Teenage DD wants a suit for prom

Usernamesarenoteasy · 23/03/2023 12:08

Help!
Am totally happy to buy a suit, whatever they feel comfortable in works for me.
However. She is almost exclusively dressed in boys clothes, and I think wants a boys suit. Which is not going to give a great fit as she has curves.
On the other hand, getting a woman's suit is 'too feminine' with the added complication of most things not fitting as she is around 5'11".
Where do I even start looking for a masculine looking suit to fit a womanly body which is also tall with long arms and legs??

Buy an inexpensive mens tux and spend what you would have spent on a dress getting it tailored to fit well

MaPaSpa · 23/03/2023 12:10

I got a lovely one from next for my friends wedding, nice navy blue also.

you can still get a good fit, can you get something slightly bigger and get it altered at a tailor?

also collusion on asos have a unisex range

TomatoSandwiches · 23/03/2023 12:10

Buy her a mans suit but get it tailored.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 23/03/2023 12:39

Thanks all. I didn't even consider buying mens and getting it altered. I'll have to have a look and see if I can find someone who can do that in my area and how much it would be likely to cost..
I don't have a massive budget so couldn't have spent a fortune on a dress anyway!

I would maybe ask to borrow a suit from brother , uncle , dad and then juzz it up with belt , broach , badges etc to fit .

EspeciallyDedicated · 23/03/2023 12:46

I wouldn't leave it too long if you need alterations, dressmakers get very booked up in spring/early summer with prom and wedding season.

MyBloodyMaryneedsmoreTabasco · 23/03/2023 12:52

DD is also wearing a suit but is quite straight up and down so a bit easier fit wise for a man's suit. She has had the legs and sleeves adjusted and bought a belt, I'll do something with the waistband if needed.

fairyqueen · 23/03/2023 12:52

Order a made to measure one online from China. We were impressed with the service and fit.

MadamBuxton · 23/03/2023 12:56

If she usually wears boys' clothes then presumably she is happy with the fit of them i.e. I assume not form-fitting or showing her curves. I would have thought buying a men's suit and altering it would effectively make it fit more like a women's suit so defeating the purpose surely? I'd either go for a mens one or more likely a modern baggy/boxy fit womens one.

Catspyjamas17 · 23/03/2023 13:05

I dressed up as James Bond a few years ago and am quite tall, size 12-14 and found a men's dinner suit from Matalan fitted quite well, 38R jacket, 34 waist, 32 long trousers. Cummerbunds are also quite flattering garments, I found anyway.

I often buy men's trousers for me normally- better quality and cheaper and sold by length, and just go up a waist size than I would get in women's, as presumably they sit different and it allows more room for my bottom/hips. My muscly legs fit them better. So in women's I'd want 32"/32" and in men's I'd get 34"/32". Even men's shirts fit me quite well and I'm a 34E bra. Men have big backs! And they allow you to have muscly arms in them, not the twiglet arms clothes designers think women have.

If your daughter is tall, slim and young it should be even easier than it is for me in my 40s, even with boobs/bum. Perhaps go and try some off the peg garments in M&S to get an idea of size at least. She might wear a silk blouse instead of a dress shirt and bow tie.

Go to Next website and type Women Tuxedo Suit in search - lots of options show up, some very glamorous, lots of colours too, and jumpsuit styles which may appeal to her. Search for Ted Baker women suit within Next as well.
I'm attaching link for what I found but I'm in Ireland so you will have access to better prices and maybe a wider selection too!

There are lots of tuxedo style trousers as well which you could team with a sequinned jacket too perhaps.

I did this with my DD for her prom, got a simple tux and then altered it, just be aware that the jacket is harder to change than the trousers, so maybe buy an off the peg mix and match suit so both elements fit as well as possible before alterations.

Also be aware she may want all of her clothes altered or made to measure from now on - there's just no comparison to off the peg stuff, especially if she prefers men's clothes in general! 😄

EBay sell great 2nd hand quality suits. Cheap. Measure her. Buy, get altered. Simples. Dh is superb at buying ds's clothes, particularly suits.

hartof · 23/03/2023 13:29

I have the same issue with 15 yo. It's my sisters wedding in august and she/he (still struggling with this) wants a suit that is light in colour and fabric. I don't know where to start as when we go shopping things don't go well which causes moodiness!

Time40 · 23/03/2023 13:44

If you find a suit that fits well on the shoulders, it shouldn't need any complex alterations - maybe just the sleeves shortening, although your DD is so tall that it might not need even that. I've had quite a few vintage men's suits over the years, and shortening sleeves and trousers is all I've ever needed to do. (My top tip would be to look for a vintage suit, OP - the quality is so very much better than modern suits.)

Thanks so much everyone. I'll have a proper read through and check the links when I get back from work 😊

Would this Moss Bros version work, Hartof?

My late teen/early 20s DD and DS share clothes quite a bit (very similar size and circumference, if a bit differently distributed).

Does she want a suit that fits her like a woman's suit will, or does she want to hide her shape and provide a masculine outline? Maybe speak to her and give her the options.

EmmaEmerald · 23/03/2023 14:29

Why does she want a boys suit in particular?

suits that fit well is fine. I'd make life easier and do whatever trousers she knows fit, and get a tux jacket.

user1494050295 · 23/03/2023 14:31

Boden trousers are good for being tall.

WarningToTheCurious · 23/03/2023 14:33

I did this as a student in the 80s - I bought a man's vintage dinner suit from a second hand market and wore it with a huge red cummerbund.

hartof · 23/03/2023 14:52

Thanks @SnailKite I will share those later. The issue we have is she wants to be a boy but has a girls bum and hips so things tend to be tighter in that area.
