who wouldn’t have much oppertunity to be outside or do sports and activities. Turns out the cost makes it the opposite. It’s cost £100s for camping fees, registration and equipment. Also the sports element needs to be something that can be measured so there’s a cost for sports clubs. In my daughters school all the kids (as far as I can tell) are the ones who are already sporty or do other activities out of school. It’s a real shame as I thought it would be helping those who can’t afford these experiences usually.

Gold DofE does autumn and winter ceremonies at St James's, and spring and summer ceremonies at Buckingham Palace. (Because nobody wants to be out on a lawn in November!)

Yes, it was November, and trying to snow. I could have done with thicker denier tights.

Queen's / King's Scout Award Holders are invited to a parade at Windsor Castle, not Buckingham Palace. If they were invited to Buckingham Palace, then they achieved their DofE Gold.

I think it depends. My gold DofE was at St James' Palace.

Yes, so was mine, but I was replying to the pp who said King's Scout Award Holders were invited to the palace, and pointing out they weren't invited for the KSA, they would have been invite for DofE Gold.

KSA holders are invited to Windsor Castle for that award. Smile

Gold DofE holders were also invited to be volunteer helpers at Buckingham Palace events. I dont know anyone who took it up. Gold DofE holders are usually working by the time the invite comes through.

At least some of the assessors are volunteers - I guess the outsourced ones pay their assessors though.

Both of ours did the bronze and gold (this is the way their school does it). Apart from a very small registration fee, the expeditions cost us next to nothing as the school lent all of the camping equipment, even hiking boots and waterproofs if needed, although most parents were happy to provide this.

It’s a shame NCS has stopped. Our youngest did it and absolutely loved it.

He could (he does some of these sometimes anyway) but thought it had to be an hour a week? Might ask them. He’s thinking of volunteering at junior parkrun but it’s further away and would mean he never gets a lie in!

I think you can be a bit ish about it and include the getting there and the admin involved before and after. Running in the actual event could be seen as pack running and supporting others too. Sharing social media posts to get enough volunteers etc - all adds up

One of mine did music lessons for their skill which were only half an hour but they allowed her to claim an hour due to practice through the week etc
