What's the oldest garment you still wear?

Sparked by a friend saying her dress was "pre-kids" - her oldest is 9!

I said I had nothing still going that was that old vintage.

Thinking about it I can offer a Laura Ashley belt which must be 10 yrs old, and a Racing Green scarf which I wear daily (in winter) - lovely red cashmere. It must be old as Racing Green no longer exists AFAIK - so let's say about 10 yrs too (I bought from there a lot before DS1 was born).

Otherwise my stuff always wears out/looks tatty/gets marks on it or ripped/doesn't fit or just looks out of date (hasten to add none of thse were true of my friend's dress!). I clear out anything I've not wron for 6mo.

What's your oldest garment still worn regularly?

A Gap t-shirt I bought in America in 1998. It's still contemporary cos it's quite plain and although it's got a logo it's tiny. Think it was $10.

I was heartbroken to have to recently throw away a suede coat I bought second hand about 20 years ago. I'd worn it so much it fell to pieces - I'd had it relined and refurbished about 10 years ago too.

I have a very long black skirt with a drawstring waist. It makes me look thin, and I have worn it when 9 months pregnant through 3 pregnancies (1st child is nearly 10) and also when not pregnant. It always looks great.

I have gone off it a bit as I wore it for my Dad's funeral, but I have worn it to other funerals before that and that didn't "taint" it.

So it's over 10 years old but not sure how old. However, it is from Clockhouse at C&A ! When the fuck did they go bust?

Mine is a Gap white ribbed t shirt. I bought it when I was in my last job - which I left in November 2000.

My mum's fake fur coat. She died in 1988 and she'd had it for a few years before that so I reckon it's about 25 years old.

Have a crochet top my Granny made for me about 25 years ago.

Have loads of hippy dresses that I drag out every summer that I bought in charity shops in the early 90's.

Tshirts I wear cycling to work week in week out are all about 8/10 years old I reckon and my fleece cycling jacket is about 10 years old too as are my boots.

I do have lots of new clothes honest.....Its jsut I prefer the old ones.

I turned forty this week and I still regularly wear Norman, the jumper which I was told off for wearing in sixth form science lessons because he has a huge knitted griffin on the back in contravention of uniform policy.

Norman is pure acrylic from Pamplemousse Top Shop and very very baggy in an eighties stylee, which is why he hasn't become too shapeless to wear.

Apart from that I'd say that the vast majority of my day to day work clothes, and even a lot of my work shoes, date from before I had dd (7.6 yrs). I'm at the people who have nothing over a handful of years old (although I am very old, and I wear suits to work, which don't date).

A really ancient jumbo cord aubgergine coat from Esprit. It's huge and has massive buttons and I love it. The lining has gone so you can't put anything in the pockets and I once tried to throw it out but couldn't go through with it. It's mainly used for going for cold walks and watching the carnival as you can wear layers under it.

I have a pair of PJ bottoms that I've had since I was 9 years old. I am now 25-years-old!

My DH was when I told him how long I'd had them for! Lol!

They used to be knee length PJ shorts, now they are considerably shorter, but they still fit so I still wear them.

I have a 1950 velvet 'opera' coat - - which is hilarious given how my mum had no money at all. She was given it by a woman she cleaned for.
I also have a dress I bought in Covent Garden in 1986 for the opening of the Lloyds building. Funnily enough it is a slit neck shift in velvet with big sleeves and it would fit in any current colections
It is a little bit like this but shorter

A long, chunky cotton cardigan bought in Warehouse in approximately 1992 and a woollen jacket-y type one from French Connection bought in around '95. I don't wear them that often but would never throw them away.

I miss Racing Green too!

but you have to factor in that it is not lovely model but large arsed , saggy faced me

My DD is going to get loads of lovely stuff eventually. I can afford nice stuff now but too old to look gorgeous [grumpy]. I have reached the age where the only compliments you get are that you don't look your age

( I am keeping my posh shoes though. I am being buried in those )

I was thinking about this the other day. I have loads of classic and beautiful clothes that I've had for over 20 years that I'm keeping for Dd...got a long time to wait, but I'm hoping she'll love them as much as I do, cos there's no way on earth I'll ever wear them again

I have a long sleeve black t shirt by "northern shirts" that my dp bought for me circa 2002, it gets reeled out when I have nothing else to wear I'm feeling nostalgic

I have a suitcase full of lovely clothes from around that time but am too fat sophisticated to wear them now

My winter coat is my Mum's old Maxi coat. It's about 40 years old (older than me!) and I love it.
Unfortunately, I really need to find out about getting it re-lined, as the lining is falling apart.

FairyLights
any decent tailor will do that for you. It could be fun - you could choose a beautiful new lining to change it a bit but keep it the same IYSWIM

Can't believe the number of people for whom 4 years or 7 years is the oldest thing you have! You would be horrified by my wardrobe. An example which is currently in regular use is a Mossimo T shirt I bought in 1991. I honestly still wear this a lot. At the time I bought it it was sort of a grunge look thing - you know like Seattle bands wearing T shirts over the top of long sleeved tops.{hmm] It's 19 years old, but you know, if I have another think I'm sure I can even beat that.

I have a knee length Mexx skirt, lovely, 12 years old, can be machine washed, non-iron, very flattering and people still comment on how nice it is. looks great with boots and tights, also with flipflops. Can be smart or casual. I LOVE it still.

I also have a silk knee length REISS skirt from 9 years ago, which still fits (also machine wash, it´s a thick glossy silk though a bit faded now). It cost 80 pounds at the time, but glad I bought it!

Still, quality clothes, that can be machine washed, and never loose shape are quite rare really, aren´t they?

Jeez I have loads of really old clothes - in fact, things that are less than 5 years old I think of as "new". I'm not poor or a rabid envirohead either. Just not a big shopper!!

I have two t-shirts still that I bought when I was at school. I left school in 1992.
