  1. Dying your hair a matte brown or black. So ageing and unattractive especially when also sporting bed flattened crown at which white roots are visible.
  1. Long skirt, jaunty jerkin and medium helled boot ensemble (this particular species' natural habitat is M&S).
  1. Not getting your teeth scaled and polished on a regular basis.
  1. Wearing too many gold rings at once.

Oh and please stop dragging your sheepish looking dhs with you around the lingerie dept. Haven't they got shelves ot put up or lawns to mow?

Middle age came as quite a relief to me, really (I am 43). I no longer need to aspire to showing off bits of flesh that were never really up to the exposure, so my body self-confidence has shot up. And having felt self-conscious about being small-breasted as a teenager, I now sigh with relief at having normal sized breasts that fit fashionable clothes whereas my formerly better endowed contemporaries have swollen to unmanageable and barely dressable proportions

Bonsoir · 13/11/2009 13:48

Boden would be totally unwearable where I live.

ruddynorah · 13/11/2009 13:48

34?! good grief! so i have 5 years til i hit middle age?!

TuttiFrutti · 13/11/2009 14:03

Where do you live Bonsoir?

Am loving this thread. Picking up lots of tips for my winter wardrobe.

Malificence · 13/11/2009 14:04

I've got crocs ( proper ones) It's because I'm a DIBB-er and it's the LAW on there. I had them years before they became chav-wear.

I have several fleeces too.
Proper outdoor stylee ones though, for serious outdoorsy stuff.

I also have several jaunty scarves I bought in Cairo, dahlinnng, for " mere pennies".

Our DD keeps saying that her dad is far too old to wear Abercrombie /Hollister/Aeropostale stuff, I'd be wearing it too if "large" was any bigger than a size 12!!!!!

I wear what suits me and don't give a stuff.

I don't think you can define middle age lljkk with regard to fashion. Some 40 yr olds look ancient, others nearing 60 or older look great- think Lulu, Twiggy, Felicity Kendal, Irman, Sandra Howard, etc etc.

Unless of course you mean in terms of life-expectancy. Then 40 is about right.

Every age group makes faux pas- from teenagers showing their muffin tops over their low rise jeans, to women of any age not covering up droppy tits , showing off flabby arms- age is not really the issue, it's what kind of shape you are in.

To be honest, I think the biggest agers are being overweight- nothing looks good really if you are carrying 2 stones too much- and having bad teeth ( stained or dark) and bad hair.
Bad hair equals all-over dyed helmet, too much bleach, dark roots, spikey short with gel, scappy hair that needs a cut, and grey ahir- sorry ladies I know this has been done to death, but very very few women can get away with grey hair- it has to be in great condition, beautifully cut, and an even colour- not salt and pepper or dark and light grey.

I think my pet hates are:
pearly lipsticks and yellowy teeth
blue eye shadow
elasticated waist trousers or trousers with pleats at waistband
calf length floral or patterned skirts
the wrong kind of shoes with the outfit- i.e. navy low heeled court shoes that go ( or rather don't) with everything.

lou33 · 13/11/2009 14:24

Thats ok I am no longer middles age - Iam way past 35

purplepeony · 13/11/2009 14:26

Bonsoir do tell more about Boden- could one not get away with the cropped cashmere cardi ( she hopes) or the straight legged jeans, or a slim pencil skirt in Paris?

WilfSell · 13/11/2009 14:28

Some of us are too pale and Celtic of complexion NOT to wear brown, and lots of other vomitous autumn colours sadly.

I would like 'colours' advice for autumns with a touch of spring that is not vomitous please. It is VERY hard, all the autumn colours are SHITE.

Vis:

brown
orange
lime green
peach
beige
tan
aubergine
russet
tomato red

puke puke puke

So what do we do? In everything else we look dead.

Bonsoir · 13/11/2009 14:31

purplepeony - Boden is just all wrong here. Of course, you might be able to isolate one item here or there and get away with it, but it isn't nearly glamorous or elegant or youthful enough for round here...

Jajas - I looked at the tights on Toast after you had raved about them (and I was feeling ill at having spent far too many euros on Marni woolly tights) and realised they were Doré-Doré (DD) tights, the same as the ones I get for my DD.

I went to get some for myself and there are loads of different ones! I've got the black ones with a fine purple horizontal stripe on today and they are very warm and lovely. So thanks for the tip!

Wilfsell agree- BUT I found that I can wear teal/petrol blues and all shades of greeny-blue, bluey-grey, with pale grey, medium grey, oatmeal ( def. not beige!), dark purple, sometimes aubergine when not too near the face.

I can wear brown bottoms- eg trousers- but not brown tops.

lou33 · 13/11/2009 14:36

I'm 43 and not remotely petite - a hulking 1m74/58kg/size 10/12!

Not really floaty - I don't really do floaty at all. I like quite structured clothing, hence the Marni obsession and Belgian designers. I'm quite square shouldered...

lou33 · 13/11/2009 14:53

i always imagine bonsoir as a kristin scott thomas kind of person

Georgimama · 13/11/2009 15:00

Grr to hear Anna describe 174cm/58kg as hulking. And that we are same height and I've got about 25kg on her.

Georgimama · 13/11/2009 15:02

Yes I agree with lou. That's how I imagine her looking (younger naturally). That Anglo-French look.
