what healthy stuff do your TEENAGERS have when they come home from school......after a full cooked lunch

Any ideas for healthy snacks that are also filling

DS is 12 and seems to have hollow legs atm

He has a huge cooked lunch at school but is sooooo hungry when he has had his sandwich and fruit for tea

So he needs something else but I am stuck for ideas

I know that he would be happy to eat crisps and biscuits etc but I want to have some healthy stuff apart from fruit and bread

I find pitta bread filled with salad and cold meat works well as do fajitas with chicken and peppers.

mine also have home made soup with plenty of crusty wholegrain bread; very filling

croissant with ham and cheese
wrap with turkey and salad
pancakes with yogurt and honey
toast with peanut butter
yogurts
wholemeal bagels/muffins with cream cheese
hummus and veg sticks
porridge
museli bars
pasta or noodle salad

Only one of mine is a teenager and only "just" at that but these are a few of the snacky things they have:

Oatcakes with peanut butter or cheese.

A very simple noodle soup, made with rice noodles, soya beans, stock and soy sauce.

Toasted teacakes.

Nuts and raisins.

Dry cereal.

Dips and crudites - easy stuff like sugar snap peas, babycorn etc.

They also have total freedom of the fruit bowl at all times!

My teens eat:
Dry cereal.
Toast spread with peanut Butter.
Yoghurts.
Cereal Bars.

Oooh, one of DS1's favourite "teeny weeny little snackettes" (© an ancient Sooty video we used to watch all the time ) is a bowl of frozen peas - still frozen of course - that's very healthy.

Another nice one is mixed fruit (frozen is easiest, then you can just defrost a portion) in a bowl with some Greek yogurt. Scrummy.

Kanga, are you saying a sandwich and fruit is all he has for his tea?

If so maybe you should consider making him a proper meal in the evening, even if he has had a cooked lunch at school.

(Or are you saying he has cooked lunch, and then sandwich and fruit after school, and then an evening meal later, but he still has hollows? )

Oh - another good healthy filling thing - a smoothie! Either home made or from innocent.

Mine love 2 minute noodles, steamed dim sims and my sausage rolls which have stacks of grated potato, carrot and zucchini in them - gotta get those vegies into them any way we can!

School dinners aren't very large IME - if my dds had a cooked lunch at school they'd still be ready for another one at 4.30/5 and then supper before bed

For instance, yesterday they had boiled eggs for breakfast, a large roll, 2 pieces of fruit and a penguin for packed lunch, big plate of lasagne, oven chips and salad when they got back from school (4.30ish), then a chocolate muffin and icecream for dd2 after swimming & lemon meringue pie for dd1 at about 8.30.

This is what he had for lunch yeaterday {I have copied from the school website} They are huge.

Roast Pork with Apple Sauce

Herby Diced Potatoes
Leeks
Carrots

Rhubarb Crumble

Cheese & biscuits


Yes all he was having was a sandwich, milk and as much fruit as he liked when he comes home. He is obviously going to have a growth spurt as he is still hungry 

I am getting used to the idea that yes he does want more food - I will show your ideas to DH there are some deffo brill ones Kangaboy will be pleased too

yes but does he just have a sandwich and fruit for tea, as it won't be enough for him most likley - can't he join you and DH for your evening meal as well as his sandwich, or is the sandwich just to "put him on" (as they say here in yorkshire).
My oldest two have a snack in the car on the way home (fruit and something else), cooked dinner around 6/6.30 pm then either join DH and I for more food when we eat at about 8.30pm or then get stuck into the cereal/bread bin. They are as skinny as lats.

Yes that is all he has - I realise now that he is needing more

DH and I don't eat a meal in evening cos DH has his at school too {he teaches at same school that DS is at} and I eat sometime during the day

Will have rejig of ideas about food & meals

I don't think a sandwich is enough for a 12 year old boy in the evening, to be honest, unless it's a huge heap of sandwiches.

12 year old boys require more calories than grown men.

He is quite tall ie 5'5" but he isn't skinny at all hence why I want healthy stuff rather than biscuits and crisps etc.

I had heard the phrase "eat you out of house and home" but I didn't realise it would happen at 12 ~ I was thinking at about 16

But I guess Kangaboy has started this part of growing up @ 12.

How about flapjack? It's very filling and doesn't have to be unhealthy - ditto rice pudding, semolina etc - if you make them with skimmed milk they are quite healthy.

I remember my brother ate like a pig and got porky for 6 monhs before he shot uo 6 inches.
