Is Lalique fashion jewellery suitable for a 16yr old?

My dd is 16 this month, I’ve already bought a silver ring months ago that I saw, but I’m struggling for something else.

I’ve asked what she would like and she doesn’t know, she’s also very reserved so I imagine she doesn’t want to seem demanding.

16 is a big Birthday to me. I still have the ring my parents bought me. I wanted to buy her something that she will like now but will be able to keep and use in the future. I’ve seen these but I’m not sure if it’s suitable for a 16yr old??

what do you think? Any ideas??

Depends entirely on your DD I'm afraid. My 16yo would think I'd lost the plot if I got her that.

Littlemissprosecco · 08/09/2022 12:08

My 16 year old would have worn it if it is small. Not sure she’d appreciate what it actually is though!

Littlemissprosecco · 08/09/2022 12:09

I think there are a lot of cheaper copies about

Littlemissprosecco · 08/09/2022 12:09

A birthstone necklace maybe???

Gildedcage · 08/09/2022 12:17

Yes it’s small, and comes with a rope but the link is silver so I could change it for a silver chain.

I know there will be cheaper copies but I wanted something special. I would have worn it but as you say she might think I’m off my rocker. 😂.

I looked at Birthstone necklaces but she probably wouldn’t wear one, she’s pretty understated, she doesn’t like anything too fancy.

Out of curiosity what sort of things did you buy your dds?

This is it on the model to give you an idea

I don’t know any 16 years olds that would wear that, it’s very big! I got a simple, silver Tiffany bracelet for my 16th birthday that I still wear now. There isn’t any obvious branding on it.

Littlemissprosecco · 08/09/2022 12:26

Depends on her style. Not sure it’s the in thing tbh

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 08/09/2022 12:28

I think it’s cute. Hard to know without knowing your daughter, but you’re the best judge of her taste.

If you’re looking for suggestions of other brands, teen girls I know like Monica Vinader, Daisy London and Missoma.

Littlemissprosecco · 08/09/2022 12:30

Pandora type stuff is the same price point, a bit trendier if you really want jewellery.
What about an experience? tea at the ritz?? And give her the ring you already have?

Gildedcage · 08/09/2022 12:33

I didn’t think it looked big on the model. I thought it was quite cute and you could dress up or down.

I appreciate all your opinions though. I’ll have a look at those other brands, thank you.

I did think that as well, that I’ve already bought some jewellery.

good point I’ll have a look at something like that, see if there’s anything that might appeal to her.

I think if you want to buy her jewelry she should probably choose it herself or make some suggestions. I was given some relatively expensive things at a similar age that I never wore.

Floydthebarber · 08/09/2022 12:36

I think I just had clothes for my 16th, I've never known it to be a 'big' birthday. Does she have her ears pierced? I had little white gold ones for my 21st that I still wear now. What sort of price are you looking at?

Poppins2016 · 08/09/2022 12:36

To be honest, I don't think it's particularly classic or timeless... I would never have worn it at 16 or now (two decades(ish) later).

Would she wear a charm bracelet (maybe Pandora or maybe more traditional style)? You could add additional charms for her 18th and 21st...

Campervangirl · 08/09/2022 12:39

A bit old for a 16 Yr old.
I thought they all liked pandora, you could get a silver necklace and a charm with 16 on it or charm more relevant to her, a hobby or mother / daughter charm.

Thesearmsofmine · 08/09/2022 12:41

I think it’s a bit dated looking tbh, I don’t think it’s a timeless item.

Gildedcage · 08/09/2022 12:47

Thanks everyone.

She has a charm bracelet (Thomas Sabo) but it never gets worn anymore.

I suppose maybe I’m making it into a bigger deal, certainly she doesn’t want any fuss and hasn’t asked for anything. It probably feels like a bigger thing to me, simply because I can’t believe she will be 16.

She is a beautiful person and would be horrified at the thought of wearing a very expensive or fancy piece of jewellery. I thought the little heart would be easily worn with jeans etc now and when she was older as a simple everyday thing. I should probably just get her opinion on it.

I’ve bought a ring already so maybe I should be thinking about something other than jewellery.

I had to Google what Lalique is, I thought it was just a cheap chunky blue heart necklace by looking at it :(
I wouldnt say it was timeless. I wouldn't have worn it at 16 and I wouldn't have wear it 20 years later now

bcc89 · 08/09/2022 13:48

Also if its luxury, why is it not on a chain?

Littlemissprosecco · 08/09/2022 13:48

What about getting her and you a spa day!

abovedecknotbelow · 08/09/2022 13:49

I've got a Lalique pendant that I got for my 18th, never worn it.

I'd take her shopping and make a day of her choosing something.

Billoddiesbeard · 08/09/2022 14:47

Not sure for a 16 year old. I have a very similar lalique heart pendant in red, bought for me by DH, for a wedding anniversary gift a few years ago. I love it but I am 55 not 16! ConfusedBlush

SalviaOfficinalis · 08/09/2022 14:52

I think the silver ring is plenty as the “keepsake” element of the gift. If you get more jewellery it waters down the meaningfulness of the ring. Remember you’ve still got 18 and 21st birthdays where you might want to add to her jewellery collection too.

Maybe the rest of her presents should just be normal presenty things?

Ylvamoon · 08/09/2022 14:53

I had the same problem a few years back. In the end bought my DD a beautiful butterfly antique silver jewelry box. She loves it.
I think if you want to buy Lalique as form of "investment" get one of the lovely glass animals.
