Does anyone else have an Emo and do you let them dye their hair

Ds (14) has announced he wants to be an Emo (apparently he's not going to be 'one of those ones who slit their wrists, Mum').
That's fine (was a goth myself (sucks gums and pulls up tena ladied undies), but he wants to dye his hair black. I've told him I'll think about it but, tbh I can't see a problem with it, dh, however is not keen, says it might cause problems at school. Do you let yours?

Aw go on, let him- you're a kid once and well, hair colour i so not imprtant. check teh school regs (ours says hair must be all one colour in repsonse to a dyed fringe stage that took over for a bit), but as long as not contraveing any rules let him be who he is.

And keep plenty of pictures for future wedding parties

I have a budding 'alternative'. he is only 10 and has seriously been hassling me to let him have dreads.
Last year he wanted to dye his hair black....

As a former goth/hippy/crusty, obv I'm secretly very proud!
Depends on the school. My old school used to send you home for any hair nonsense at all, (even a little crimping) but these days (joins in gum sucking) schools seem to be more lenient about expressing some individual style (I use the word 'individual' loosly as the favoured hairstyle at our local high school is spiky jet black with bleached tips To a man! (or woman)

Stepson (20 now, bless him) is an Emo, and has dies his hair all colours of the rainbow for years.

Think though, it IS the thin end of the wedge with regard to facial piercings and tattoos, though.

my lot are still only little
but are already going on about hair colours
(any wonder when they see some of mine)

but when they are that age im going to let them

Well this is it, at that age I had bright red crimped hair (were very lax at my school), ds says that a few of his mates have black hair, so it's really just dh I have to convince.
And ds has had me scouring charity shops (even made a special trip to Hitchin) for suitably distressed black jeans, apparently people with 34" legs don't give to charity shops!

Now this will make me sound really old, I do live outside UK so that's my excuse. I have heard of emos and have seen one or two on tv but what exactly are they?

Bit like a streamlined updated goth, wear black quite a lot and a lot of adidas originals footwear etc.

If you want to dissuade him say it'll have to be done properly by a hairdresser so he doesn't damage his hair / flood the bathroom / ruin your towels, and tell him how much it'll cost...

Oh now I know! Feel even older, I have only heard of one of the bands. Bit disappointed , thought it was going to be something more outlandish.

I say let him dye his hair!

find out his school's stance on hair colour first... dsis (16yo) is emo but is limited wrt hair colour by school rules. She has dyed her hair quite dark but not black which is OK but she is not allowed the purple she would love. She does the mad stuff at the beginning of the summer holidays and then sorts it out for September

She looks fab, the whole look really suits her

when I was at school someone in my year got an almighty bollocking for subtle highlights - twas a private school though and a Catholic convent to boot

dsis is at a catholic school but a state one (and no nuns I don't think)

I think it's ridiculous. Surely hair colour is a relatively safe way of expressing your individualty a bit within uniform rules?

At my (quite strict) girls grammar I had pink, blue, orange and red hair in my time.

that should have been banned, we looked ridiculous with our shaggy Jon Bon Jovi hairdos

I agree, I think it is excessive. dsis goes into 6th form in sept though and I think they get more leeway there.
