Boys in dresses. Yes or no?

My DS (3.5) loves dresses and butterfly tops and glittery sparkley fairy type stuff. I have no objection. I even bought him a couple of dresses of his own to stop him raiding long-sufferine DD's wardrobe. My only slight worry is teasing from other kids. He wants to wear a dress to pre-school today. What do you think?

haven't read this whole thread, but my DD2 won't wear dresses or skirts at all, she even wanted to wear her tracksuit bottoms and football top to the wedding on saturday Should I force her into dresses????

Blu · 30/06/2005 15:42

Meiouw - Force her into dresses? No, she'd look like a boy!

sparklymieow · 30/06/2005 15:44

she actually says, when you ask if she is a boy or girl, that she is a boy!!! But its the way she is????

sparklymieow · 30/06/2005 15:46

there is a boy at DS's school (a few years younger) who used to come to the school to pick up his sister with his mum who wore dresses, skirts, pink tops, now he is at school he wears school uniform, and he wears the boys version!!!

Blu · 30/06/2005 15:47

I was a complete 'tomboy' - hated wearing dresses, wanted to be a boy, didn't play with dolls, always climbed trees, was bribed with promises and threats to wear dresses at weddings. Don't let it go on: she might end up like me
Seriously - support her. But explain that you have to wear certain things at weddings because it is good manners, and that is that. Nice trouser outfit?

tarantula · 30/06/2005 15:47

No dont think you should force a girl into dresses if they dont want to wear them but kids do need to learn taht there are occasions when they need to look smart too and it doesnt have to invovle dresses thankfully as I generally end up in trousers.

I tried the trouser suit thing with her on saturday, we had 3 hours of screaming, in the end she wore pink trousers and a pink top.

sparklymieow · 30/06/2005 15:50

she is 3 btw!!

tarantula · 30/06/2005 15:52

OMG is this what I have to come SM? dd is only 17 mnths and hates dresses already. Better prepare for the tantrums now

sparklymieow · 30/06/2005 15:54

It was a nightmare, we tried lots of different suits and she refused every one, we managed to get a skirt and top on her (the same as her sister) and she took it straight back off and screamed 'don't like dresses!!!!!!!!'

spidermama · 30/06/2005 15:59

I picked up Spiderboy, still in his skirt by choice and walked him home, via primary playground to pick up siblings, with no apparent comment or neg attitude from anyone under 10. A couple of funny looks from parents. He played with gorgeous, non-judgemental 3 year old pals all the way. This debate would go completely over their heads thank goodness. Sorry it has got so heated. Everyone's coming from the same place in that we want to protect these lovely young innocent creatures. For me though, I don't think pandering to predjudice is the best way to do it.

Good for you spidey

Blu · 30/06/2005 16:21

Excellent!
he sounds a top lad.

And it was parents, not kids, giving the looks?

aloha · 30/06/2005 16:47

well, I'd only let ds wear a dress if he could wear a co-ordinating tank top with it.

Blu · 30/06/2005 16:51

LOL

Fio2 · 30/06/2005 16:52

my husband is partial to a bit of cross dressing but his mother never let him wear frilly pants

Blu · 30/06/2005 16:53

Do you , Fio? (let him)

Fio2 · 30/06/2005 16:55
