frigging awesome!

I used a method from this thread and then something similar to trim the back.
I did have same length below shoulder hair and now it is all layered and light and pretty.
And it took 10 minutes in the kitchen with a brush, hairband and some scissors!

Wow - I'm seriously impressed at the results

expatinscotland · 16/04/2009 22:34

Thanks for the recommendation on scissors, Bill.

Mamazon · 16/04/2009 22:35

OMG! i love that. im soo tempted to do mine now.

may have to take a before and after shot though just so you can all cry or cheer along with me

ravenAK · 16/04/2009 22:39

Have I missed something?

Do you really just grab it all in a front ponytail & start chopping? This could be the answer for me, I hate hairdressers.

(looks great btw JB )

expatinscotland · 16/04/2009 22:39

I'm going to have to go for the scissors, Mamazon. Still £20 cheaper than another hairdresser who's going to cut my hair too fecking short because I'm 'old'.

Mamazon · 16/04/2009 22:50

me too. gonna go boots tomorrow and report back.
mind you i have very long hair (halfway down my back) so i don't think i'll get such great result.

might do a smaller front section though to give me the fringey bit.

i was gonna go hairdressers anyway so if i fook it up its not so bad.

its only hair after all

TrillianAstra · 16/04/2009 23:06

Mamazon - mkae sure you take lots of good pictures like JB here!

Mamazon · 16/04/2009 23:12

i'll have to wait till watershed before posting so as not to scare the kiddies then

BitOfFun · 16/04/2009 23:29

< bated breath >

TrillianAstra · 16/04/2009 23:29

Just ben to look at pics on your profle after that comment and am confuzzled.

PortAndLemon · 16/04/2009 23:39

ravenAK -- you put in the ponytail, chop straight across, and then you need to spend four or five minutes snipping into the end so that it winds up looking like an old-fashioned shaving brush (i.e. this softens up all the harsh edges so that you get soft gradations and no choppy bits).

JackBauer · 17/04/2009 07:07

Ooh, I want you all back here with pics later!

I am definately going to invest in some proper scissors, DD's hair is going to need serious cutting at some point so it will be money well spent.

It might work better than mine Mamzon, When I did the front ponytail it didn't catch half my hair at the back which is why I ha to do another ponytail.

This is the method I linked to at the top raven.

I'm very impressed, you look great. I've been gearing myself up to try this ever since I read the other post and saw the video.

I want to try colouring my hair too. My last trip to the salon cost me over 90 pounds - just a local place, nothing fancy, I'm convinced I could do a reasonable job myself. I have longish layers and a fringe so it's fairly casual although I do like it quite straight - would the straightness show up my imperfect cut, hmm. Still gathering courage at this stage.

flightoftheeasterbunyip · 17/04/2009 09:36

Will that work if you have wavy hair, ie not straight?

I have trouble getting mine to hang straight especially the fringe.

mychildrenarebarmy · 17/04/2009 09:56

I am wondering about the wavy hair too.

cocolepew · 17/04/2009 10:02

I bought thinning scissors in Superdrug for £3.

moonmother · 17/04/2009 10:11

I have been cutting my hair for years like this, I saw Lee on This Morning doing this years ago.

It works great, my hair has a slight wave to it, so I always cut it after I'd washed, dried and straightened it.

I now embrace my waves and have been neglecting my straighteners for the last few months, and have given my hair a trim but haven't really done 'the cut'.

Hair does really need a good cut though so I will have a go later and let you know the results.

In theory, it should work on wavy hair. If after you've washed it you follow the procedure , making sure you've made a neat even ponytail , pulling the hair straight , then it should work. To get the waves back though you may need to at least wet the hair again after.

JackBauer · 17/04/2009 10:23

My hair does have a very slight wave to it but is mostly straight, I wouldn't know about curly hair. We need someone brave to test it.....go on moonmother!

I washed it this morning and it looks great, I think as it is layers it doesn't show up any imperfections, whereas if I had tried to cut it straight it woudl look awful I am sure.

Dh keeps looking over and saying 'It really doesn't look like you did it yourself' in a really suspicious tone of voice, as if I have sneaked off to hairdressers with DD's in tow

OP posts:
claireybee · 17/04/2009 10:45

I'm going to do it!

It will work better if I straighten it first won't it?

Mamazon · 17/04/2009 10:56

im going to my firends to do it later so that if it goes wrong she can comfort me. I'll get her to snap some piccies as well.

not sre if im nervous or excited. think i might lop quite a chunk off so everyone can see that i've had it cut and see what people say.

claireybee · 17/04/2009 11:07

Do you know what? It's actually ok! My tip would be that if your hair is very long (like mine is) tie the ponytail on your head like they do, then put another hairband further down towards where you want to cut to keep all the ends together.

I took about 3 inches off the length (haircut badly overdue but no £ to get it done) and another inch or so for the layers. Has got rid of all the straggly dry ends if nothing else

Mamazon · 17/04/2009 11:11

that was my plan too clairybee.

i am a big wuss though. I have a very love hate thing going on with my hair. i hate it as its so dull and boring, but i love its length and the fact that men other people love it.

plus i have a very round fat face so don' wanna go too sort or i'd look like a dumpling

ponygirl17 · 17/04/2009 11:14

Thanks guys! I just did mine and it looks great!

Looked like shit with the 1st ponytail cut, but did a few more to layer the layers, as I have blond hair and it is really easy to see lines when I cut my hair, and it worked a treat, soooo easy. Only took 10 mins. I have cut my own hair for ever, but go to the hairdressers for the more difficult stuff, but now you have saved me the time and money to get this more difficult look... I am well happy - THANKS.

But now I need to do my roots!

ponygirl17 · 17/04/2009 11:15

BTW I did my ponytails all central, you do not have to do it on the side, I have a side parting but always cut it centrally, oh and I straightened before during and after.

MoanyLisa · 17/04/2009 11:18

What side do you do for a side parting?

Do you cut up into the ponytail randomly? What are the lines that the hairdresser in the video talked about?
