Dd wants me to have long straight blonde hair and waft about in dresses.

Poor little mite, it's never going to happen (says she, short dark curly hair, biker boots, skinny jeans, oversized sweater...)....

I put a skirt on yesterday and she nearly wept with joy.

noddyholder · 22/09/2009 10:42

My 15 yr old ds gives a sideways snigger and says What is that? to most of my clothes.

Blackduck · 22/09/2009 10:44

Ds says I am not a lady because I don't wear dresses, lipstick or high heeled shoes . I'd look like a short, grey haired bloke in drag if I did....
He is ecstatic if I wear anything brighter than a shade of grey

I bought some red tights last week (already have plum and teal). I am glad I am not the only older woman who will be wearing them. I don't intend to wear them with a bum grazing mini skirt or anything (I wouldn't have done even in my youth, the last time coloured tights came around) but under a black skirt with knee high boots.

I thought it might be 'fun' or am I too old and deluded for it to be fun any more?

phew, thanks dexter.

lou33 · 22/09/2009 11:57

i like beards

MagicGlassesFairy · 22/09/2009 12:27

Hooray for the coloured tights then. If I see anyone over 40 wearing them I will give you a knowing look. Mine came from (shhh) Laura Ashley - what the hell is it with LA and butterflies on their clothes? Covering things with butterflies does not make you look younger. (My excuse is that the trousers in LA fit me - the tights were just there).
Talking of tights, I saw some Halloween purple and black stripey ones in Asda and was instantly transported back to university circa 1985.

ScaredOfCows · 22/09/2009 12:59

That thing when you look down into a mirror is bad, but what is infinitely worse is the 'on top' sex position, where everything just seems to hang down these days. One to avoid these day, methinks!

Niecie · 22/09/2009 13:16

Don't remember stripey tights at university (also 1985 ish)

I did have a pair of cobalt blue ones though. I wouldn't wear those any more but I think I might still have them, although a) they would probably fall apart if I tried to put them on and b) they wouldn't fit anyway.

Is LA not considered appropriate either? Ho hum!

So after my post the other day about where the older woman can shop these days if not blessed with a large bank account we have only come up with The White Company which for me is just, well, white (plus shades of grey)!

No other suggestions?

Scared of Cows - Just keep your nice cosy pj top on - hides a multitude of sins.

bigTillyMint · 22/09/2009 13:25

Have just had a facial, and been told not to put any make-up on today.

What do I do for the school run? Paper bag with two holes cut?

ScaredOfCows · 22/09/2009 13:26

Neicie - will that be the beige winceyette (sp?) one then?

brokenspacebar · 22/09/2009 13:41

Neicie I don't think there is a shop for us....unless you count Laura Ashley - I suppose Monsoon is not really a hip young thing kind of shop either and of course Boden, Fat Face and Great Plains.

I still shop in Topshop, Zara, H&M etc, I just don't buy the obviously just for the under 25's clothes - though it is tricky with some clothes - boyfriend jackets anyone? sequins etc.

MagicGlassesFairy · 22/09/2009 13:51

Niecie
Maybe it was just me with the stripey tights in 1985 ...
I think LA is generally derided in S&B, as being middle-aged (and they probably haven't even seen the butterfly infestation),

SweetEm · 22/09/2009 14:39

Oh, can I join? I am nearly 39.

I have to dye hair every 6-8 weeks to cover grey roots. I had my first grey hair when I was about 20.

Last year at my eye test I was shocked to discover that I had got less short-sighted. I didn't think I was anywhere near old enough for that to be happening. So depressing.

And then recently, in an effort to look good, I finally made a monumental effort to lose the baby weight only to find that my arse and thighs are still fat and my face has gone really thin, thus making me look older/gaunt/more wrinkled! Aaaaarrrggggghhhhhhh!

orangina · 22/09/2009 14:44

My new favourite shop is Cos.... fab, not too teeny, good quality... not sure if they have a website, will have a look around....

orangina · 22/09/2009 14:50

(website full of pics of po-faced anorexic 14 year old wearing v structured clothes and looking like a dressed up toothpick.... not at all indicative of what I saw in there today.... will NOT post link...)

cocolepew · 22/09/2009 16:27

I don't own tights of any colour. I shall buy some and a jumper dress. It wil be like being 14 again. Good tip about the shader and Toner, I'll try that.

I hate it when I wake up in the morning, have my shower, put on full face of make up, do hair, have breakfast, run around shrieking at the children, get in the car, look in the mirror anfd the crease is still there hours later.

Will sleep on silk only.

MaggieBeauLeo · 22/09/2009 16:33

This catalogue always makes me feel less old and squat.

Models are not 20 and some of them, although not fat far from it, are not twiglets either

here

masonicpixiesreadthedailymail · 22/09/2009 16:47

I was v badly let down by my last coil - old koily myngeogre didn't have the strength to hang on in there for more than 10 months

doesn't say much for my pelvic floor I guess

I love coloured tights. Mostly though they just fill up a draw. I pull em out and go 'nah too young' The footless hot pink ones now have a whiff of surgical support about them

CybilLiberty · 22/09/2009 16:51

Maggie it's a mixed bag on that site you linked to, but

this is a nice surprise

MaggieBeauLeo · 22/09/2009 17:02

WeeeeeLLLLL spotted CybilLiberty.

I'm going to a greenhouse party in about a week (like tupperware, same idea) and I had had a look on line and nothing grabbed me. Taht is lovely.

I don't HAVE to buy something of course. I won't if I don't want to.

monkeysavingexpertdotcom · 22/09/2009 17:17

Some nice stuff on that website but the tights looked like she'd been splashed by a car.
Also own purple tights and teal ones and want some plummy ones - used to wear them in the 80s so probably shouldn't be wearing them now. Sod it.
