  1. Dying your hair a matte brown or black. So ageing and unattractive especially when also sporting bed flattened crown at which white roots are visible.
  1. Long skirt, jaunty jerkin and medium helled boot ensemble (this particular species' natural habitat is M&S).
  1. Not getting your teeth scaled and polished on a regular basis.
  1. Wearing too many gold rings at once.

Oh and please stop dragging your sheepish looking dhs with you around the lingerie dept. Haven't they got shelves ot put up or lawns to mow?

god these lists are sooo boring wear what you want fgs why would you take advice from total strangers anybody knows what looks minging and what nice we just have to make the best of what we have with money restraints taken into consideration

MeAndMyMonkey · 13/11/2009 11:55

40 plus here...
I am wearing a (short)brown moleskin Kew skirt but with a bright pink cashmere v neck sweater/white t shirt combo... is that so wrong?
I prefer brown leather to black for bags/boots etc, although I do have a sassy sort of clementine coloured leather bag which is quite fabulous.
I hardly ever wear black (except in summer) and love orange and pink if anybody cares!
Quite liking these random rules...

Remotew · 13/11/2009 11:58

I live in the lake district and wouldn't been seen dead in a fleece except out for a proper walk. Honestly the townies come here in their matching fleeces and waterproof jackets to go looking round the anorak shops. Tutt Tutt.

PerArduaAdNauseum · 13/11/2009 11:59

This is my new school run dress - lot's of colour to cheer me up on a winter morning. I've painted my walker to match so I can accessorise properly.

Cloudspotter · 13/11/2009 12:04

Go on awaeinamanger, tell us which one of those items you are wearing ?

Only kidding, I know what you mean, but it is harmless fun. I never wear anything except for a long skirt with boots, I dye my hair dark brown and I haven't had a scale and polish for a while.

I'm not in the slightest bit offended by this thread though. Because I DON'T have a jerkin. OR a merkin.

mamadiva · 13/11/2009 12:07

LOL at this thread

I am not middle aged, I am only 23 but I have god awful fashion sense as far as I'm concerned if it's clean I can wear it, never mind co-ordination etc

And I do have a purple Regatta fleece which I love and wear all the time because it's cosy, comfy and is much better than black all the time although it is normall teamed with either a black tshirt or a rusty orange one that I've had since I had DS now 3.5YO

Kathyis12feethighandbites · 13/11/2009 12:15

Moondog, what do you wear?

Talkable · 13/11/2009 12:16

I am here to defend the wearers of cream, brown and oatmeal. They ate great colours and can look v classy.

I am currently sat in a soft play centre wearing khaki skinny trousers and a dark oatmeal jumperwith brown knee high boots and I guarantee I look ALOT better than the mothers here who are "being brave with colour".

Its all about the fit ladies.

aweaninamanger · 13/11/2009 12:16

im not offended in the least and in my case it would be the dodgy crown but some people really take these threads seriously i think and will be all a flutter in thinking that they look a mess when they dont IFSWIM

Cloudspotter · 13/11/2009 12:20

I do see what you mean. If someone was insecure and had a particularly bad day, then sat there with all of the above, they might feel a bit got at.

My crown is OK, but seemingly within days of dyeing it, I have two Morticia style white streaks on the sides. Am even toying with the idea of finding them cool these days....

My dad used to call my mum's crown "the tonsure". How cruel looking back

BoysAreLikeDogs · 13/11/2009 12:22

pmsl at the notion that oatmeal cream and brown ate great colours

arf

SausageRocket · 13/11/2009 12:22

Not all of us 'lot' are 'middle aged'

NorkilyChallenged · 13/11/2009 12:28

What is the official start of middle age-dom then?

PerArduaAdNauseum · 13/11/2009 12:30

I wear a lot of sludge colours according to my sister, but you know what? I'm very pale, and something like a silvery-olive makes my skin look like alabaster, where a bright colour (apart from some reds and oranges) just makes me look ill. My sister tried to get me to try on a lime-green top once 'how can you know it won't suit you till you've tried' 'er, 40 years of practice?'. I do think a lot of people never actually look at themselves properly you know.

SausageRocket · 13/11/2009 12:32

Dunno NC, but it is deffo NOT sub 30 !

Rhubarb · 13/11/2009 12:37

I'm still in my thirties and of the opinion that if your figure is still flauntable, then we should flaunt it before bits start falling off!

I wear skinny jeans (no flab hanging out thankyouverymuch), I could wear vest stops (no batwings either) but I'm too white. I want to take advantage of being slim whilst I can.

Having said that, I would never now dye my hair as most of the mums at the school have dyed red or pink hair with black roots and it looks HORRIBLE.

Anyway, what about those young mums who dress like they're in their fifties?

MeAndMyMonkey · 13/11/2009 12:47

middle age-dom starts at 60 these days, doesn't it?
My mum is in her 60's and still very chic, in my head she is only just middle-aged! [deluded and clutching at straws emoticon]

cocolepew · 13/11/2009 12:59

Don't wear polo necks with necklaces over the top of them

Actually just don't wear polo necks.

Or polo shirts with the collar up.

Or polo shirts with a round necked jumper.

And necklaces over the top.

ruddynorah · 13/11/2009 13:08

when does middle age start please?

i assume i am not one of 'you lot' at 29.

naughtymummy · 13/11/2009 13:20

I quite love being middle aged (34). Means I don't have to try to convince anyone I would look ok in flouresent colours ever ever again and can wear what I know suits me from years of experience.Including brown thanks.

wigglybeezer · 13/11/2009 13:24

I have just accidentally died my hair purply red, people keep complimenting me but i am a bit horrified that some will think I am trying to be jaunty. I'm not even very grey just wanted to improve the condition of my reddish brown hair for a special occassion but was a bit misled by the printing on the packet (left it on a bit too long as well, am hoping it fades fast).

FWIW my pet hate is matchy- matchy outfits especially cheap chunky necklaces to match an outfit, and I can never reconcile myself to anything navy blue.

I buy Toast to avoid the Boden recognition factor that happens in our town.

However most of my friends do look nice, despite committing some so-called fashion crimes, I just can't bring myself to join them.

NorkilyChallenged · 13/11/2009 13:26

naughtymummy - 34??????

Cloudspotter · 13/11/2009 13:27

wigglybeezer, I have verged into Toast territory for the same reason.

And I am not even middle aged at 36???

stressed2007 · 13/11/2009 13:30

oh this thread is just so funny

lljkk · 13/11/2009 13:30

Middle aged starts at 40, imho.
I am past that age, btw.
MIL (68) only wears shades of brown.
That's enough to rule brown out, as far as I'm concerned.
Am I the only one on MN who fully dislikes the Boden range? I never see anything on their website catalog that doesn't scream 'conservative pretentious aspirational professional stuck up middle-class middle England': fine if that's who you are, but not who I am, for sure.
