How often do you wash your hair?

I was at the hairdressers today, as my colour was fading again.

She asked me how often I wash my hair and I said every other day and she said that's why my colour fades so quickly, and that she only washes her hair once a week

Her hair always looks fab though, whereas mine always looks greays and awful by the 3rd day. I won't leave the house at that point!

How often does everyone wash their hair??

Every other day mostly. I can push it another day sometimes. I don't colour so no problem there.

muggglewump · 25/02/2010 21:14

Every day or it looks hideous. It's really fine and looks greasy and also gets ridiculously static if not washed in the morning.

It takes two minutes to wash, and less than 10 to blow dry and straighten.

ShowOfHands · 25/02/2010 21:16

Once a week, if that.

Hair is in very good condition, never greasy or dry. Looks the same on day 7 as it does on day 1.

MeAndMyMonkey · 25/02/2010 21:19

Once a week, twice max. Thick dark hair, wavy, would dry out if I washed it any more -plus my hair takes hours to dry.Left to its own devices it would still be wet in the evening even if washed at 8am!
A good blow-dry at the hairdresser leaves it in good enough condition to last for a week.

solo · 25/02/2010 21:22

No less than every 7 days(unless I'm going out ~ yeah right!)and up to 2 weeks. I use a semi permanent colour but find it still fades quite fast.

My Mum used to wash hers daily until I told her that the longer she left it, the more used to not being washed every day it would get and now she's fine with once weekly.

hormonesnomore · 25/02/2010 21:23

I wash mine every other day. If I have my hair coloured by my hairdresser (easy but pricey), it fades in a week or so. If I colour it myself with permanent colour (pita but cheap), the colour lasts for months (apart from the roots obv.). I am sorely tempted to take some Nice & Easy from Superdrug to my hairdresser and ask her to use it.

SixtyFootDoll · 25/02/2010 21:24

Every two to three days

skinsl · 25/02/2010 21:29

every day, if I don't it looks dreadful, really greasy. and in the winter I would wash it again in the evening if I was going out.

MarionCole · 25/02/2010 21:53

It's not because of the greasiness that I have to wash it every day, my hair is incredibly fine and when I get out of bed it is sticking out in every direction. Washing it is the easiest way to tame it.

maxpower · 25/02/2010 21:58

twice a week but that's mainly because it's such a palaver (it's thick and wildly curly so I can't ever just wash and leave it)

BendyBob · 25/02/2010 22:02

Roughly every other day, but the 2nd day it never looks as good (fine and gets oily and flat).

I'm interested in that, like me, so many have to do this or hair gets greasy.

And yet this is quite a new thing isn't it? I don't think people used to wash their hair so much, ie in the 40's and 50's but they looked ok (I'm guessing on that, not being around then.)

I wonder if the washing it so much is actually making our hair greasy.

solo · 25/02/2010 22:18

That's what I said BendyBob just went around the houses to say it.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 25/02/2010 23:21

Solo I have tried leaving mine though and never been able to.

The only time I could leave it for 3, sometimes 4 days was when I was pregnant with DS. My skin became a lot drier then aswell but has got oilier again over the last 18 months.

zippy539 · 25/02/2010 23:28

Every other day because it is curly and goes weird and frizzy if I don't. Though after reading other posts wonder if I should just rinse and condition rather than washing - might make the colour last longer...

juneybean · 25/02/2010 23:32

Depends when I can be arsed, sometimes twice a week, sometimes more, usually wash my fringe every morning though (but not if I'm off work)

GeekyGirl · 25/02/2010 23:34

Every other day - hot flushes at night make it go like cardboard (dried sweat). Something for you all to look forward to.

solo · 25/02/2010 23:40

There is a product you can put in your hair after washing to prolong the colour...doesn't do much for mine though!

GemmaG88 · 25/02/2010 23:44

Everyday unless I know I'm not leaving the house!

LaDiDaDi · 25/02/2010 23:44

Daily or alternate daily at most.

dawntigga · 25/02/2010 23:45

Every day, it's red - which washes out v quickly. I use Aussie colour mate which is fab.

I don't know if it'd work Alibaba, but what if you withdrew daily washes over the period of say 6 months? go for two days for 4/5 weeks, then 3, 4 and so on and maybe stick at every 5 days? maybe worth a try until your scalp adjusts? I know it worked for my Mum, but I think she did it twice weekly, then to weekly.

MmmCoffee · 26/02/2010 00:04

Shower and condition every day, wash with anti-dandruff shampoo twice a week (but I put conditioner on the ends first and only shampoo the roots).

I have to wet it every day as it's curly and looks like a haystack when I wake up. If I don't have time to wet it through, I run damp fingers through it and tie it back.

Granny23 · 26/02/2010 00:12

I am quite amazed at how many of you younger folk only wash your hair once a week. I have always been a 'once a week' washer, sometimes twice if going somewhere special, but my DDs and younger workmates, were all adamant that hair had to be washed every morning. I have been home dyeing my hair, every six weeks since I was fifteen, never had trouble with fading colour and my hairdresser confirms that my hair is in wonderful condition. It is very thick and dead straight.

Glad that I am not the only 'once a week' washer, I had become ashamed that I was being a dirty midden and had started to lie if asked. Quick calculation gives 9000 hours of my life saved, not to mention the environmental benefits in terms of saved HOT water and hairdriers, tongs, etc.

mangoandlime · 26/02/2010 08:02

I have short dark brunette hair and wash it every day, sometimes I use Batiste dry shampoo if I'm having a lazy day. My sister has her long dark brunette hair washed and blow dried once a week and it always looks great, I'm not one who could go that long, sadly! Saying that, I like doing my hair so it's not a problem really.

doglover · 26/02/2010 09:50

I'm in my mid-forties and STILL wash my hair daily . I thought that it was something I'd 'grow out of', but am still waiting............. Find it a real pain and am very envious of all you once-a-weekers! . By the second day, my hair is really greasy, smelly and lank (disgusting, I know!) and it HAS to be washed. Would love to be able to reduce washing frequency.
