frigging awesome!

I used a method from this thread and then something similar to trim the back.
I did have same length below shoulder hair and now it is all layered and light and pretty.
And it took 10 minutes in the kitchen with a brush, hairband and some scissors!

I am going to do this today.I had one length hair and had a fringe last year i hate it and have been growing it so have long messy fringe and past shoulder hair and am hoping to blend the fringe in if i have other layers.Fingers crossed! There are always hairbands and slides if it goes wrong

MrsSchadenfreude · 17/04/2009 11:41

I've just done it and it looks fine! I have very thick, curly hair, and it was in a hideous, all one length grown out bob. I pulled the pony tail to the side where I have the parting and chopped. About four inches. Then I layered it a bit more around my face, chopping with the scissors, and pulling the hair round like they do at the hairdressers, so that the layers are pretty much the same length each side, and it's got its curl and bounce back. Back is layered quite nicely on its own. Result!

MrsSchadenfreude · 17/04/2009 11:45

I didn't straighten my hair either - I cut it dry, and sorted out the layers when it was dry too. This way you can see which way the curl is going to go, as well, so you are unlikely to get one annoying bit sticking up. Think there is also more margin for error with thick curly hair - errors less likely to show!

misdee · 17/04/2009 13:03

i just did it!

BitOfFun · 17/04/2009 13:14

Very Rachel!

bumpybecky · 17/04/2009 13:18

so many brave people

was going to cut mine, but have just promised DH I'll let him do it later. Grrr to instant messaging!

misdee · 17/04/2009 13:19

moany lisa i put the pony tail to tehside where my poarting is.

am actually very pleased with it. it didnt take long. i need better sisscors though

moonmother · 17/04/2009 13:20

Also have just done mine

Normally I'd wait to wash it and do it when it's damp but I couldn't wait

I put my ponytail central, as I have a centre parting and cut 3 inches off and cut up into it to layer the back. I don't have a fringe so my shortest layer around my face is in line with my lips, then I just cut up into the layers around my face.

MrsSchadenfreude is right , it's actually easier on wavy/curly hair as it doesn't notice so much if the layers aren't exactly the same length each side.

My hair feels alot better, I was starting to get 'woolly' ends and when I had finished I just gave it a spray with Aussie leave in Conditoner and fluffed it back up.

It's actually given me a few more curls, as it's taken some of the weight out of it.

All in all a good experiment!!

noddyholder · 17/04/2009 13:37

I still haven't had a chance as am doing marathon homework supervise with ds who has 2 big essays to do by monday!Am off now to look for the scissors.I have the thinning scissors already and will use those and small sharp scissors for the ponytail.

bumpybecky · 17/04/2009 13:41

does it matter if you use normal scissors for the thinning bit?

we've got some hairdressing ones (well they say hairdressing, they came in DH's electric razor set and weren't expensive), but not the proper thinning ones

noddyholder · 17/04/2009 14:02

Normal scissors are fine.I will be looking at everyone with flicky hair now thinking did you do that yourself?maybe we should call it the mumsnet like the rachel

Dropdeadfred · 17/04/2009 14:24

I actually loved the OP's hair before it was cut..so full and thick and healthy looking.

I would NEVER cut my own hair but fair play to all those who dared and sheared!!

iMum · 17/04/2009 14:40

I did it! but i was very tentative with the amount i chopped off! I think rally i need to do it again and be a bit braver! but yes I am pleased!!

serenity · 17/04/2009 15:02

I just cut 4" (and layered) DD's mad curly hair doing this, and it looks really good. Yay!

EachPeachPearMum · 17/04/2009 15:39

hey misdee looks good!

MrsSchadenfreude · 17/04/2009 16:09

So will this cut now be known as the "Mumsnet", like the "Rachel"?

badgermonkey · 17/04/2009 16:41

I just did mine - only a little bit to layer it round the front, and I think it looks great for three minute's work! I can't afford £20 to get it done and tbh, that's all I would have ended up getting a hairdresser to do anyway.

VictorianSqualor · 17/04/2009 16:57

I am sooo tempted to do this, but I have a party to go to tomorrow and no time to get to the hairdressers if it fucks up.

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 17/04/2009 17:17

You are all so brave and it's paid off, you all look fantastic, would be hard pushed to tell you hadn't been to a salon.

Question - if you already have layers in will this work? AM imagining my hair in the pony tail and half will fall out - and does it only work on blooming long hair?

JackBauer · 17/04/2009 18:22

Yay all fellow 'Mumsnet's'! Misdee, that looks great, yours is a bit shorted than mine but I hate hair in my eyes.
I cut it on teh side as I always have a side parting so it is easier.

I did just cut DD's hair. not in a Mumsnetjust trimming ends and cutting a fringe as she walked into the door again today because of hair in her eyes. but she flinched. And not her fringe is about half a cm too short.
Bugger!

My hair before was not good, the ends were really dry and nasty and tangled every 5 frigging minutes. I actually never wear it down as it is so dull and horrible looking but now it is lvoely as I have the nice bits left and the dry bits gone!

expatinscotland · 17/04/2009 18:46

Yours look fab, too, misdee!

I likey.

I'm just waiting for the scissors because I had to order mine online and all the ones I have here are pretty dull and rubbish except my sewing ones.

ChasingSquirrels · 17/04/2009 18:50

bloody hell, I thought JB was my cousin from that first pic - spooky! The only has 1 ds though, so I am guessing now.

VictorianSqualor · 17/04/2009 18:52

I did it. Always was crap at resisting temptation.
Just need to do something with the back now, didn't someone say they did the same with the back of their hair?

LadyOfWaffle · 17/04/2009 18:57

O wow, i kept seeing this thread but didn't open (thinking the cut would be err... bowl-esque) but they look great! I am getting some scissors tomorrow - will post pics! I paid £50 for some twonk @ T & G last time to give me THE worst haircut of my life - I ended up like that - seriously.

expatinscotland · 17/04/2009 19:02

In October I paid £30 to someone who absolutely butchered my hair, the latest in a long line but this was especially bad.

It hasn't grown very fast, either, after having DS in November.
