was thinking t'other day how past 10 years mainly characterised by fashion revivals. But then started to mull over some of the original howlers the noughties have served us..

ok from start:-

big squares of horrid coloured belly dancer scarf.. mostly folded over and tied round the waist of fat arsed women in misguided belief that it was a clever masking technique

mules with clear perspex top - again usually embellished with some ribbon or jewels

Gypsy tops worn off the shoulder by women with crepe paper cleavages

Those jeans that looked like they'd been sprayed with glitter

herjazz · 13/11/2009 15:14

basques as going oot tops. Never has an item of clothing made me look more like a tube

that v v fine, delicate knitted stuff - usually some sort of bolero / cropped cardi. Pulls and bobbles the minute you handle it

waistcoats

city shorts - they've been mentioned already haven't they but yeah - not chic or smart. Shorts are for hot days NOT at work. Wear a skirt otherwise

showing off at being 7 stone

Fleeces
Brown medium heel sensible boots for work
Grown women in baby pink anything
Straightened hair
Flicky lulu hair
knitted boots

I live in skinnies and ballet pumps though

poppysweetie · 13/11/2009 15:34

Those belts with the discs! Urrgggh!
And people that wear a bikin top under a halterneck.....clever disguising trick - not! Get a strapless bra!

Marioandluigi · 13/11/2009 15:41

Those hair clips you can buy that have an extra pony tail to make you look like your hair is longer - actually it makes you loom like you are wearinga peace of cheap, fake hair!

herjazz · 13/11/2009 15:44

have just remember the worst thing shurely

although it might have been more late 90's..

them boots that were like socks - supposedly, stretchy fitted fabric boots. Rubber sole. God they were shit. Also had a sniff of nora batty about em as well cos they'd wrinkle down

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 13/11/2009 15:46

Did the teenagers in anyone else's town go through a stage of wearing armsocks? Like thin legwarmers, buton the arm?

soopermum1 · 13/11/2009 15:55

teenage swept across fringe like lucie from the X factor before the show's stylists got their hands on her

peep toe boots, i wear boots to keep my toes dry and warm

uggs- plain ugly

anything batwing, it's not ironic, it's grim

straightened hair

the return of shoulder pads, they were horrid first time round as my teenage photos clearly show

noddyholder · 13/11/2009 16:10

The sweepy hair on boys is worth my ds's friends can look like a cross between arthur scargill and donald trump!

LaTrucha · 13/11/2009 16:18

Every single one of those baggy tops in either drab or block, bright colours that reach mid thigh for which you have to buy another top to go over or under. And a belt, probably.

They're everywhere and have been for the last few years, especially in New Look.

Two tone hair.

LaTrucha · 13/11/2009 16:19

Also hate fake-shirt-under-jumper tops.

EightiesChick · 13/11/2009 16:31

The skirt-trouser is easily the most hideous and pointless for me (has been mentioned) - though I can't be 100% sure it wasn't a late 90s thing to begin with. But...

2nd, its heir - dresses worn with jeans underneath. What is the point? Just wear whichever one is more weather- and occasion-appropriate! It doesn't make your jeans more dressy or your dress more casual; it just means there are extra layers of stuff bunched round your middle - uncomfortable and unflattering, great!

Agree on the black polyester mix work trousers, though when pregnant I was held to ransom on this as I couldn't find any maternity trousers that weren't at least 50% polyester. A clear campaign of cruelty to pregnant women, I'd say.

boodleboot · 13/11/2009 16:48

uuurrgh. Glitter Dip dye jeans.

to the floor gypsy skirts......just foul.

MBT's.....too damn heavy to be bothered to walk in....

tinkisthrillerthrillernight · 13/11/2009 16:48

hate :-

crocs yuk bought some so uncomfy and look horrid!!
hoof boots ugg
plastic bra straps

Tigresswoods · 13/11/2009 16:58

Hello. Ponchos!?!?!?

WTF?

tulpe · 13/11/2009 17:00

La Trucha - I so agree with the "fake shirt beneath jumper" item. Is layering really so hard to do??

Often coupled with either black polyester trousers or those vile glitter dip jeans......bootcut of course.

Tis, for me, the epitome of Woman At Next.

TheCrackFox · 13/11/2009 17:02

Hair extensions - utterly revolting. Unless you have alopecia (sp) just grow your hair long.

Cropped tops - put your stomach away love, I really don't want to see it.

tulpe · 13/11/2009 17:02

Tigresswoods - can only agree with ponchos if they are horrid, crackly acrylic version.

I wore my gorgeous cashmere poncho yesterday for the first time in ages, layered over polo-neck and jeans and felt v chic......and hopefully not like hideous fash faux pas of hideous proportions

cocobongo · 13/11/2009 17:12

I know it's really an early 90s thing originally, but I am somewhat distressed at the return of the "body" as a fashion item. Particularly classy when someone has forgotten to redo the poppers after visiting the loo, thus making a tail.

mummyhill · 13/11/2009 17:16

What is so good about wearing pyjama trousers to go shopping?

goodnightmoon · 13/11/2009 17:17

i think mine are all taken already

the boho look (though I am having a horrid flashback of actually buying one of those giant disc belts for about 3 quid, though NEVER worn with a gypsy skirt.)

peeptoe boots.

gladiator sandals

hideous "it" shoes.

Shoulderpads or otherwise overdone shoulders.

cropped tops

cropped jean shorts up the vigi

maxi dresses

virtually anything with cleavage

hideous parkas

those army type trousers with tons of pockets and drawstrings

but i still love skinny jeans - so practical

goodnightmoon · 13/11/2009 17:18

oh, and UGHS
