Teenage DD wants a suit for prom

Help!
Am totally happy to buy a suit, whatever they feel comfortable in works for me.
However. She is almost exclusively dressed in boys clothes, and I think wants a boys suit. Which is not going to give a great fit as she has curves.
On the other hand, getting a woman's suit is 'too feminine' with the added complication of most things not fitting as she is around 5'11".
Where do I even start looking for a masculine looking suit to fit a womanly body which is also tall with long arms and legs??

My daughter wore an emerald green tuxedo from Zara for a black tie dinner earlier this year. She only likes to wear ‘boy clothes.’ She teamed it with a black satin shirt she embroidered the collar and cuffs of herself, and a pair of gigantic stack heeled emerald green boots. The suit had to be adjusted around the waist because she is so slim. She looked awesome, and intends to wear the same suit for her prom.

I am a butch girl and when I go to weddings I wear a suit. I am big busted and curvy so I wear a body suit/skinny vest type thing underneath so my boobs are more contained and sit higher but flatter (I know this is going to read similar to binding but it's literally only done to fit my boobs in a men's shirt), mens formal shirts have zero give in the chest and stomach so any curves sit tight and feel like your gonna bust out the top. But also, going too big in the shirt size makes your shoulders and upper arms look baggy and silly. So I recommend a body suit like the one I have linked to make the shirt sit properly if she is curvier.

Good on your daughter for breaking the norm and wearing what she wants! I wish I had her confidence when I was at school, my prom photos had me in a dress and heels my boobs out, everyone staring at me at disbelief there was a curvy woman underneath my usual men's clothes. I wish I had worn what I wanted.

Suits on women can look really feminine, like on Miley Cyrus in her music video Flowers. But it doesn't sound like that's the look your DD is going for.

I saw a picture of a lady who was best woman at her brothers wedding and she was wearing a red, tailored power suit with stilettos.

She looked so fucking cool

If she usually wears boys' clothes then presumably she is happy with the fit of them i.e. I assume not form-fitting or showing her curves. I would have thought buying a men's suit and altering it would effectively make it fit more like a women's suit so defeating the purpose surely? I'd either go for a mens one or more likely a modern baggy/boxy fit womens one.

Exactly what I was thinking. She either wants a masculine suit or a feminine suit. Why make a point of buying a man’s suit and then having it altered to make it feminine?

GoldenCupidon · 23/03/2023 15:58

It's not about trying to make a masculine suit feminine, it's about making sure it stays on her. If she's curvy then it's likely that e.g. trousers that fit nicely on her hips and bum will need taking in at the waist.

What about a charity shop/vintage suit and then tailoring? Could get some really awesome stuff.

I've ordered my DD a suit from Disturbia, have a look on there 👍

Have you looked at mens slim fit suits? Next do them, they seem to be more shapely than your standard fit

I have the same issue with 15 yo. It's my sisters wedding in august and she/he (still struggling with this) wants a suit that is light in colour and fabric. I don't know where to start as when we go shopping things don't go well which causes moodiness!

Again this is under women but is fairly neutral?

I wouldn't search "tux for women" they tend to be the satiny plunge no top look which I imagine is not what they are after

@Usernamesarenoteasy I have a tall very slender who is a little over 6 ft. We went with a next slim suit (I think), they also do a skinny fit, they do different trouser lengths and the good thing is you can actually try them on in a shop. We ended up trying on various colours just to check all the sizing, then settling on one colour and ordering the sizes we knew fitted. I think a jacket and trousers was about £95 from memory.

My DD is doing the same thing and we found that a slim fitting man’s suit (we are in the US so went to a store called Express) fit her best. She only wears boys clothes and wouldn’t entertain a women’s suit - but also wanted the suit to fit her well!
When she was trying them on we found that the biggest problem area was the shoulders. We will also get the sleeves and trousers tailored to fit. She’s already worn a suit to previous dances (some more fun ones in the past) but wants this one to be more formal so we got a black one - am thinking she can use it again for more formal things when she goes to college.
Not the easiest shopping trips.
Good luck!
