Do you wear make up every day and if not, why not?

Can't get my head around why so many bright, lovely women don't use a bit of slap and would rather face the world with grey, pale, or sun-spotted complexions when 5 minutes with a bit of slap would transform them.

Don't we want to look as good as we can all of the time for as long as we can?

(And don't say you haven't time- I can do full war paint in just over 5 minutes.!)

Op you asked for reasons why people don't wear makeup and you've had a variety of replies. Is that not good enough? You seem to feel that you are right somehow where the non makeup wearers are wrong.

Even if we all accept that everyone looks better with a little makeup, us non makeup wearers are saying that we genuinely don't mind not looking at our best all the time. I never really think about it, tbh. I hardly notice if other people are wearing makeup or not - the only time I do is when it is caked on and that looks just plain hideous!

I don't wear make-up every day, for several reasons. I go to the gym 3 times a week, so would sweat it off there. I go to karate twice a week, so would sweat it off there (if I haven't already wiped it all over my nice white gi). No-one actually cares about whether I have make-up on. (Well they haven't said it to my (unmade-up) face anyway). I have a bad tendency to rub my eyes vigorously, leading to panda eyes which I am totally oblivious to.

BUT, I do tend to wear it on days when I'm going clothes shopping. For some reason it makes me feel more 'together' and less likely to keep buying slobby clothes. And recently I've worn a little concealer as I've developed spots.

I do wear it to go out for a night out, but what feels to me like a ton of slap apparently is 'barely there' according to others so I'm plainly not overdoing it.

gorionine · 08/02/2010 11:19

I have a friend who was in hospital (had just given birth to twins). When her Dh came to visit her the first time, he brought her make up case and told her she "did not look so good without" If I was not worried of getting cramps in my fingers, I would add a couple of pages of them!

MrsFlyingKebab · 08/02/2010 11:19

Don't feel dressed without putting at least mascara on, whether i go out or not. Its the perils of being fair haired. My eyelashes are almost invisible, and if I don't put something on them I have piggy eyes which I hate. Have done this since i was about 14 so its deeply entrenched in my psyche!!Thank God my blond haired daughter has beautiful dark long doe eye eyelashes

If I go out or its a special occaision I'll do the lot but don't cake it on. My skin is too spot prone and it will make me pay!!!

I definitely think todays young whippersnappers pile it on too much though. Must cost a fortune!!

Dumbledoresgirl · 08/02/2010 11:21

PP, I did not mean to offend you by describing full warpaint as lurid. I only meant the term "warpaint" suggests lurid makeup to me. What you describe yourself wearing sounds a lot more subtle.

I don't know whether make up would do anything for my appearance or not. I only know it would make me feel like a 4 year old child looks when she has got into her mother's make up bag behind her back.

Oh and as for SPF - haven't you ladies heard about the return rickets has made to our society because everyone is plastering sunblock on their skin and no-one is getting enough vit D? Go out today with a bare face and improve your health!

Bumblingbovine · 08/02/2010 11:21

It is precisly because I like ME that I don't wear make-up much. Make-up for me is abit of fun for the odd night out. It is a sort of mask or cover. I am perfectly happy with the real me without make-up so most of the time the extra 5-10mins isn't worth it to me.

Rhubarb · 08/02/2010 11:24

Ah so pp was the OP was she? Why start a thread asking for peoples opinions if you're just going to demand that you are right?

Surely women should be allowed to do what they want without some prissy madam like you telling them they look shit - hardly a feminist are you? Freedom of choice dear and what looks shit to you looks beautiful to someone else.

Dumbledoresgirl · 08/02/2010 11:26

and vice versa Rhubarb!

(I am with you, btw, in case my point is not understood).

ShauntheSheep · 08/02/2010 11:26

I dont own any makeup either and havent worn any for years (since I gave up on the goth look). Work in an office with 3 people the same age as me and none of them wear any either. I really dont care what people think about my looks as I think I look ok. Dp also thinks I look good without makeup not that he actually gets any choice in teh matter .

onlyjoinedforoffers · 08/02/2010 11:27

i couldnt leave the house without mascara i put on a little foundation of my cheeks and chin and some vaseline on my lips. Occasionaly lipstick i Riven you are 41 and dont have wrinkles i have had wrinkles round my eyes since i was 30

Rhubarb · 08/02/2010 11:28

Quite right Dumbledore! Like I said I would never criticise a woman for wearing make-up either, if she feels comfortable with that then brilliant.

