Do we think it's going to be a bad winter then? I don't think I even wore a coat last winter, except for a sailing waterproof when it was raining.

I have been looking, not seen anything, but probably wouldn't buy until October, I live in the far north east of Scotland...cannot imagine surviving without a winter coat.

Bran where do you live? It was hovering around zero in my neck of the woods, for a fair bit of the winter (down to -15), I was in thermals December to March.

I even got chilblains, after standing on ice in wellies, worn with two pairs of socks, after school...watching dc skating around for an hour - I bought a pair of sheepskin boots(I know they don't look very stylish), after that and the weather changed almost immediately.

I need a very warm winter coat, knee length, I am short and it is never easy to find something flattering, and warm, and that will do for walking dc to school in all kinds of weather... I will settle for knee length, warm and practical, sigh.

kickassangel · 14/08/2009 03:11

after messing up last year, and not being fully prepared, I intend to get something like this as soon as shops start stocking them.

brokenspacebar, I see your minus 15, and 'raise' (or lower) you to -20, with wind chill giving a 'real feel' of -35.
Uggs for the feet, and a really good coat for the rest of me. 2 pairs of trousers, 2 pairs of gloves, 2 hats & thermals were needed for the bus stop each morning. sadly, as i say, i overestimated the abilities of my 'normal' winter coat & will need to do better this year.

chocolateshoes · 14/08/2009 18:17

Was about to start a similar begging for winter coad help when I found this thread. Love that Parka Kickaaaangel but its too ££££. I need a hood, 3/4 length, waterproof & warm for break duty on the school yard.

nicknameidlike · 14/08/2009 18:29

Got a black one from Per Una 2-3 years ago and love it with it's red silky lining and rose buttons, so have bought this camel version to go with new crochet cloche hat in cream and brown. I can never wait for Autumn!

fookin ell can we have our Summer first?

purplepeony · 14/08/2009 21:48

Boden Uptown Coat- ordered early and got 20% off. Grey.

Nicer than it looks in photos - nice and soft and can be worn as 3/4th coat ot full length if you are short like me.

fishie · 14/08/2009 21:51

me too with the uptown what colour you got pp? i have grey which is dull but hopefully i can get nice boots.

PinkTulips · 14/08/2009 21:55

Haven't had a coat in over 4 years as i've been pregnant or too fat soon after being preg to justify buying a coat when i knew i would be a size smaller by the spring and it would be wasted money.

I've actually seen one on the [gasp] Boden site i love but it's pricey so will be hunting for a cheaper alternative in the meantime

this in purple

purplepeony · 14/08/2009 23:07

fishie- I got the grey too- wondered about the brown, but thought it might be a bit wishy-washy ,and the teal is lovely but too restricting. I've got black and tan boots, so both should go with the grey and I'll be wearing light/bright scarves.

brokenspacebar · 14/08/2009 23:10

kickassangel, it is in white, in black I might consider it! You must be somewhere that gets pretty damn cold!

I think I live in one of the coldest parts of the uk, so I need to think practical over stylish.

purplepeony · 14/08/2009 23:21

If you leave it too late Kbear they will have all gone. If I see one I like, I'll buy it- even in July ,as I have done this year!

I find a good coat lasts for 3-4 years before it looks dated or is just worn out. I tend to spend around £150 and wear them to death for the supermarket and everything if it's cold. I once paid a LOT more than that some years back but felt the style was too classic and ended up giving it to mum!

If you think about it, if you wear the coat for 9 months of the year more or less, even a coact around £250 works out at £1 a day. Buying cheap is not always best- you need to look for quality too. Having said that I have a lovely plain black, knee length fitted coat from Next that cost about £100 and is still going strong.

kickassangel · 15/08/2009 04:28

i live in michigan, we have much more extreme seasons - currently 81 F tonight.

i'm only half translated between US & UK - i do heat in F & cold in C!, so -35 was C, about 0 F. it's cold enough to make your nostrils freeze up inside within a second of leaving the house.

the coat i linked to came in choc brown & cherry brown last year, i'll be looking for that.

Wallace · 15/08/2009 07:16

brokenspacebar - like me then you will be looking at these coats thiking that not one of them would be warm enough for winter!

oxocube · 15/08/2009 07:17

Its August FFS

Wallace · 15/08/2009 07:28

Apart from the artic parka!

PinkTulips · 15/08/2009 12:24

oxocube... it might be august but looking out my window now you'd be hard pressed to believe it. All the summer plants are dying back, it's raining freezing cold rain and storming, it's barely above single digits in temperature and everyone is wrapped up in multiple layers of clothes.

I'm going to need a coat to walk the kids to school in september so i need to be looking now

depressing; yes, sensible: yes.

ComeOVeneer · 15/08/2009 12:32

Just ordered this and this
