Where can I go to look for a cheap prom dress for year 11 dd? I’m thinking less than £100. Is that even possible?!

I hired my daughters we had to get in early (Feb half term) but she got a stunning dress for the price & had it altered to fit perfectly (that did costs a little more)

HarrietSchulenberg · 01/01/2020 18:31

Ebay and charity shops are your friends here. Don't use "prom dress" as a search term, try "evening dress", "cocktail dress" or similar as "prom dress" attracts more lazy searchers who'll bump the bidding up.

wonkylegs · 01/01/2020 19:28

Tkmaxx, keep eye over long term as there is a lot of tat but sometimes there's a gem
Oxfam online
Charity shops
Gumtree / eBay / FB selling sites
Dress agencies

Agree with others widen search terms to evening dress, cocktail dress, formal dress, bridesmaid dress rather than necessarily a prom dress

Thanks for all the tips, that definitely gives me something to start with! I’ll get dd to start searching

Seen some lovely ones on John Lewis - try maxi dress.

knickerthief1 · 01/01/2020 19:48

Next also had some reasonably priced party dresses on sale

Justgivemesomepeace · 01/01/2020 19:50

Quiz, my DD chose one for £75 and one for £35. We sent one back. They only wear it for a few hours!

knickerthief1 · 01/01/2020 19:51

Also I did a post the other day on prom dresses and one poster on there offered a prom dress for free - think it was size 10-12 though and my daughter is smaller than that! Don't know how to link the post though sorry.

PandaG · 01/01/2020 19:52

Borrow one from friend in the year above? Monsoon sale?

DD had an evening dress from Monsoon as a bridesmaid which was significantly less than £100 in the sale. She wore it to prom and then lent it to a friend the following year.

lovethebubbly · 01/01/2020 19:53

ASOS has loads. My daughter bought a beautiful dress for her prom for £40

FairyBatman · 01/01/2020 19:54

Have a look at Everpretty on Amazon. They are fantastic for the price.

I have two that I’ve worn to formal events and you really would think they were much more expensive.

Only thing to watch one them is that the lace isn’t very good. Avoid that though and you’re fine!

doritosdip · 01/01/2020 19:55

Chi Chi London

Local FB selling page for one that's been used once?

Unescorted · 01/01/2020 19:56

Ebay - DD got 2 for about £5 each. Search for used bridesmaids dresses.

FanSpamTastic · 01/01/2020 20:05

If you come to London at all then try Fonthill Road near Finsbury Park. There are lots of small shops selling evening dresses.

AnneOfAvonlea · 01/01/2020 20:14

Dorothy perkins have loads in sale at the moment for under 40 quid

CoolShoeshine · 02/01/2020 16:39

The brands Chi Chi and Little Mistress have fantastic dresses, usually they have plenty well under £100.
It would be well worth buying now in the sales as they probably won’t be reduced nearer to prom season.

Iwantamarshmallowman · 02/01/2020 16:55

Look at the asos clearence section you should easily get one for under £100.

imintheghetto · 02/01/2020 17:09

Definitely possible. DDs dress was Little Mistress - bought from House of fraser and £80 iirc.

I think the sorts of boutique places where you have to book an appointment are where the prices rack up. The dresses in the one local to me looked pretty blingy and I gave that a wide swerve.
