6th form ball - where to buy a decent suit that doesn't cost the earth?

Where do you wonderful people buy suits for the leavers ball? Looking for something that won't make me bankrupt, for a son that's not too bothered about suits and occasions. He is tall and slim however so it can't be just any regular suit or the length won't fit.

Vinted. Got my son's leavers prom suit from there, worn once by the sellers son for his prom. It's immaculate and cost me £50 all in, when the jacket alone was originally double that.

Echinops · 10/04/2023 21:00

H&M skinny fit suit, was £49.99 for the jacket and £29.99 the trousers. Trousers start at 30in waist but were fine as quite a tight stretchy fit.

Some good suggestions, thank you all.

@OhBeAFineGuyKissMe yes planning to go to uni and will probably wear it again - although he would only wear a suit if he absolutely must.

@Kindledino would you mind sharing what the brand was?

Got ours from Zara Men.

cheapskatemum · 10/04/2023 22:48

Slaters or Next. Actually M&S aren't bad either - DSs had 2 lovely sales assistants running around fetching all the different sizes & styles for them last time we went for black funeral suits.

BeeBB · 10/04/2023 23:06

Our very tall very slim son got a suit off the peg at Slaters. I was very doubtful but he tried a few on and got one that worked they let down the legs and the sleeves and it worked perfectly.

RainBow725 · 10/04/2023 23:19

I second Next. You can buy them as separates to get the right fit and many of them are washable.

NCTDN · 11/04/2023 07:32

Suit direct have branded ones for the same price as next and M&S.

gkd1234 · 11/04/2023 07:33

I suppose his shape will likely change in the coming few years so you don't want to spend too much - but in the next 5-6 years there are likely to be job interviews, formal events, weddings, funerals etc when he will need one..
My husband only wears his about twice a year, but as a man, you kind of need to have one to hand, even if you don't wear it very often.

fantasmasgoria1 · 11/04/2023 07:44

Have a look on vinted

Leggingslife · 11/04/2023 07:46

Rent one? Moss bros?

HippyChickMama · 11/04/2023 07:56

I bought ds a Red Herring three piece suit and a Thomas Pink shirt for his prom from Vinted for a grand total of £25. All had been worn once for a wedding and are in perfect condition. He'll wear them for prom and then, if he grows out of them (he's 15 and still growing) I'll sell them on or donate to the school for their prom outfit bank

My son's is ASOS. He has a lot of suits though, he got into them in a big way when he started 6th form and has some very unusual ones - it was a struggle finding something more "special" than his day to day wear! He's not especially tall (5ft7 ish) but is skinny. He is often drawn to River Island and Zara suits.

megletthesecond · 11/04/2023 08:39

I have a tall and skinny son. He's never needed a suit before. I was hoping to get one second hand but I've not been organised enough yet.

wantmorenow · 11/04/2023 08:56

Primark do suits for young skinny men.

caringcarer · 11/04/2023 09:39

I got Foster sons from M&S but you can get lovely ones on eBay. Just measure carefully.

CurlewKate · 11/04/2023 09:42

Have you had a look at TK Max? You can get some fabulous not-run-of-the-mill suits there and they often have slim fit ones.

caringcarer · 11/04/2023 09:42

I'd get black or dark navy as he could wear it to a funeral too. He can always wear a light shirt.

HotelNotPortofino · 11/04/2023 09:43

Matalan is also good for cheap suits. And do a modern range in many sizes from skinny lanky teen to should be a rugby player

Piggypong · 11/04/2023 16:02

Tall 16 - 18 year olds here I would definitely recommend Next. Suits come in different fits eg skinny, regular etc and as separates. Some are machine washable and even after washing time and time again come up fantastic and little/no ironing.

KirkST · 11/04/2023 16:45

Vinted is great as you can request measurements from the seller. Loads for sale as young men grow so quickly.

I'd prefer to buy once worn ( and in some cases unworn as proms were cancelled) decent quality labels and fabrics, than a new cheaper made item.

whatadaythatwas · 11/04/2023 16:46

Matalan

Oblomov23 · 11/04/2023 16:58

Great 2nd hand suits on eBay. Dh is superb at buying them for ds1 for prom, 6th form, leavers ball, Uni. You'd be surprised what lovely stuff there is, once you know his measurements.

SomeRolyPolyLittleBatFacedGirl · 11/04/2023 17:01

Vinted definitely.

Last year 80% of the boys came in the same Next suit. Sixth form uniform is business wear so most of them are now wearing it to school which looks odd.
