I don't really like blue denim in school, for no real reason. But I am not formal - I wore treggings to teach in today!

pointysaysrelax · 19/01/2010 20:15

I like to wear purdy colours and bracelets. That shows professionalism to me.

I am tip top professional, me. Oh yes.

Wastwinsetandpearls · 19/01/2010 20:22

I know you don't need to wear a suit to be a professional, today I wore a wrap dress and was rather fabulous.

However it is about sending a message to young people who see things in quite black and white terms.

I also find that being smart gives me a mental lift.

I used to teach in a school which did not really have a dress code for the staff and it always felt slovenly and half hearted and I think the way staff looked added to that.

I also find that it is useful for teachers to have a tag - if that makes sense. Something that sets them apart from everyone else, for me it is the way I dress. Big statement jewellery, coloured tights, dresses usually and heels. It is much harder for men.

I am also a big believer in dressing for the job you want to have rather than the job you have.

badgermonkey · 19/01/2010 20:22

I would wear jeans if anyone else did but it would look like I was making a stand so I just smuggle black skinnies under long tops and brazen it out. I haven't worn a suit since my PGCE and yet have managed to pass threshhold so I suppose I must be at least a little bit professional!

Wastwinsetandpearls · 19/01/2010 20:23

I do wear flip flops in the summer, my classroom gets very hot.

I do get ticked off for taking a cup of coffee in with me while I teach.

FredAboutAFred · 19/01/2010 20:23

The young art teachers these days are amazing. Damn scary looking too.

Wastwinsetandpearls · 19/01/2010 20:26

I don't do interesting knit, but I have fallen into the trap of a statement scarf. How did that happen?

I was told today that I am undermining my professionality by sitting on a table and slurping my coffee while watching my year 7s writing an essay.

pointysaysrelax · 19/01/2010 20:26

The kids always seem to like the way I dress, although I was a bit peeved that my fab Vivienne Westwood skirt was greeted with "Miss, are you wearing a KILT?"

Fred
I am good at number one.
Have done number two and was quite good at that as well. Not at my present school though, all married or women.

They can be quite cutting, don;t go into teaching if you have self esteem issues.

I was greeted once by some girls looking me up and down in the way that only 15 year old orange girls can. They then said
"You think you look good in that Miss don't you?" and then gave me the same smile that one may give to a child as they cross the finish line miles after everyone else.

Wastwinsetandpearls · 19/01/2010 20:33

We have a crew of male teachers who all do short sleeved shirts no matter what the weather.

All our geography teachers wear checked shirts, even the female one.

FredAboutAFred · 19/01/2010 20:35

oh mine rarely comment. i am that thrilling.
