Does anyone else have an Emo and do you let them dye their hair

Ds (14) has announced he wants to be an Emo (apparently he's not going to be 'one of those ones who slit their wrists, Mum').
That's fine (was a goth myself (sucks gums and pulls up tena ladied undies), but he wants to dye his hair black. I've told him I'll think about it but, tbh I can't see a problem with it, dh, however is not keen, says it might cause problems at school. Do you let yours?

Yes I agree, in the big scheme of things, it is not important.

I always try and keep my 'no' for important things (well I try)

Hope DH comes round.

I have a budding EMO, she wants to dye her hair too, she's only just turned 13, I keep telling her that if she dyes her hair she'll look even more like morticia!

Peapodlovescuddles · 12/01/2008 12:25

oooo tell him to go for it! I have been dying my hair blonder than it really is since I was 9 although part of that was down to my slightly strange parents...
DS (14) dyed his hair peroxide (like Rhydian blonde) a few weeks ago so total other end of the scale but he was really careful in the bath and there was no mess so that was fine, if you threaten him with paying towards the new one if anything gets stained he'll be really careful!

I can't imagine many schools would have problems with black tbh. Even my hugely restrictive secondary school didn't clamp down on that (I was a goth) but they went bananas when my blonde friend bleached hers I love emos, they make me feel all motherly and possessive in a kind of 'look what we did to the next generation way'

janeite · 12/01/2008 13:00

I also have a fledgling emo, 12, and we've been having the "When can I dye my hair black" convo this very morning in fact - I told her 14. We've also had the "When can I have my ears pierced again" convo and I've told her 13 (gulp) - the thing is she has such a pale face (and green eyes) that I'm really not sure that black would suit her, so I'm trying to put it off as long as possible.

I'd let him go for it.

rantinghousewife · 12/01/2008 13:22

Well, I checked the school contract which states that they can colour their hair but it musn't be bright colours, so we have plumped for a nearly black one that fades over 6 weeks. I told him that he could go more outlandish over the longer school hols.
The little (?) sod has now run off with my Husker Du t shirt and wanted to borrow my black levis (Um no, don't think you'll get your 32 waist in MY 28" jeans somehow). And I still haven't found him a pair of slim fit jeans!

black so didn't suit ds. he only did it the once.
do get the shampoo for dyed hair as it fades really quick.

Voice of years of experience of Purple Plum Power:

  • don't let him out of the bathroom while the dye is working - it will drip on your floors.
  • give him a dark coloured towel & insist he only uses that one when dyeing (and doesn't shove it in the washing basket with the rest of the clothes)
-make sure he gets all the dye off the tiles before it runs in to the grouting (or make him buy & use one of those re-whitening pens)
fizzbuzz · 13/01/2008 20:37

Let him. We have all sorts of different colours and styles at the school where I teach.

We have a uniform, but no hairstyle code, so get a wide range of bizarre styles, incl multi coloued and mohicans. I think it's great
