Dd14 has asked for perfume - I don’t have a clue!

Upcoming birthday and she’d like a nice perfume. I am not a perfume person so don’t know what’s what - she doesn’t really either! Just Miss Dior which we have established is too expensive, and she already has sol de janeiro yellow.

Anyone happy to share what’s popular with their teen or can recommend anything mid range (£30ish) that’s not too overpowering / cloying?

My DD, 16, has asked for perfume last two Christmas lists. She likes Jimmy Choo, Blossom. Normally pick some up in Superdrug but good offer on in Boots ATM. In case helpful.

AuntieMarys · 03/11/2024 08:01

Zara does nice perfume

PortiasBiscuit · 03/11/2024 08:02

Ask her best friend what she advises?

TheLongRider · 03/11/2024 08:02

More Sol de Janeiro! Possibly Arianna Grande Cloud or Mod Vanilla. Billie Eilish is quite nice too. Kayali perfumes are lovely and you can get small bottles in Boots or Sephora. You might be able to find a sample set or miniatures of other scents at your price point.

Sparxdislike · 03/11/2024 08:03

My teen wants the purple all de janeiro this year (59) I think. Or the daisy perfume. Hth

AquaFurball · 03/11/2024 08:04

Ariana Grande Cloud, Vera Wang Princess, Jimmy Choo Blossom. More fun, young perfumes anything Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera or Katy Perry.

Loads on offer on Amazon atm. Just bought the first 3 for two 15 year olds and a 17 year old.

Gingernaut · 03/11/2024 08:04

Britney Spears' Fantasy range is nice

Ineffable23 · 03/11/2024 08:05

At risk of creating work, don't you need to go and smell them?

They smell different on different people's skin so I tend to think you need to smell them before you can buy them.

They're not any kind of designer but I love the Fragonard perfumes at M and S. I think they just smell gorgeous.

Lolopolo · 03/11/2024 08:18

Ariana Grande Cloud would be perfect. It’s a cute scent and the bottle is fun.

Loads of suggestions- thank you!

I will go and smell but some suggestions as to what to smell has been very helpful!

My DD likes the perfumes they have in Lush, there's something for everyone in there.

She also likes Sol de Janeiro and Victorias Secret.

MonaChopsis · 03/11/2024 08:36

In this situation earlier this year, DD14 and I had a day out where she tried some of the perfumes on... Ended up liking one from Zara which I never would have picked for her! I think they need to choose their own, it's a really personal decision... Maybe make an afternoon of it, take her out for coffee & cake etc?

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 03/11/2024 08:37

My daughter likes Billie Elish, Ariana Grande and has just asked for the Kylie Jenner one for her birthday.

EvelynBeatrice · 03/11/2024 08:46

Keep an eye on TK Maxx website for offers on some of the current teen favourites higher end ones - e.g. Daisy by Mark Jacobs, Light Blue by Dolce & Gabbana etc.
In addition to the Ariana Grande ones suggested above, the Ghost perfumes sold at Superdrug are also popular and inexpensive.
If she is a budding parfumista and more interested in liking the smell herself than smelling like everyone else, the older teen classics like Anais Anais l’ originale or Cerriti 1881 are often to be found cheaply and are more complex, less teeth clenching sweet and less commonplace than the current youth smells.

Slhe might also like Elizabeth Arden’ s White tea range.

Singleandproud · 03/11/2024 08:49

Surely part of the fun jn buying perfume is to go in and squirt it?
Take her with you for a trip to Boots and have a go and ask her to find three she likes, then closer to her birthday by one of the three.

Perfume is SO personal.

I would visit a large departmetnt store together and have a facial.
Try tester strips of many perfumes and have daughter choose her favourite few - from which you can choose one for Christmas.

pinkpjamas1 · 03/11/2024 08:55

I bought Pink Sugar for a teen recently and it was very well received.

listsandbudgets · 03/11/2024 08:56

Trying to decide whether I'm just young at hard or trying to hard... I'm in my late 40s - Anais Anais and Daisy are 2 of my favourites. I had no idea they was aimed at teens although to be fair I got my first bottle of Anais Anais when I was 15 and loved it ever since Grin

There are some great suggestions above but as a PP said perfume is so personal. I'd be taking her to a big branch of boots or a huge department storew where she can try out lots of testers. It settles differently on different people so a perfume that smells beautiful on her best friend might smell utterly appalling on her.

We all wanted Exclamation by Coty when I was your DDs age - someone gave me a bottle for my birthday one year and I felt like a million dollars

Grepes · 03/11/2024 08:58

What about a selection of different ones? Most places do these and that way she can try selection.

Youranus · 03/11/2024 09:06

John Lewis and various other outlets do a roll on Miss Dior perfume. Currently on offer for £36. Sephora have the rose version and free delivery over £25.

because of this I would get a collection from somewhere like Next or Zara. Then when she is older and knows what she likes, you can buy a specific perfume.

listsandbudgets · 03/11/2024 09:30

@Youranus DD has to roll on Miss Dior. It lasts for ages and is easily her favourite.

RobinEllacotStrike · 03/11/2024 10:18

Any thing by a pop singer. My 3 teens are asking for Billie Eilish Gold.

Sol de janiro have other scents.
Dd 13 asks for Victoria Secret body sprays 🙄

StamppotAndGravy · 03/11/2024 10:29

Best to take her into a large store and let her try everything on.
