For those with teenage dd's, at what age (if ever) did you allow them to get their belly button pierced ?

dd was 3 days off 16...tho the place we went to do them from 12,with parents consent

SirBoobAlot · 04/08/2010 22:17

My parents said I could get it done at 16 - though I got it done a few months before. I had genuinely misunderstood them; they said "half term", I took that to mean the soonest one, not the one after my 16th...

Had to tell my mum whilst she was in the bath for fear of reaction

ears I wouldn't care
but body piercing would be when they are old enough to go alone iynwim.
(disclaimer I have a ds with body art and piercings)

AnyFucker · 04/08/2010 22:23

thanks everyone so far

my dd has asked for it for her 15th birthday

I have said I will consider it

some of her friends are already there (only just turned 14)

I don't really know anything about body piercings, tbh

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 04/08/2010 22:24

at 16 they can go alone,no consent required

BitOfFun · 04/08/2010 22:41

It's not the end of the world, I guess. I would worry she was going to be flashing it in hideous belly tops, but we are all allowed to make ourselves look ridiculous at that age.

mears · 04/08/2010 22:45

My 16 year old had this done a fortnight ago. I really didn't want her to and said she could only have it done if she paid for it herself. I found it hard to give her good reasons not to because she already had pierced ears which she took really good care of. It actually does look pretty and I ended up giving her half the cost back. At the end of the day, it is a hole that will close over and will cause no lasting damage. Essentially she defeated me

AnyFucker · 04/08/2010 23:38

thanks so far guys

will bump again tomorrow

still on the fence here

My DS (15) wants his belly button done. I would prefer it to something visible on the face or ear but not sure. Is it the done thing with boys?

sharbie · 04/08/2010 23:42

maybe never

AnyFucker · 05/08/2010 00:16

why do you say that, sharbie ?

OP posts:
sharbie · 05/08/2010 00:23

dd only 12 at the mo so hopefully a long way off.she begged and begged to have her ears done day and night - then promptly took them out and they have healed over.
not keen on bb or any other kind of piercing and hate tattoos.

sharbie · 05/08/2010 00:26

to add i was quite a wild child and did all the ear piercing /hair dyeing extreme stuff at 15 but it was kind of fashion statement then and very unusual.so not a fogey but neither of mine take after me ...yet.

helewele · 05/08/2010 00:34

My dd is 4, so it's not a big issue for me atm I have been working with a youth group (10-13) of girls and ALL of them have it done
I was 16 when I got mine done, and my mum only said I could do it because she thought I would back out!! It was a huge mistake - after 51 weeks, it ripped out when I turned over in bed, and I had to have it stitched, now have a scar, and an oddly shaped bellybutton my advice, don't bother!!

jabberwocky · 05/08/2010 00:38

I was 33 when I had it done and it took a looong time to heal. She had better be really diligent at looking after it. My nephew's former gf got a nasty infection with hers.

serenity · 05/08/2010 00:39

I'm seconding the 'when she's old enough to get it done without permission' and also 'when she's old enough to be able to pay for it herself' I think I'd be happiest if she waited until she was 18 tbh, although I couldn't give a logical reason why 18.

ablemable · 05/08/2010 03:54

DD1 had hers done at 16.

AnyFucker · 05/08/2010 09:42

thanks again so far

tegan · 05/08/2010 09:47

my dd1 is 12 and alot of her year have had it done but dd doesn't want to, if she did i would probably be ok but dh would not let her for definate. If she ever wants piercings i'm fine with it as i have had my belly button done

AnyFucker · 05/08/2010 10:47

gosh, 12 is very young

a friend of mines DD, who is 12, sneaked off and had it done without permission

if my own dd did that, she knows she would suffer some very awful consequences

we are discussing it, I am considering it and that is how we are dealing with it

I suspect I will say yes (she doesn't know this yet), mainly because of the way she has approached things

she is 15 in 2 months

GetOrfMoiLand · 05/08/2010 10:59

Blimey 12 is very young.

I would wait until 16 at least AF. DD has asked and i said she will have to wait until then.

She also asked if she could have her lip done, I said she could have that done on the 12th of Never.

I am normally laid back but I loathe piercings with a vengeance.

loopyloops · 05/08/2010 11:42

Just to say, I took mine out about 2 years ago and it hasn't closed over yet.

BollockBrain · 05/08/2010 11:44

DD 15

myself - the grand old age of 34. (long gone now)
