How often do you wash your hair?

I was at the hairdressers today, as my colour was fading again.

She asked me how often I wash my hair and I said every other day and she said that's why my colour fades so quickly, and that she only washes her hair once a week

Her hair always looks fab though, whereas mine always looks greays and awful by the 3rd day. I won't leave the house at that point!

How often does everyone wash their hair??

Wow, lots of different routines then! I suppose it's true that it just depends on your hair type, if I don't wash mine every other day I look like a scarecrow.

It's interesting though because my nanna is 78 and she has the most amazing hair you have ever seen...shoulder length, volumous, shiny and so bouncy! She is quite amazing for her age, and she always says that this generation 'over styles' there hair and that when she was younger they could only get their hands on shampoo once a month, and they had to go into another town for it!

I have tried in the past to get bouncy 1940's style hair, and it just flops back down...I think my nanna might be right about us over doing our hair!

When I used to bleach my hair I didn't use shampoo for over a year, just a weekly/fortnightly condition.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 26/02/2010 13:07

Every other day - and I use conditioner once a week.

I have succumbed to a shower cap as I was sick of trying to hold my head out of the way on days I don't wash it.

My hair is very very easy though. (One of my few good features) It is very thick with a natural wave and volume, never frizzes and it is so easy to manage since I went from long to a bob.

FloSnake · 26/02/2010 13:32

Only when I have to! Now every 3-4 days (age 45), used to be every 2 days. When pregnant managed to last a whole week!
I could never understand those TV ads that said: "Now you can wash your hair EVERY day with XXXX mild shampoo..." Who on earth would want to??

NomDePlume · 26/02/2010 13:47

zanz1bar · 26/02/2010 13:55

Just washed my hair after reading this thread.
I have staight, lank and very fine hair. Try to leave it a day or so between washes but I look awful with lanky greasy hair. Feel a lot better now.

Every 3 days or so (unless DS chucks his breakfast at my head).

shockers · 26/02/2010 14:17

I try to go a day in between with dry shampoo but often it's every day because I smell like a sheep and my head gets sore if I don't.
I've never washed DS2's hair ( he's 9) and it's silky and gorgeous even though he swims 3 times a week

trice · 26/02/2010 14:21

daily when I go to the gym or every three days at home. It usually looks a mess though.

Ambi · 26/02/2010 14:25

Every other day, although I'm considering lessening that now after hearing all the once-a-weekers. I have really thick (nightmare to dry hair) which I bet will improve if I don't wash it as often.

hugebelly · 26/02/2010 14:27

every 2-3 days. it gets greasier quicker if I have it down as I touch it more often.

CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 26/02/2010 14:28

Every other day without fail.

It just feels disgusting, smelly and greasy if I don't .

Also I really notice that it starts to kind of shed by day 2, so if I run my fingers through it a few hairs come away in my hand and I'm left wondering whether I can be bothered to walk to the bin (or be a slattern and drop them on the floor), which is quite annoying.

Sekhmet · 26/02/2010 14:29

every 7-10 days, but my hair is to my waist and i think you can get away with washing it less when it's longer. If it starts to look a little egh I just wear it up.
All depends on hair and skin type, I know my OH washes his at least once a day, if not twice if he's going out at night!

StevieDunton · 26/02/2010 14:29

every 3-4 days, though wet it daily. always looks shite immediately after washing

looks bit like renee zellwegers in chicago but brunette

Lovecat · 26/02/2010 14:33

Every day - another very fine, lank, greasy bod here! I also work in London so it's starting to look dirty around the fringe by the time I get home at night - so if I'm going anywhere in the evening that doesn't merit and entire restyle I give it a quick spritz of baptiste as well.

I recently went from blonde/toffee highlights to a darker mahogany shade, more like my natural colour, and the difference in how quickly it gets greasy is phenomenal - almost worth having my hair bleached again so I don't have to wash it every day!

nappyaddict · 26/02/2010 14:37

Granny23, BlueEyeshadow, solo, ShowOfHands, thislittlesisterlola, LouIsOnAHighwayToHell and any other once a weekers

Is your hair

Fine, medium or thick

Short, medium or long

Straight, wavy or curly

SarahMumtoAlex and BlueEyeshadow What are your DS' hair like?

Sekhmet · 26/02/2010 14:54

mine is straight, very long, and thickish (ppl say it is but I don't feel it is as it's not as thick as it once was)

QueenThistle · 26/02/2010 15:20

once/twice a week..

Is coloured though so don't want to make the bright blue fade quickly

Whoamireally · 26/02/2010 15:39

Is this really Discussion of the Day? Is there honestly nothing more important to talk about or is MN plumbing new Daily-Mail esque lows?

Whoamireally · 26/02/2010 15:39

(Sorry, OP!)

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 26/02/2010 15:44

I agree Falklands, or that new report on Girl Gangs would be better.
