Have you managed to coax your teenaged boy into sandals....or am I as ludicrous as he thinks I am?

DS 15, is going to be spending a month in a hot climate doing a lot of travelling and walking. I suggested he get some decent sandals to alternate with his trainers and I've been laughed out of the house.

Even his Df ridiculed my suggestion. Teen DD and I are Birkenstock fans forever but I said any sandals. I wasn't trying to force him into Birkenstocks.

Is it just that sandals are uncool? DS will know no one but family where we are going, is not the most sociable anyway (so won't be looking to meet new people) so what is the problem and could it be that he just hasn't come across the right pair???

I can't remember when I last saw a teenage boy wearing sandals. Just leave him to do what he wants. There is nothing worse than parents nagging their teens about clothes.

He knows it's going to be hot, if he bakes then that's his choice and he has sliders and crocs anyway!

TrudyMonk · 05/04/2024 08:13

I'm totally converted to sticking with trainers in hot weather. Sandals come with a whole world of problems.
We all have for lounging and trainers for walking except DD 24 who wears crocs and socks but we still love her 😁

daffodilandtulip · 05/04/2024 08:16

Sliders and crocs ... but not if they are specifically walking, he'd still wear trainers.

Mine has Yeezy sliders. Sliders seem to be more popular with teen boys than sandals

My son has these too, along with some havianas flip flops and some crocs. He would not wear sandals.

JeysusH · 05/04/2024 08:22

I'm really surprised by these answers, I didn't realise teens were so against sandals. Mine are pretty cool and have always been happy to wear them. Teen DS has. these and these and a pair of Birkenstocks.

Teen DD likes a pair of Tevas or Arizona Loves.

I've even got teen DDs boyfriend to buy a pair for when we take him to Italy.

Send your teens to me, I'll get them in sandals!

Balenciaga slides here. Wouldn't go near sandals. With white socks 🙈.

Confused118 · 05/04/2024 11:33

Nephew - trainers whatever the weather, but does have some funky crocs which he'll wear all day if he's on a resort or pool but never when he's at home?
Niece - Flip flops constantly unless they're impractical then its trainers

I went away with them last year to Turkey and in the town even in the blistering heat most local youngsters were wearing trainers/boots so I think your DS will be fine

wpuleeeeto · 05/04/2024 11:34

I won't even wear sandals for walking, did trainers happily in Florida in summer.

Hoppinggreen · 05/04/2024 11:36

Mine wears Crocs or sketchers sandals on holiday (sans socks) but trainers here even when its hot.
We all have the sketchers ones, they are pretty good for all terrains and can be worn in the water too so good for pebbly beaches . My DS looks to his older sister for fashion advice so if she says its ok he will wear most things

YouveGotAFastCar · 05/04/2024 14:12

I’m 34 and have lived in and travelled some really hot places, and have never worn sandals. I hate how they feel on my feet and they are just not for me.

He’ll be fine in trainers.

And they usually rub. Trainers for me, everytime.

Yabu op!

Variedviews · 14/04/2024 23:37

These are horrific 😂

Variedviews · 14/04/2024 23:48

These are the ugliest shoes I’ve ever seen. They must also make the soles of your feet stink.

DrCoconut · 15/04/2024 01:40

My DS is 13 now and not fashion conscious really but he'd hate sandals. He wears trainers or sliders with sport socks 😫

reluctantbrit · 18/04/2024 08:10

DD here but even she will only wear sandals when she dresses up for dinner. Otherwise it's trainers.

Sandals in a hot and humid weather are actually not great at all, they are a guarantee for blisters where the straps rub the skin. If you are active you can easily loose hold in them.

I love my sandals, I actually have a decent pair of walking ones from an outdoor shop but I bought them for the comfortable sole, not to wear all day when going out walking all day on difficult terrain.

Get him a good pair of hiking boots and 2 pair of trainers.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/04/2024 08:11

Ours was happy with crocs and flip flops

What are horrific?

You've just resurrected a two-week dead thread to say...

Presumably the photo of the 'family' sandals. It's not hard to work out.

Isn't it?

JeysusH · 18/04/2024 08:34

That was posted on the 5/4 @BusterGonad.

That's 2 weeks ago.

Why revive?

BusterGonad · 18/04/2024 08:41

Sometimes people put stuff in the search bar, look through threads, read one then forget it's old and comment. It's easily done I think.
