Daughter 152cm at 12

I'm putting this on the teenager board as I want to ask the mums of girls who are a bit older. I have done the average of my height & her fathers height less 7cm because she's a girl and that comes out at about 164. Could she really grow 12cm in only a year (I think girls stop growing after 13). That hardly sounds possible. She got her period a couple of months before she turned 12).

By the way, I'm not putting pressure on her to be taller than I am! I think she will be surprised if she's not.

Everything I can see on line says the big growth spurt is between 11 & 12. And yes she has grown a lot in the last year.

Dh and I are both tall (185/179 cm). Dd is just 14 and about 175 cm, grew most between the age of 12 and 13.

Girl's certainly don't stop growing at 13. These calculations are just rough guidelines - you only have to look at how different siblings can be in height - so afraid you'll just have to wait and see!

I thought they stop growing 2 years after getting their first period?

Well I am 152cm and it is the perfect height imo! Sounds like she could grow a bit though at 12.

oh yeh, I'm only 156 myself! but her father is tall and she has grown up believing that it is inevitable that she will end up looking down on me! I'm not so sure now. She is still shorter than I am, and she's had her period for, oh, 6 months now actually. So, tall father or not, she is her mother's daughter!

oh, I missed a few posts before I posted myself. Yes, I'll have to be patient. I can be patient! I'm just a bit worried about her that she sees it as being carved in stone that she will be xxxx tall. She is scientific about it. And these things are often, random, recessive, rogue gene, throw back......... whatever.

In theory I think most of us have stopped growing by about 18, but that's not always the rule - some teenagers have a growth spurt in their mid teens, it's difficult to guess.

Look again at what you found online - do the sites state growth spurts at specific ages as fact, or do they use terms like 'typically' and 'the average is...' and 'usually?'

My dd started her period at 10, she's now 15 and she is about 162cm. She grew very slowly, almost unnoticeably and certainly didn't have a growth spurt.

People used to comment that she was tall when she was 11 or 12 but then she didn't grow anymore after that.

I'm 175 cm, I am surprised as I expected her to be at least as tall if not taller.

Why is it you are concerned to know what her adult height will be?

I am 152 and am pretty sure I didnt grow after the age of 13.

My DD almos 17 is 155 and has also not grown since age 13.

DD2 14 is 153, we will have to wait and see if she will grow some more. I think she will just because she is completely different in build and stature to myself and DD1.

We all measured at my parents house last week. The DDs Dad is 6ft tall on the dot.

I'm not concerned. She herself is expecting to grow taller than she is now. Also, I am interested in what she'll be like as a 'grown up'.

I don't think it's as clear cut as that - I had my first period at 12 and still grew after I was 16.

I was 5'1 at age 12, 5'8 at 14 and 5'10 at 17

You see, I got my period at 12 and was at full height by then. I was full height (5'7) at 10 though. I was the boss at primary school netball.

I'm sure there are some girls who grew little or not at all after 12 or 13, but many do continue growing until at least 18. DD1 is nearly 17 now and is due to have jaw surgery when she's 19. The reason the surgeon won't do it earlier is precisely because she might not have stopped growing fully until then. Her most recent growth spurt was this year, and the doctor thinks she has one more spurt of a few cm to go yet.

When I was pregnant with her we had a high-definition ultra sound done at 20 weeks (the anomaly scan in the UK) by a gynaecologist, who predicted from the length of DD's shin bone in the womb that she might get up to 180cm tall. At the time we were sceptical, as neither DH nor I are all that tall, but it does look like he's going to be right.

I stopped growing at 12. I know this because we had to measure our height in a science lesson when I was in year 7. I was 150cm then and am still 150cm now.

Wanker, yeh, I think the period thing, that you don't grow much more after 1st period dates back from when girls got their period at 13. Not sure it is still a good indicator of when growing finnishes.

I was 5'3 at 13, 5'8 at 14 and was 5'10 by age 18. When I was born the midwife told my mum I'd probably be tall because of the length of my back.

she could have a way to go yet, or she might not grow anymore. It can be hard to tell sometimes. I was 5'4 when I was 12 and I haven't grown at all since, I'm late 20's now. In fact from about 9 onwards I didn't grow much at all, but I had hit full puberty by then.

if you calculate your expected height based on your parents height, was it five foot four?

I was 5 foot on my 13th B-day and 5 ft 7" on my 14th. By 15 I was 5, 10". AF started at 13 1/2. From dinner party discussion with paediatricians over dinner they have said that there are 2 types of 'tall child'. One who is always tall, way over the average and grows pretty steadily from v little.....definitely did not just have an early growth spurt. The other ones (more common) are the late growers; often the ones who seem to get smaller in the class as everyone else passes them from 11-13/14 (as girls, boys are later anyway) I was one of those. I have a tall 14 yr old DS (5' 10" 1/2 now and was 5' 9" only 8 weeks ago) and a tall DD2 - both have always been taller than average....lanky as my DM would say. DD2 is v average though and is now one of the smaller ones in her year. She's 12 1/2, and her feet are still small too so I don't think she's going upwards any time soon. No period yet and I strongly suspect a real late grower as I can't imagine a very tall mother and 6 foot dad end up with a 5'5" dd, although I could be wrong.

My sister is nearly 16 and she has grown a little over the last year. Not a lot, but I think two centimeters or so.

One interesting thing is my dd is the same height as me (she's 10) and her hands are the exact same size as mine. I think she will definitely grow a bit though. Dh has said she will be 5"6 since she was born so we will see.

the calculations can't be relied on though - if i do the calc based on parental height, I should be 5'6". On of my sisters is about that, another is about 5'8 and i'm 5'10. I have 4 brothers who vary from 5'7 to 6 foot - they should all be about 5'11.

The chart however allows for a variance of plus or minus 10 cm (about 4 inches) so, when you take that into account we all fit in the tolerance for the calculation.
