What's the oldest garment you still wear?

Sparked by a friend saying her dress was "pre-kids" - her oldest is 9!

I said I had nothing still going that was that old vintage.

Thinking about it I can offer a Laura Ashley belt which must be 10 yrs old, and a Racing Green scarf which I wear daily (in winter) - lovely red cashmere. It must be old as Racing Green no longer exists AFAIK - so let's say about 10 yrs too (I bought from there a lot before DS1 was born).

Otherwise my stuff always wears out/looks tatty/gets marks on it or ripped/doesn't fit or just looks out of date (hasten to add none of thse were true of my friend's dress!). I clear out anything I've not wron for 6mo.

What's your oldest garment still worn regularly?

Have just remembered something older that I own - a pair of leather gloves my dad gave me - he died 22 years ago so I've had them a while.

Mind you I suspect I keep them for sentimental reasons only - can't recall the last time I wore them. So they don't really count.

I have a coat that is 12 years old. It still looks new as it is not worn very often.

SerenityNowakaBleh · 25/02/2010 12:58

Ooh, I have a lot. I have a coat that my Mom bought soon after I was born, so it's about 25 28 years old, a pair of black leather gloves that she bought in 1969 , a gold clutch purse that I LOVE that my Granny got for my uncle's wedding in 1978, a green emerald green shift dress that my Granny made for my mother in the late 1960s. It's absolutely beautiful, and I can't wait to get rid of all this stupid excess weight so I can wear it again.

Eowyn · 25/02/2010 13:05

Several t shirts bought when I was 18ish, some nice 60's style dresses, now fashionable, worn in early 20's & only recently able to get into. Would have more if people didn't make me throw things away.

I'm now 41 (but put off having to type it).

My Welsh rugby shirt, which was a 17th birthday present, 20 years ago! I save it for match days now, but wore it loads as a teenager. It's more pink than red nowadays, but I wouldn't swap it for a new one - might jinx the team!

Fleecy · 25/02/2010 14:24

I have my mother's mini coat from the 60s - I wear it loads as it works over skinny jeans or mini-dresses and that's what I usually wear.

I have had it re-lined and never thought to choose a fab lining. I may opt for fuschia next time!

I also have a pair of white Converse that are 14 years old. They're a bit different to the regular ones and I've never seen any others like them. I'm not really a Converse person but they're cute summer shoes and I always get compliments on them.

And I have a pair of wedges that are also 14 years old. There have only been a few years that I haven't worn them.

Oh and I have a pair of shoes that look like [http://www.kurtgeiger.com/online-shop/158993-kurt-geiger-jada this] but in chocolate suede. I loved them when I bought them and have never had the heart to throw them away - now they're back in so I have brought them out for summer.

I have a T-shirt DH offered me when we had only just met. It is now (after 14 years) full of holes and completely shapeless but I absolutely love sleeping in it. I also was wearing it at the birth of all my Dcs and I cannot even imagine getting rid of it!

Jux · 25/02/2010 15:14

I have a beautiful black velvet dress from the 40s. I was first allowed to wear it when I was about 25 and have worn it for special occasions ever since. Can't believe I can still get into it!

I also have a few pairs of full length kid gloves of my grandmother's which I wear on occasion. Also a dress of hers which dates from sometime around 1915. She was much taller than me so I have to have very high heels for it!

MayorNaze · 25/02/2010 15:20

my bikini is 10 years old and i have worn it every summer

i also have a laura ashley smock top from the 70s that used to be my mum's, but made a cracking maternity top for me!

carciofi · 25/02/2010 15:25

I have a black DVF wrap dress that is 10 years old and still looks new.

Emster30 · 25/02/2010 16:09

I have a pair of jeans I got when I was 11 that I wear for painting in now. I also have a pair of shorts that I got for a summer camp thing when I was 12/13 in 1993 - they even have a nametape in them. They are only fit for summer painting.

I do have a dress my gran made in the 1960s, and a jumper of hers from possibly as late as the early 1980s, but probably older. Plus a thermal vest that was my aunt's at school in the 1970s and it has one of her nametapes in.

Shinyshoegirl · 25/02/2010 16:42

I'm still wearing a Jigsaw dress I got in 1992 and it always gets compliments. It's a shortish and simple jersey style which can be dressed up or down. I think it cost about £20 in a sale and even then it seemed like a bargain!

docpriya · 25/02/2010 17:16

I have a traditional Indian saree and a outfit from back when I was slim, svelte 52kg undergrad med student back in 1999.
I also have a pair of tiny gold, hand-crafted, ear-studs gifted by my nan which I wear almost everyday since 1987.
Does anybody keep old slim, jeans just as a motivator/inspiration/target for ur weight.. I do.. i have pair from 2005

MissWooWoo · 25/02/2010 17:18

(and perhaps a little ) at the ladies who can fit into the clothes they wore in their teens (tweens even)

LetThemEatCake · 25/02/2010 17:20

2 long sleeve tees by Bonds - one pink, the other, er, a different shade of pink - that my mum wore when I was a baby.

I'm 37.

MrsMeow · 25/02/2010 17:33

I have a pair of red tartan PJs that my mum bought me one xmas from C&A (remember them?!) I can't bear to get rid of them even though they only have one button and the bum is all shiny because they remind me of when DH and I were behaving inappropriately courting 13 ish years ago.

GalanthusNivalis · 25/02/2010 17:55

I have a number of Laura Ashley dresses that I bought in the mid eighties (sixth form and university) I still wear them occasionally. I also still regularly wear the M&S skirt I bought for my post uni job interviews in 1987! I can't believe how long ago that is.

Emster30 · 25/02/2010 19:01

misswoowoo I think they must have stretched! I did go through puberty quite early so was fairly much fully grown at 12. There were a number of years in my early 20s where they wouldn't have fitted as my weight crept up, but then I went down to a size 12 for my wedding.

I wore the jeans the other day to do some tiling but I'm currently 18 weeks pregnant so they didn't do up! I hope they fit again one day...

luciemule · 25/02/2010 19:10

Last week, after much consideration, I gave my beloved River Island, grey, lambswool, v-neck cardi to the air ambulance bag . I still feel as though I've been disloyal! I had it when I was 14 so that's 18 years ago!!!

cruelladepoppins · 25/02/2010 19:22

Victorian camisole and drawers.

monkeysmama · 25/02/2010 19:51

I have, and wear, the cardigan from Liberty that my parents gave to my nanny when she first visited me after my birth to say thank you for helping out. That was 33 years ago. I feel happy everytime I wear it.

Flame · 25/02/2010 19:53

A skirt I got in college, so that would be about 11-12 years.

Tis stretchy and covered in botticelli(ish) pictures. Sounds hideous, but I love it.

maryjane71 · 25/02/2010 20:07

I still wear the sarongs my brother brought back from Goa in 1988 - before it was a holiday resort - made by old women sitting cross legged in the street. They've worn really well

LibraryLil · 26/02/2010 17:16

I still have a green and white Pippa Dee blouse and some floaty Indian cotton summer dresses from the 70s (and a 60s minidress and boots that will probably never fit me again!

You've just reminded me though; somewhere in the attic in a suitcase is a dress that my Mum made for me when I was little, and I kept it for my own little girl, if I should have one, which I did. It's dark blue with white daisies around it; I must dig it out.
