Single bed or double bed

Can somebody please tell me why they bought a double/queen bed for their kids? My kids have single beds, but all their friends seem to have double beds. I’m just curious.

My eldest just inherited mine when I got a new one- she has/had a big enough room, so it wasn't an issue, plus I have plenty of double bed linen.

She's been a student away for a while for long periods now too, so it comes in handy as a guest bed too.

It hasn't spoilt her for single beds either, because she's been used to them while in digs.

My DC won't really fit in single beds with any comfort. DS is 6' 2", DD is 5'9".

They both have 'small doubles' because that's what fits in the space, and they can sleep diagonally. I might need to get a stool or something for the end of DS's bed if he grows any more. If we had less space they would just have to get on with it, but I think DS would start sleeping on the floor.

If you had room and the choice wouldn't you choose a double for yourself?
I wish I had gone straight for doubles after cots. Both have ended up very tall, DS2 is 6'4". His feet hang over the end of the bed but at least he can starfish.

Ds is tall, I would prefer a double for, myself , room was big enough and ottoman double has loads of storage space

Ds 14 I s getting a double bed soon as he moves into a new bedroom.
Ds 17 also got one at 14.

Singles aren’t comfortable. I’m only 5’3 but struggle to sleep in a single.

DD1 wanted one
DD2 had her room done so we brought one
DS wants one but will have to wait a while (cash flow)

We don't have them for ours - bought their current beds when they were each around 11 or 12. Before that they had a full length, low and narrow child's bed (youngest inherited it from eldest). Never thought of getting a double then and they have good quality beds so have no intention of replacing them. We do have rooms large enough though youngest is in a smaller room at the moment (4th larger room full of junk and needs doing up). Both girls and not particularly tall.

More room, more comfortable to spread out in. My dd has the largest bedroom in the house so she might as well have a double bed.

DS is 14 and looks really cramped. We are just about to get him a Queen bed.

My daughter is 14 and replaces her cabin bed with a double bed a few months ago. Makes it easier for her sleep overs

More comfortable all round. Good for sleepovers, if we have guests staying it gives us more options (I go in with dd, dh shares with ds so people can use our bed)

If you had the choice, which would you choose! I don't understand why you would buy a single unless the room was too small to allow it.

Dd1 ended up with the guest bed when DD3 arrived. Dd2 got our bed when we traded up to a king. DD3 is still in a single but will change soon. Much easier for sleepovers, guests staying and even a bed time cuddle.

We already had them. When we moved in together we had my US queen (= UK king) and DH's 2 similar size beds. When DH (then BF) bought a new bed for his UK flat, he bought one the same size as mine b/c he liked it. Later, when he bought second bed for his guest room, I advised him to get the same size as his own bed so that the sheets would fit.

DS got a double a few months ago at 13, he’s already 5’10” and in a men’s large top. His growing shows no signs of slowing down, more space will be needed.

My ds has a cabin bed that he's outgrown, so he sleeps in the spare bedroom double bed and is a lot more comfortable there. If we have visitors he can cope with the cabin bed for a night or two. His room is too small for a double.

All mine have had double beds from about 10 years old. I wouldn’t buy a single bed if I needed to replace one and had the space for a double.

My daughter has a double, she's 18 and I think it's a bit strange for an adult to be in a single.
My son, 13, will have a double when he can bear to part with his kiddy stuff he has under his single bed.

Got DS a small double when he was 12. There was space and it seemed a nice idea. He's 14 now and 5'10 !

I think it depends how much space their is in the room and what's the most useful use of the space. In a small room it seems daft to have a big bed and then no space for other things. But if you have a nice big room then they may as well be nice and comfy in a double bed!

We're moving soon and getting all the 4 kids aged from 18-6 double/king size beds. My 6ft2 14 year old cannot wait!

We recently moved from a bunk bed to a small double for DS1 (14). He's nearly 6 ft and a broad build so thought he would appreciate the extra space.

He definitely does as it's now even harder to get him out of bed at the weekend ConfusedGrin

Mine have had doubles right from leaving their first toddler beds. So much easier if they are poorly to get in with them rather than them with you and DH. Plus sleepovers are a doddle.

My boys are teens now and over 6 foot, so it would be weird for them to be in singles I think!

My Dd has a small double as a normal double would not fit in the room. She got it last year when she was 13 I think
