DD won't take hoody off even in hot weather

My 13 year old daughter is constantly in her red hoody and jeans even in this hot weather, TOday we went to the seaside and it was boiling and everyone round us where in t shirts, shorts, or dresses but not my daughter in her hoody and jeans I kept askin her if she was hot but she kept saying she wasn't. I know when I was a teen I wouldn't show my legs so lived in my jeans but had no problem with just having a t shirt on top is anyone else's child like this

Maybe your DD has low self esteem and doesn't want to show her body. She may not of been hot. Now I don't want to alarm you OP however from personal experience I would want to be sure she is not self harming.

OP teenagers are strange at times, we've all been a bit weird! I had a friend who never took her school jumper off, and I'm talking through a long hot Aussie summer! She hated her arms apparently.

Is there something your dd doesn't like? It was pretty hot in London today, no way l could handle a jumper.

I used to live in hoody, combats, docs and a woolly hat in all weathers. Never self harmed in my life. I thought I was being incredibly different and meaningful. Really I was a teenage idiot.

I used to do this to hide sweat patches under my arms. Could she be doing this? If so, I recommend driclor solution - it was a godsend to me.

14y dd kept her hoodie on today too, infact all week though a couple of days were cold anyway. New hoodie from her holiday - couldn't wear it there as it really was far too hot!

No self esteem or body issues - wears tiny shorts and crop tops lots. Just new hoodie and a teenage mind!

I left her to it!

This was what made DD1 realise DD2 was self harming. Hope it's not.

I used to do this several reasons none of which include self harm. Reasons included feeling self conscious about weight, forgetting to shave arm pits, hiding sweat patches, just really liking my hoodie, feeling the cold more than others etc etc

It's self-consciousness about her body in some way, isn't it? She obviously isn't physically comfortable wearing it, but it brings her comfort. Either she's feeling overweight or too thin, or she's self-harming or she thinks that the hoodie identifies her as a cool girl. It could be anything.

Does she ever come downstairs in a tee-shirt or pyjamas?

Hi did wonder about self harming but on occasion do get a glimpse of her arms and legs and haven't seen any evidence so don't think it's that so I do think it is a body conscious issue although she has a lbut when I have mentioned it to her she just says there's no reason she just doesn't feel hot and she just feels comfy like that and I suppose if she's happy like that then I will leave her to it just wondering if any one else's teen does this

She is not skinny or over weight

My daughter was like this at her age - very, very self-conscious. Now she's in her 20s she does a lot of yoga and the difference it's made, both to her confidence and to her body, is amazing. YouTube has a lot of videos showing how to do it - why not suggest it to your daughter? It was amazing for my daughter's depression (not saying your daughter's depressed, btw.)

Def not pregnant and like I've said have seen arms so no self harming just guess it must be weird teen stuff

I just got back from a holiday with 3 teens in the south of France. It was around 30 degrees. None of them took their hoodies off.

No weight issues or self harm. No pregnancies (2 were boys)

One also refused to wear swimming trunks but was happy to go swimming in combats and a t shirt and walk back from the beach dripping wet.

They are just weirdos!

I constantly wrote a light Mac throughout my teen years and even replaced it with the same one when it wrote out. No self harm. Normal weight verging on skinny. I did it because I hated my arms and nonexistent bust. I eventually grew out of it as I gained in confidence. I'm glad my mum never brought it up because it would have probably made it worse.

My brother spent his teenage years between ages 13 to 16 (when not in school uniform) wearing a thick blue wool polo neck jumper, including during the hot summer of 76. My mother had to wrestle it off him to wash it. He spent most of those summers up a tree or up a hill trying to summon up his inner artist. It must have worked because he is a published poet now Smile

V glad you started this thread op, my DD is wearing a hoodie today in 27 degree heated; needed a reminder that this is normal teenage behaviour!

A good reminder that teenagers very kindly act in weird ways to make the rest of us look normal Grin

actually children & teens can have a different metabolism so their body heating / cooling can be different to an adult...

or they can just be weird and enjoy the comfort of wearing a nice snuggly hoodie!

My DS (13) does this, with his hood on in all weathers.

It's a cocooning thing, he also likes to sit on the sofa with a blanket over his head.

It is their attempt at an invisibility cloak imo, nothing sinister!

Pregancy/tattoo/selfharm Hmm bit dramatic! Just normal teen behaviour.

She's a teen and she's finding her look. I wore ripped woollen tights, long black skirt oversized black holey jumper, DMs and long hair covering my face through all weathers at that age. There are pictures of me as a teen on holiday looking ridiculous hot and grumpy, but I was a goth and sticking to it.

You really don't need to read any great meaning into it unless there's a whole load of other stuff.

DD is 12 and has lived in her goody and skinny jeans all summer, and will probably to so when we are away next week. She is a bit self conscious as she's a D cup already which she hates but I'm just leaving her to it....

So glad I read this thread, dsd comes every weekend in her hoodie, coat and then sits under a blanket, I was getting a bit concerned, so glad it's pretty normal.

When do they grow out of it?

My niece did this for a whole summer a couple of years back when she was 14 - she was just going through a really self-conscious stage. This summer she's been happily wearing strappy vest tops so I think it's fair to say she's grown out of it now..,
