losing control of clothing choices = white jeans argh

how the hell do i get dust/mud/grass stains out of them? vanish and hot wash? top shop stretchy ones say 40 degrees on label. surely 60 wont kill them?

I know this might be a bit off topic but I couldn't find a topic for 'uptight 50s housewife'.

I have noticed quite a lot of scoffing at the 50s housewife. My mum was one, no washing machine, fridge, money or television. She kept the house sparkling and us well fed. There was no central heating, just a coal fire in the living room. Her hobbies were dressmaking, embroidery and knitting. What is there to laugh at in that list? She also worked part time from home. She was no house wifey in her attitude either. Comments please but be respectful of a hard working lady.

A friend told me years ago to use supermarket own brand liquid specifically for colours. I have tried Tesco, Asda,Lidl and Aldi's versions and they all work the same. Pour some neat onto the stain, rub in a little, leave for 5/10 minutes then put on your usual machine wash with your usual detergent. It might need repeated a couple of times but usually works perfectly the first time.

If you have tried all the above with no sucess I would be tempted to use a mild bleach solution on the stains. I know clothes don't last as long, but who wants to wear stained clothes?!

So - sink of hot water with a washing powder capsule in, a big scoop of vanish, leave to soak overnight, then into the washing machine. I never wash anything over 40 degrees and my whites are PRISTINE, MOTHERFUCKER.

May I suggest not getting the stains out so that they will not be worn again or the wearer gets the stains out themselves :-) When DD is old enough to buy white jeans she will be old enough to wash them herself. Slovenly mother that I am.

Failing that, assuming they're completely white I'd stick them in a bucket of diluted bleach overnight.

I think the teen has bought the white jeans. OP wouldn't have chosen them (but is 'losing control of [her teen's] clothing choices' ) and is now stuck with laundering them nevertheless.

yes just come back to my thread to find it is much more interesting than I imagined from such a dull question. I guess I could more accurately describe myself as an uptight teens mum (is that how we refer to this decade?), rather than unintentionally insult mothers of strangers. This is the first time since eighties I have encountered white jeans since dd is only just a teen, the last time my mum was washing them. Unfortunately I can't ask her since her whites were GREY MOTHERFUCKER

You need Vanish Gold, the sort in the roll on container a bit like a deodorant - not too hot a wash or it sets the grass stains. Works much better than normal vanish.

So the hot is bad then? ok I'm going for vanish with a forty degree. unfortunately the large gap in my posts was me doing my foodshop so am stuck with a simple vanish stick. Am going to get dd to give it a go and show her the button to press too, that'll cheer her up.
