Wouldn't be allowed at our place. A shame as I have a fab denim pencil skirt, which actually looks really smart. Men have to wear jackets and ties whilst women get away with a bit more but absolutely no denim.

Lucycat · 19/01/2010 19:24

Not smart enough for our place - no denim at all (unless you teach 'performing arts' in which case flip flops and a vest top seems ok )

Openbook · 19/01/2010 19:26

Love it Cyb - I'm giggling!

Batteryhuman · 19/01/2010 19:27

So is there a different dress code for primary and secondary or state and private?

Said denim skirt would not be particularly out of place at either the state primary or secondary my DSs go to.

CaptainNancy · 19/01/2010 19:27

Teachers should not wear denim in the workplace- denim isn't professional, it's workwear (ie manual work).

What teachers wear in their own time is entirely their own choice though

We would not allow it.

MrsMattie · 19/01/2010 19:31

The teachers at my school always had their tits flopping out of some floaty top or another...

FredAboutAFred · 19/01/2010 19:32

do you think it affects the teaching
all htis pettiness really gets my goat
i think it all goes back to a VERY trad education myself all based on being a 500 year old girls school craopla

well i wore city shorts last year but with ballet flats and smart top - the kids didn't notice - but the men were envious of the shorts as they ahve to wear ties all year round.

but no denim - at all.

old school (no uniform for kids) = very casual, jeans were fine and slogan t-shirts, teh works.

new school (proper uniform for kids)= denim skirts def a no-no

Lucycat · 19/01/2010 19:34

No it doesn't affect the teaching - its worse if the kids are in non uniform - it affects their brains and they turn into well...teenagers

Wastwinsetandpearls · 19/01/2010 19:35

We have very strict uniform rules for our pupils and guidelines that are enforced for sixth form, so we set the example.

We also try to present ourselves as professionals doing an important job so dress the part.

I tend to wear dresses or suits to work.

traceybath · 19/01/2010 19:35

It wouldn't bother me personally but I suspect its just easier to say 'no denim' rather than go into permutations of what is and isn't acceptable.

I mean some people can look utter scruffs in a suit.

That skirt probably looked fine with tights/boots/nice top etc but equally it could have looked very very casual.

I suppose it depends on the school though - DS was in uniform from 3 in the nursery class so teachers tend to be smart too.

Ok to wear a denim skirt..

That skirt in the link is v dull inoffensive anyway. How could you have an opinion either way about that skirt?

Now elbow patches are another thing. Big teacher fashion faux pas in my day, was that. Not so much now I suspect; especially among women teachers Obviously I went to school in 1863 as you can tell.

hana · 19/01/2010 19:38

how ridiculous to dictate no demin skirts in a school. terribly authoritarian.

that white stuff skirt is awful - too much material and not a great cut (bought it online and returned it!)

Lucycat · 19/01/2010 19:47

Well quite! especially as you consider how unprofessional we all are for not going into school during the 'snow-days' - but we can wear denim skirts as that would be authoritarian of the schools to dictate work wear.

MN is a very strange place sometimes.

Lucycat · 19/01/2010 19:56

can't ahem wear denim skirts

OmicronPersei8 · 19/01/2010 20:04

It depends on the school - I've taught in ones where it's all smart trousers and tops, others where all the teachers wear jeans and trainers (no uniform for the kids either, and trainers were near enough compulsory due to amazing adventure playground). The teachers were very professional and looked smart, but not suit-smart (no ties for the men etc). I used to wear a denim skirt with boots.

pointysaysrelax · 19/01/2010 20:05

nay.

I am a formalist in teh workplace. So no denim.

I love getting older and becoming all conservative and reactionary.