I've seen teens with bright orange faces too, but they've obv looked in the mirror and thought they looked great. Haven't we all made some faux pas when we were younger? I wouldn't have it any other way, so smile nicely at them and let them be.

OP - live and let live.

RockbirdandHerSpork · 08/02/2010 11:30

Actually, thinking about it, out of the 8 or so women in my office, ranging from 56 to mid 20s, only one of them (excluding me) wears make up and that is the 56 year old. Everyone else is au naturel. Never even thought about it.

SarahMumtoAlex · 08/02/2010 11:31

Purplepeony, do you think that men look better in makeup and if not why not? I sometimes wear makeup as a form of 'dressup' pretending to be someone else, as a mark of respect for someone (eg at a job interview) or to make myself more visible (when speaking in public) I don't think it makes me look better and this is not because I don't know how - I just prefer the look of my face - just as I prefer the look of my husband's face. How you can think that what looks nice is a matter of fact rather than opinion is a mystery to me.

purplepeony · 08/02/2010 11:35

some prissy madam like you

tut tut *Rhubarb- mind your language- no personal attacks please- I haven't so why do you need to?

I am amazed by this thread. I love make up and wear it every day but I do not cake it on, nor do I look like a clown or have bad skin

I think a certain amount of make up makes you look more groomed and certainly evens out skintone whether you have decent skin or not. It is personal choice, of course.

But I wear make up every day even if I am not going out or seeing anyone - it is part of my routine. (And before you ask - I am neither insecure or unattractive

Furthermore, when I gave birth to my daughter (cs) I had on a dot of concealer and some waterproof mascara, which was just as well as my DP was taking photos like there was no tomorrow and theatre lights are rather harsh, donchernow

I like the way I look, so I don't waer make up
Personally, I think women who won't go out witthout their slap on are quite tweee and filled with self loathing

MillyR · 08/02/2010 11:40

I do wonder why men don't wear any makeup. If I was a man, I would still at the very least wear primer, concealer and curl my eyelashes.

I do think a lot of men look really awful. Why can't they get a decent haircut and at least look as if they have washed and moisturised properly?

tinierclanger · 08/02/2010 11:42

I don't wear it every day, because it takes time, which I don't really have, and I think I look ok without it. So I wear it for work, and when I go out, and sometimes at the weekends. And yes I do think I look a bit more groomed and nicer in that way with it on, but ok without too!

And FWIW, I USED to wear it every day, and wouldn't dream of going out without mascara, lippy etc. And I did have a lot more issues with my appearance back them. I'm very happy that I'm now comfortable enough in my own skin to not feel obliged to wear it.

And I see women with makeup on a lot who look overdone, and women without makeup who look lovely, and women with makeup who look lovely, and women without who probably would look a bit better with it on - but honestly, what's the big deal?! You really need to get more important things to think about than assessing everyone else's skin all the time.

chickensaresafehere · 08/02/2010 11:44

Have not got the time or energy for make-up,plus I wear glasses & think I look better without it,but good for you if you can be bothered!!

wubblybubbly · 08/02/2010 11:45

Usually, but not everyday. Today, for example, DS is poorly, chucking up everywhere last night but at 10.30 he announces he wants a ham sandwich. So it's a quick trip to the shops au natural.

I know I look better with a bit of mascara, blusher and lip gloss, but I didn't cause too much of a disturbance going without.

Rhubarb · 08/02/2010 11:45

No peony, you just started a thread criticising those who don't wear make-up, implying that they are young ignorant mums with grey complexions.

I'm surprised you have time to put make-up on with all that judging you have to do!

passionberry · 08/02/2010 11:47

OMG I am definately going to have my make up bag with me when I give birth!!

I agree with LadyThompson, I have good skin but a bit of foundation (in the right shade) evens out skin tone.

I can leave the house without it but I feel so much better with some on.

chocolaterabbit · 08/02/2010 11:50

I wear makeup when I wear lenses but I hate hate wearing lenses every day so usually wear glasses. I find with glasses that mascara rubs off onto the glasses and I always feel a bit messy with makeup on so would only wear it as warpaint - i.e. on days when I was in court or with a difficult meeting.

My skin is generally pretty good (I'm pale blonde but with a bit of colour in cheeks, grey eyes and darker eyelashes and brows) but I probably would soon benefit from wearing makeup a bit more but will also probably get my eyes lasered at some point so that will make it easier.
