What's the oldest garment you still wear?

Sparked by a friend saying her dress was "pre-kids" - her oldest is 9!

I said I had nothing still going that was that old vintage.

Thinking about it I can offer a Laura Ashley belt which must be 10 yrs old, and a Racing Green scarf which I wear daily (in winter) - lovely red cashmere. It must be old as Racing Green no longer exists AFAIK - so let's say about 10 yrs too (I bought from there a lot before DS1 was born).

Otherwise my stuff always wears out/looks tatty/gets marks on it or ripped/doesn't fit or just looks out of date (hasten to add none of thse were true of my friend's dress!). I clear out anything I've not wron for 6mo.

What's your oldest garment still worn regularly?

I have a sparkley top that my mum brought in the early 60's, I have worn it and been asked where I got it as a copuple of people wanted one..

As for my own clothes I have a couple of silk shirts that were dated when a friends put piccys on fb of me wearing them - they are not fashions clothes though so don't date and I can keep wearing them....

Ooh, I could have a bright red lining as it's a black military style coat! I'll have to start researching

Those who are shocked at my cleared-out wardrobe I am honestly impressed if you still wear old stuff. I think lovely hand-ons from mum/gran etc are a bit different.

I guess I would wear older stuff too except that if it's nice and fits then I wear it until it falls to bits (eg trousers always go at knees); if it's not nice then why keep it? The other thing is that my size changes frequently, or has in the last 11 yrs (3 children are one reason!) and so things no longer fit - and years of being fat has taught me there's no point keeping them.

I just don't have a lot of clothes; and certainly have no space to keep stuff that's not worn. When I buy sthg new (eg a new top) I get rid of one I no longer treasure or wear - otherwise would run out of space.

I've got quite a few Laura Ashley bits and pieces form 10 years ago when I worked for them. That was the last time I got any good quality stuff and that was because it was 'uniform' stuff, so free basically!
My winter coat is 12 years old and from Wallis. It has come back into style now.

mumzy · 24/02/2010 19:32

I still wear a green jersey dress from Miss Selfridges I bought with my grant money in the first term of university in 1987. I have a suit from St Michaels circa 1975 (old M&S) which is a size 14 and a perfect fit. Nowadays I'm a 12/10 in M&S is it size deflation!!

mrstimlovejoy · 24/02/2010 19:32

mrstimlovejoy · 24/02/2010 19:32

maryjane71 · 24/02/2010 21:26

I have 3 really old items. A St. Michael nightie from Mark's bought around 1984, a Michael Jackson 1988 tour t-shirt - never worn. And a snake belt I've had for about 34 years, fab for wearing with jeans that gape at the back. I'm 38

nomorecake · 24/02/2010 23:55

maryjane - i too have a st michaels nightie, had it about 20 years. i'm 32. oldest item that i still wear.
i have a whitney concert t-shirt from the 80's, it was like a dress on me. now, i dont think it would fit over my head!!!

Lubyloo · 25/02/2010 00:20

I have a GAP t-shirt bought in 1991 that I still wear loads and still looks great.

BooHooMonkey · 25/02/2010 00:29

I have a pair of shoes I bought for £10 in the faith sale which are still the only heels I can walk in...15 years on!

piprabbit · 25/02/2010 00:37

I have a coat from approx. 1971/2.
Obviously I've long since outgrown it (I was roughly 2yo at the time), but DD wore it when she was little and DS has been wearing it this winter.

OsbegaEthewulf · 25/02/2010 09:13

Pashmina type huge scarf I got in 1981

10 year old t shirts

pig skin gloves from 1984

blue crystal drop earrings I bought in 1979

Frazzledoldhag- your carriage coat et al sounds wonderful. We need to see photos of it all please

Clary · 25/02/2010 09:59

frazzled that sounds sooo wonderful.

Am very impressed with yr St Petersburg ancestry

Those of you who are quoting things you once wore that DC now wear - no! It has to be something you have had for years that you still wear!

I notice that a lot of these are accessories (like mine) which generally neither wear out nor stop fitting (I do lose them tho). Impressed with T-shirts still being worn.

What am I doing wrong? I do only have about six outfits (ie 6 decent tops, 4 cardis, two skirts for each season, one trousers and one jeans) that I rotate thru the week. Maybe they all get too much wear!

I have a really beautiful bright red tweed coat that I bought in about 1987 - still going strong and I have worn it most years since then. I don't think it will ever go out of fashion. I think that's the oldest thing I wear all the time, but I have tons of things that are more than five years old that I wear quite often - leather jacket, several fake fur coats, suede miniskirt, lots of pairs of boots and shoes, a few evening dresses and a couple of skirts.

upahill · 25/02/2010 10:19

My leather biker jacket from Hein Gerike (Bike Shop ) is about 9 years old now and gets worn several times a week and I love it. Wear it to gigs, pictures, theatre, meals out. It's not going to wear out and still looks trendy and never out of place. Best buy EVER!!!!
