I suggest replacing with guinea-pigs; they live much longer and generally a much more interactive and friendly pet.

I know someone locally who used to breed them and possibly still does if you're interested?

Are you worried it will ruin their day if you tell them in the morning? If so then I think waiting til after school is absolutely fine.

DD is 11. I think she might notice, as he was very old and raggedy looking. He was nearly three so a very old boy. Strangely enough we had him out on Monday and we talked about how he looked old and we should expect the worse soon.

At least he went in his sleep, he looks very peaceful. I'll find a box and we'll bury him after school tomorrow.

I am selfishly thinking it will be hard to get them to the childminders by 7.30am if I tell them in the morning.

Thanks Random, he was very interactive (for a hamster). We only got our new cat on Sunday so they do have a distraction.... but thanks anyway.

I dread this happening to ours. randomness, our hamsters are incredibly friendly and interactive, and are out the cage several times everyday. Admittedly, you were right on the longevity.

are you absolutely sure it is dead, cos i think it is hamsters that are known to look dead, i.e shut down, but more hibernating sort of thing. perhaps someone can clarify if this is true.

Yes just adopted a 10 year old rescue one. So far he has been hiding under the bed all week...

There was a story in my mums local paper....

This man's hamster died... Or so he thought... He was of a good age - nearly 4 years old. He buried it in a box in the garden.

Two weeks later, a neighbour knocks on the mans door saying he has hammy. Man said no he died and I buried him.... The neighbour DID indeed have the hamster, he had just hibernated, dug himself out of his grave and the neighbour found him in his garden.

Yes I heard about the siblings. That effectively means we have no chance of getting OP. Trouble is the first 4 or 5 schools nearest to me are all ones I would not want DS2 to go to for one reason or another.

He should get into G on the sibling rule though so not too worried.

dogscock is right (great name btw). My DP works with someone who buried his hamster, funeral. DC's crying etc.. Only to find the hamster running around the garden a week or so later! Renamed Lazarus (made that last bit up ).

Well if it ends up in the garden then the foxes will probably get it. They ate the rabbits last year.
