That's it really. He's under 18 and has a fucking tattoo on his wrist.

I'm devastated. I know they're very fashionable but that's not the point. If we'd discussed it I'd have obviously made sure he waited until he was 18. The legal age!! I'd suggested he put it somewhere it couldn't be seen with a shirt on.

As it is he won't be able to do the career he wants with a fucking tattoo on his wrist.

I know MNet will jump down my throat but I'm devastated.

We're booked for consultation to get it laser removed but fuck knows how I'm going to afford it,

His girlfriend has dumped him over it and he really regrets getting it done.

I'm just posting here to moan really, can't stop crying. Stupid stupid little boy.

OP posts:
Harvestyo · 28/08/2021 17:24

I can't think of a career that doesn't allow tattoos.

I'd love to know what it is.

Theworldisquiethere · 28/08/2021 17:24

Oh in fact @Cissyandflora she says he’s “an obviously under 18 year old” so likely to be a fair bit younger

ShingleBeach · 28/08/2021 17:24

Oh dear.

And do the many posters who think it wouldn’t affect any career really think the police allow marijuana leaves on their officers?

For example?

Other professions, teaching, probation officer, social work, where it would be wildly inappropriate or banned, I guess he could just always wear long sleeves. But it wouldn’t work for the police.

Ah well OP: he will learn from this, and at least it can be removed.

Who was he on hol with? But then they can always go for a stroll…

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 28/08/2021 17:24

Come on GreenTartan which career?

Pinkbonbon · 28/08/2021 17:25

Could it not be changed into something else easily enough? A rose instead of a leaf perhaps. Or if it's just thin writing then anything could be put over it.

DancesWithFelines · 28/08/2021 17:25

My son has self harm scars all over his arms, now that's a crying matter for a parent! I wouldn't bat an eyelid over a tattoo.

MumofSpud · 28/08/2021 17:28

OP
Please answer:

  1. WHAT is the tattoo of? A pic or a diagram would be better
  2. How old is he?
  3. What career would he be thinking of?
  4. His g/f dumped him because of the tattoo - are you sure?
Itscoldouthere · 28/08/2021 17:35

I’m currently living in Canada and it’s tattoo central here, I’m amazed at how many people have tattoos and the number they have, so many males and females have legs and arms covered with them.
My eldest (in UK) had a large tattoo on his upper thigh when he was 21, I don’t really like it but you mainly don’t see it. My DH really dislikes them and always said he would never pay towards one, he wasn’t too pleased when DS had his done, but once they are old enough you can’t really stop them if they pay for it themselves, same with piercings.
My eldest brother (who is now in his 60s) had forearm tattoo in his 20s he regretted them and spent years wearing long sleeve shirts. He finally had them removed in his 50s it was very painful and expensive.
I do think it’s a generational thing though and it really is very normal for younger people to now want or have a tattoo, but getting one underage on holiday is never a good idea, however it may put him off ever having any more.

BlueMongoose · 28/08/2021 17:37

@allyouneedisconnection

I'm in a career where no tattoos are allowed. They do still exist. OP, I agree he needs to put in the extra hours at work to get it removed if that's what he wants.
Agreed- it amazes me that people are willing to say that no career bans them when they can't possibly know that. I have hired models in the past for life drawing classes, and though I have hired models with tattoos for group work when the group was agreeable, I wouldn't employ a model with one for my own work, and I would definitely prefer not to if I was teaching. And I know other artists who feel the same. Tattoos destroy form, and I've never seen one that I didn't consider unsightly. If the lad was under 18, whoever did it should be in trouble.

The Metropolitan police allows visble tattoos provided they aren't on the face or ear lobe and aren't discriminatory.

I work in school and our dress code simply requires that tattoos aren't offensive.

Social worker? Really?

Was that the whole quote ?

I see you have no sense of humour.

This.

DH is a police officer and has them from the top of his hands to his neck. It’s never been a problem. The police were very strict about it until about 15 years ago but attitudes have grown laxer and laxer.

Can’t think of any career where a small, easily covetable tattoo on his wrist would impede his employability.

Howshouldibehave · 28/08/2021 17:43

I know loads of teachers with all sorts of visible tattoos!

I think it depends on WHERE you work. At my school the dress code states that tattoos must not be visible. We had a member of staff had one in her neck and no one knew until she had her hair cut and she was told to cover it with make up and wear high necked clothes until her hair grew (it was an bird of some sort).

We have to sign paperwork saying we are aware of the trusts policy on tattoos and piercings so there is no avoiding it.

ParkheadParadise · 28/08/2021 17:51

I've got a crucifix and rosary beads tattoo from my wrist up my arm, no one has ever remarked on it.

Believe me, your child could do a lot worse.

hesadevilishlyhandsomedog · 28/08/2021 17:51

Your son had a tattoo and you cant stop crying? Seriously? It's his body, its his 'mistake' to make. Why are you turning it into such a traumatic incident for all involved? And what sort of a girlfriend drops her boyfriend because he got a tattoo? Unless he's under 10 I don't understand the drama in this post at all.

MondayYogurt · 28/08/2021 17:54

I suppose if he wants to teach in Japan it may be an issue...

Dinosaurballoon · 28/08/2021 17:54

Unless it’s cabin crew where tattoos are an absolute Nono I can’t see what career it may be?

Even then crew wear plasters/some fancy foundation I don’t know the name of, or big strap watches if it’s small on the wrist.

Removal is painful and doesn’t guarantee results. If it’s a hash plant get it redone into something more palatable if he gets embarrassed by it. Quite simple really.

CaMePlaitPas · 28/08/2021 17:57

My heart goes out to you OP. Bloody kids!

Oblomov21 · 28/08/2021 17:57

How big is it. Top of wrist or underside. Wide and big? Give us a few more details.

BigFatLiar · 28/08/2021 17:58

And what sort of a girlfriend drops her boyfriend because he got a tattoo?

Perhaps she doesn't like tattoos?

MrsRobbieHart · 28/08/2021 18:00

And what sort of a girlfriend drops her boyfriend because he got a tattoo?

A smart girl who isn’t interested in wasting her time with someone whose addicted to drugs at 17?

miltonj · 28/08/2021 18:01

Ah nightmare. Hopefully his girlfriend ending things will be a wake up call.

For what it's worth, I have a tattoo on my wrist and it's never stopped me doing anything. But if it's obviously drugs related that's different!

clpsmum · 28/08/2021 18:01

He can absolutely do any career with a tattoo!
