Mum tattoo

mrssunshinexxx · 10/11/2023 15:29

Got an appointment booked in a fortnight. I want to get a tattoo for my mum, I lost her nearly 4 years ago very young and it's just something I want to do. Would it be really naff to just get 'mum' somewhere?

Yes

dementedpixie · 10/11/2023 15:34

Did she have a favourite flower? Maybe a flower with Mum in a pretty script

FirstFallopians · 10/11/2023 15:34

Well, do you like the idea of a Mum tattoo- is in is it aesthetically pleasing to you?

There are other ways to memorialise her that are a bit more “private”- a favourite/birth flower, her favourite animal etc.

It means that if people ask you can let them know a little bit about her if you’d like to, rather than a plain MUM tattoo.

Rawrrawr1 · 10/11/2023 15:36

Get it done.. I have Dad on my foot in memory of mine who passed a good few years ago.
It's your body, if it's what you want do it.
FYI I'm 40 with a few tattoos last one a few months ago..very professional role

SecretVictoria · 10/11/2023 15:36

Get whatever you want, it’s your body! See if the tattoo artist has ideas, maybe based on what she liked/was like.

dementedpixie · 10/11/2023 15:39

Have a look online too to see if there's anything you like. Some have butterflies, flowers, hearts, etc

NoMoreRedWineforFreda · 10/11/2023 15:42

Did your mum have a favourite flower?
Or is there something in her name that could be illustrated?

Or did she have a nickname for you?

I don’t think just ‘Mum’ is naff, but it is sort of kitsch.

What sort of lettering were you thinking? And where would you have it?

mrssunshinexxx · 11/11/2023 06:54

Thinking something like this very delicate but Mum not mama. No favourite flower that springs to mind when I think of her.

I love the old school kitsch style tattoos so MUM with hearts/daggers/swallows would be right up my alley.

I have two tattoos for my mum who passed earlier this year. One is a phrase about motherhood and one is the time of her death on my sternum.

mrssunshinexxx · 11/11/2023 07:43

What's the phrase @thelittlestbird I love a few grief related quotes but just not convinced I want them inked on me but I know I'll never regret the word mum it's my favourite in the world

I'd go with mum as you're so connected and drawn to it.

Sod what other people think.

The one in the pic will look terrible after a few years so a good tattooer will want to do something a little bigger so it’s still readable after the inevitable spread caused by aging skin but if you just want the word, do it, it’s your body.

Sorry for your loss, losing your mum is a profound and life changing experience. I still miss mine every day (she died almost 19 years ago) 💐

Dartmoorcheffy · 11/11/2023 08:21

Do you have her signature on an old birthday card . You could have that copied.

mrssunshinexxx · 11/11/2023 08:31

@Dartmoorcheffy I do, I also have her writing 'love you forever , Mum' in a birthday card which I was toying with but just not sure

@NoMoreRedWineforFreda thank you and the same to you it's a heartache that never goes away x

I love that!

The last words my mother ever said to me were ‘I love you… and I love your sister too!’ (my sister couldn’t get to the hospital in time but my mother always treated us fairly, right to the very end ❤️)

I'd have this, it's lovely and personal.

I have a feather in memorial as part of a larger tattoo.

EATmum · 11/11/2023 09:15

I'm having a tattoo today, first ever (age 50) and it includes a forget-me-not for my mum. The pain of losing her is constant - and conversely I know how lucky that makes me, that I had so much love. Remember your mum in exactly the way that works for you.

muchalover · 11/11/2023 09:17

My DD has a tattoo in my handwriting.

DRS1970 · 11/11/2023 09:23

You don't sound confident that is the tattoo you want. My only advice would be to be certain in your own mind what you want before you even think of having the tattoo done. Perhaps try speaking with the tattoo artist before you take the plunge. I am certain they will have strong feelings on what to avoid and what to consider.

Parentswriting · 11/11/2023 09:29

I have both my parents writing on my arm & it's facing me despite the tattooist saying it'll look odd because no one will be able to read it.

It's so I can read it as it's my message to me from my parents!

Maybe you could do something like this to honour your mum?

It's MOTHER IS A VERB.

I think it's really easy to slip into overthinking tattoos. I wear mine pretty lightly. They're a record of where I am right now. If that changes, it changes - but it was still true to me at a particular moment and something I thought worth capturing.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 02/12/2023 15:46

Have you had it done yet @mrssunshinexxx?

mrssunshinexxx · 02/12/2023 21:26

Hey @SiouxsieSiouxStiletto no it's 18th dec my original app got cancelled, I'm having
' always and forever, mum x ' in her writing on the back of my arm from a birthday card ❤️
