My nearly 14 year old wants a 2nd ear piercing. Shall I let her?

Nothing outrageous, just a 2nd lobe piercing. What age would you allow that?

Mine got her second piercings at 11. She has a lot more since (now 16 and has promised to hold off on any more for a while). Most, especially ear lobes heal well.

MillieMoodle · 16/02/2020 22:07

I was 16 when I had my second lobe piercings done, 11 when I had the first. I'd say 14 is fine.

SleeplessWB · 16/02/2020 22:15

I think it's fine. My mum made a big deal of me not having any piercings - when I got old enough to go and do it myself I went a bit crazy with them - better to be reasonable and keep some control over it. It's really not a big deal, they easily seal over if she doesn't want them anymore.

Helini · 16/02/2020 22:17

Her ear. Her choice.

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/02/2020 22:18

I let mine when she was 11.

SE13Mummy · 16/02/2020 22:18

I think 14 is fine, provided she'll look after it when it's first done. DD1 had her first piercings done at 11, second in both lobes at 13 and top of her cartilage at 14.

CodenameVillanelle · 16/02/2020 22:18

Why wouldn't you? It's not a tattoo!
I did second piercings myself with a pin when I was not much older than her. I still have 3 useable holes that I made 25 years ago!

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 16/02/2020 22:19

Mines getting hers for her 12th birthday

ByAppointmentTo · 16/02/2020 22:20

DD had her ears pierced when she was 12. She then had a second piercing when she 13. She wants more but I've told her that is it until she's left school.

whattodo2019 · 16/02/2020 22:22

2nd piercings are fine. I've put my foot down to more though

Wynston · 16/02/2020 22:25

Whats the difference between 1 and 2???
I took my god daughter at 16 (with her parents consent).
Her nan was really cross and couldn't believe i had encouraged her.
I figured she was a young adult better that i took her to a reputable person.
I will never understand why someone who has an ear piercing can be so against a belly piercing-its a hole in the skin?? At least the stomach can be easily covered??

Davespecifico · 16/02/2020 22:25

It’s possibly against school rules, although apparently several in her class have them.

She can take the first set out, and then still only has one piercing in each ear.

MadamePewter · 16/02/2020 22:28

Yes, of course

LizziesTwin · 16/02/2020 22:30

Not in the middle of term if she has swimming or plays in a team. Otherwise no problem.

Lonecatwithkitten · 16/02/2020 22:31

First set was at 11. I would not allow hair dye or second piercing under 17. She got her second piercing when she was 16 and 4 days took her friend and her passport. Had done her research and had it done with a needle.
She is now saving for balayage. She has a job in the school holidays so I suspect it will be soon.
I feel she has valued it all more as she has had to wait, save and organise it herself.

TheFutureIs · 16/02/2020 22:32

She can just wear the new piercing for school

UncomfortableSilence · 16/02/2020 22:35

DD had her 'seconds' done at 14, she did get them done in the summer holidays, her school allow one small stud so she wore that in the second hole at school to make sure it didn't close up.

SnowsInWater · 16/02/2020 22:38

If school allows it I would let her at that age. If not, as someone else suggested, she could keep the new piercing in at school while it heals and take the others out during the day if she wanted it that much.

IHeartKingThistle · 16/02/2020 22:41

At my school they are only allowed to wear one. If she's likely to be a PITA about it, try to sneak out with both in etc then no way. If she understands that's the rule then maybe. But I'm not letting my 13 year old yet.

BTW 'apparently several others in her class have them' doesn't mean they actually do!

DailyKegelReminder · 16/02/2020 22:43

Yes.

Aragog · 16/02/2020 22:53

Dd has the top of her ear pierced at 13y. She was sensible, looked after and we've had no issues with it ever since.

Aragog · 16/02/2020 22:55

And yes, DD's was against school rules - strict uniform rules and fairly strict for jewellery, hair etc.
But she never had to remove it in the three years she had it there. She managed to cover it with her hair most of the time and the odd teacher who did see it wasn't bothered.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/02/2020 13:26

Dd's first secondary school were really lax about uniform, her second one was non uniform.
She's 18 now, has 18 piercings, 4 tattoos and I've not seen her natural hair colour since she was about 12!

MOLLYJO987 · 17/02/2020 18:31

Dd got her first at age 13 and seconds at 14. She wants to get a third pair but for some reason I told her to wait until she is 16 and see if she still feels the same way.
