My teen wants to go to his concert; this looks horrifying to me, am I just out of touch?

Is this acceptable pop music videos, and I'm just over-protective, and out of touch with the current music culture 'norm'?

is the new teaser video. Is this, absolutely fine, and safe, for 14yo - 16yo, to go with peers, to see the concert of this new album?

He’s massively popular - my 14 year old has asked to go - but will go with her dad as IMO she’s too young to go just with similar age mates. Pretty sure under 16s have to go with over 18s for this anyway.

leia24 · 01/11/2024 05:46

IME almost all venues in Manchester and Liverpool allow over 14s unaccompanied, from the small o2 and student unions to the big arenas. I'd let mine go but the deal is I usually drive and drop them outside then wait a few metres down the road and walk back to the car with them afterwards

You shouldn't let him go he is very demonic his concerts are dangerous my 16 year old girl was trampled on by mindless imbeciles. The music he does has been anaylised and has demonic meaning. Trust me dont let your child suffer.

Have we gone back to 1985? I've got a good Ozzy Osbourne record I could recommend you.

One of mine is a massive heavy metal / punk fan, the crowds are the friendliest of any concerts I’ve been to. They are kind considerate, look out for the young ones and supportive.

Growlybear83 · 01/11/2024 10:00

@BourbonsAreOverated I agree with you. I never had a problem at all back when I was a very young teen, and people are really kind and respectful to me now I'm a retired old buddy when I go to heavy metal concerts now.

wandawaves · 01/11/2024 10:12

What is wrong with the song you posted? Have you actually googled the lyrics?

Anyway, Tyler is very popular. If your teen wants to go, i would let them. One of my kids went to his concert once, all was good.

I just would say no at that age to the mosh. Seats only. One of my (petite) kids was at a rap concert the other week in the mosh and they said the crowd felt like concrete walls closing in on them, and they had trouble breathing and had to be dragged out by a friend.

MermaidEyes · 01/11/2024 10:16

@Growlybear83 @BourbonsAreOverated agreed. I've been going to rock and metal bars and clubs for 30 odd years and there's never any trouble. Head into some Zanzibar type nightclub and there's a fight kicking off within 10 minutes. I thought we were well beyond accusing musical artists of sending our kids over to the dark side and satan 🙄

ItGhoul · 01/11/2024 10:37

Looks fine to me. It's just a music video and your son is 14, not 5. It'll be fine. When I was his age I was going to watch bands whose music had much, much darker themes than that, believe me. I watched Alice Cooper subjected to a simulated guillotining, and a Nick Cave gig that was basically entirely songs about murders.

You will need to check the age restriction for the venue though, as some venues will have a no under-16s policy (regardless of what acts are performing).

Don't be daft.

WonderingWanda · 01/11/2024 10:44

My 15 yo was listening to his new album yesterday. Dh took our son to a Travis Scott concert, it was in the seated area and was all perfectly safe but no way would he be going alone with friends.

Are we still doing this? My aunt was spouting this nonsense about Metallica in the 90s.

BobbyBiscuits · 01/11/2024 12:27

Going to see your favourite bands and artists is a really good way to get kids into going 'out' in a safe way. I didn't listen to the track but if there's plenty of swearing or talking about hardships of the ghetto/'roads' etc, then it doesn't mean your kid is going to 'catch' poverty.
If he's with a group of friends and he's got his phone then let him go.

What is it like safety wise at these big venues? In terms of other people - I’m imagining loads of gangster types taking drugs, fighting and sexually harassing young girls. But I’ve never been to a big concert and hadn’t heard of this person till today.

Big venues are full of teens and parents chaperoning.

No drugs, no fighting, no gang shit or their licence will be up for review. Safety is even bigger now after Manchester/Brixton.

Probably the safest and most sanitised place to go "out" possible.

Many years ago ''Johnny Rotten'' was shocking to parents.

Now he is part of the Establishment, very staid.

Then Snoop Dogg.

''Parental advisory'' but Snoop Dogg is also mainstream now.

@TwinklyTaupePanda There will probably be security there, I understand why you are worried, but forbidding a gig will make it all the more desirable.

If his friends are sensible, I'd consider it.

The fact that Snoop Dogg, murderer (who got off), misogynist, misogynoirist, pimp, pornographer, gang affiliated, serial cheat and baby father only started voting since the last election.....the fact that he is mainstream is not indicative of anything aside from the fact that he is charming to those he needs to be and still makes money for the right people.
Rap is generally degenerate, full of self loathing men who hate Black women, hate Blackness yet demand outside respect for Black MEN. Most are overtly sexually.deviant, make no secret of it, drug addicted, have sexually infringed themselves upon women and men and a fair few are stone cold murderers.
Slavery was once mainstream, too as was marital rape.
It's no coincidence that Rap is the elevator music of the anywhere one looks shittiest, hopeless for too many and different people, circling the drain times since the 1950s.
And has coincided with Black rights becoming about White validation instead of our evolution and integrity.
Of course it's mainstream! If it was about anything constructive, it wouldn't be!

HawaiiWake · 03/11/2024 20:27

Take your kid since venue wants under a certain age to be accompanied by an older person, not young peers. Pay for seats and not standing sections. Enjoy it is rap, hip hop with jazz. Check out the album on Spotify.

I'ma write this for everyone that doesn't know much about mr. Tyler. Tyler the creator is a worldwide superstar famous for music and his production and funny nature. He produces all of his music and directs all of his music videos. He's not a 'gangster rapper' and raps about life accomplishment, story's, love interest and more. (Note) He does curse in about all his songs. Regarding all of the old tweets and song he has created with 'demonic nature' he has completed changed his life around since being a teen rapping about stuff like that. If you go on Ticketmaster and search his name you can see people's reviews on Tyler and they are all positive. If your thinking about taking your kids to see him, please consider it, it will be once in a lifetime experience

My teen wants to go to his concert; this looks horrifying to me, am I just out of touch?

They play him on Radcliff and Maconie, on radio 6.
As far as ds is concerned, r6 is for old people. Poor teenagers; can't have anything for themselves anymore.

This is Tyler the Creator and he is hugely popular among teens. This whole genre is massive tbh and there are a lot of problematic language and themes, but I take the view that every generation has its subculture of music that feels wrong to the generation before. In my day is was rave and music that heavily promoted drug use. Enjoying it didn't turn me into a permanent pill head.

My son has asked for tickets for his 16th birthday and I will be getting them. I stay curious about the music he likes and try to have discussions around the themes. I think they listen for the beats rather than the words and the energy at gigs. There can be a LOT of moshing but my son who has been to a few gigs knows his limits with that.

It's valid to say no, it's an individual choice but music and gig-going was a huge part of my teenage life so I am more inclined to support this, and my son is vaguely interested in a music-related career.

A very well thought through answer!

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Parents are supposed to dislike their teenagers music, and teenagers are supposed to rebel by liking music that shocks their parents.

Honestly though, Tyler the creator is pretty good, and like everyone has said, not a tiny bit worse than the music of the early 2000s, 90s or earlier.

I managed to get tickets for me and DS16 to see Kendrick Lamar and SZA today. I’m really super excited to spend the day with him sharing he enjoys.

This although I watched so much Kerrang as a teenager that even my parents started to like the music! I remember my dad particularly liking Slipknot "Wait and Bleed" 😂😂.

Some of my best memories were going to gigs as a teenager but my parents were always very laid back about it and actively encouraged it as some of their best memories included seeing gigs that their parents didn't approve of. They even let me go to a 2 day music festival Metallica were headlining during my study leave for my Higher exams. I'm so grateful for the memories and no harm done to my exam results.
