What age is normal for a first period?

My daughter is 11 years and 10 months and started bleeding today. Shes only 4ft 10 at the moment. Im so nervous thats the end of her growing? She suffers enough trying to fit in with her peers. Shes more on the shy side. Dont want her suffering in the future.
Is this very early to get a period? I was 13.5

I was 11. Didn't stop growing when my period started though

PatriciaHolm · 27/07/2022 00:25

Totally normal. And she'll keep growing for a couple of years yet.

momlil · 27/07/2022 00:28

Thank you. That makes me feel already better. I had a classmate that got her period at 11 and she still 4ft 10 and was always telling me how she stopped growing because of young puberty. Any good supplements to help her grow?

My observation is that girls are getting their period earlier now than in my generation.

In my year group the average was 12-14 but for DSD it was 10-12.

She was at the lower end of that range and no she didn't stop growing.

Growuppeople · 27/07/2022 00:30

my Daughter was 9

EmmiJay · 27/07/2022 00:31

Aww bless her. She'll be fine I bet. I got mines just after I turned 10 and grew to be all of 5ft 4😁

RamblingFar · 27/07/2022 00:33

I believe normal is between 8 and 16. With the average age being somewhere between 10 and 12.

I'm pretty sure I grew taller after starting mine.

Just good nutrition as in a healthy diet.

She shouldn't need to take supplements.

Her height will be determined by genetics.

As a general rule of thumb of you take the average height of both parents, take 1.5 inches off for a girl and add 1.5 inches for a boy re: anticipated adult height.

Obviously there are exceptions but it's a reasonable baseline.

Gently said I think you're overthinking something a person said to you and accepting it as fact.

Children continue to grow through puberty. Puberty does not stop them growing.

I was still in primary when I started and there were several others (this was the 70s). DD was in year 7, only just 12.

We/they all continued to grow. I'm pretty sure girls continue growing until they are 16, I've never heard that starting periods stops that?

lakeswimmer · 27/07/2022 00:35

DD and I were exactly the same age when we started our periods; 14y 3m. She's now 16 and hasn't grown much in the last two years but I don't think that had anything to do with starting her periods, she was a normal adult height by the time she started.

Thanks y'all for calming me down. Im just feeling so sorry for her. She already started acne a few months ago and gaining weight. She actually told me that she had a little blood last months but not a flow.
Shes such an introvert, I feel all this is just pushing her more into her shell.
I watched one of her gym classes the other day and she was the only one her age with developed breast. Her group were all flat.

I started mine at 11 years and 10 months almost 20 years ago. Wasn’t uncommon at all either.

daisydalrymple · 27/07/2022 00:48

I was 14, dd was just turned 12 last summer. She’s grown 4” in the last year. She’d been wearing a bra top for the previous year before starting though, as had most of her peers.

ellieboolou · 27/07/2022 00:50

I was 11 and I'm 5ft 4
Cousin from mums identical twin was also 11 and she's 5ft 8!
She definitely got the best deal of our mums shared gene pool

Frankly I'd be more concerned about getting on top of her acne and getting her to a dermatologist.

If she's already shy/introverted then her skin is going to be a factor that causes her much more anxiety than anything else.

Get her into a good skincare regimen asap.

I was 10 and continued to grow, I'm a fairly average 5ft 7 now.

Also just a gentle reminder introverts are not necessarily unhappy. I feel for my DM who was repeatedly worried about me being introverted from 9 onwards. I still am very much at 43 but I've also been happy and content with that. I have had a brilliant life and I'm happy not needing loads of people. Very few actually.

I've travelled, had a family. A decent career. Through all of it I was still mostly introverted.

Just a reassurance that being shy and introverted isn't necessarily something to worry about unless it is causing her distress without being prompted to worry about it. Give yourself a bit of a break. Really you may be worrying for no reason.

I suspect I was alot like your dd at her age and I promise I have had a happy good life.

PeloAddict · 27/07/2022 01:27

I was 9. And I'm 5ft 10 Grin

sherbertlemons · 27/07/2022 01:32

I read somewhere ages ago that a girls period will usually start then they reach around 7 stone in weight. So hence the varying ages.

Not sure if it's true but I was super skinny as a teen (sadly my metabolism now has other ideas) but I didn't start mine until I was 16, and around 7 stone.

Tigerfeet3 · 27/07/2022 01:50

My slim-built daughter started at 9, by 12 she was a 34DD and reached her final height of 5" 2'. My stockier daughter at 12, no periods, no bra, size 8 feet, 5" 6' and still growing. Both so different, both so beautiful.

Benjispruce4 · 27/07/2022 07:55

Some are 9 , some are 18! 12/13 is just an average.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 27/07/2022 07:56

I was 9/10. I definately didn't stop growing at that point!

gogohmm · 27/07/2022 07:57

My DD's were late - 14.5 and 16, I was just before I turned 12. They are shorter than me

boobot1 · 27/07/2022 07:58

Im 5' 5" started at 10

gogohmm · 27/07/2022 07:58

One of my DD's is only 5'2 and is an officer in the armed forces- height doesn't hold her back, even if you dd is on the shorter side it doesn't matter

Beamur · 27/07/2022 07:59

There's something like a 4 year growth window after periods start. So if your period starts when you are 10, your height at 14 is probably going to be your adult height.
