It is freezing and I need a new coat

I have a dressy one to wear into town etc.

I need a more practical one to wear when walking the dog, walking with dd and for work when on duty outside.

I am a size 18 which limits my choices somewhat and although I want practicality I dont want to look like a michelin man or fool.

budget??

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 18:28

arounf £100 could go slightly higher if it is something I really like. Have £50 of M and S voucher so around £150 if from there but they dont seem to have anything.

tesco clothing range do some lovely coats from size 6-22 (can you tell where I used to work). But it's a bit under your budget lol

bigTillyMint · 01/02/2009 18:51

There's a lovely warm jacket that I was coveting here but they've only got the larger sizes left now

mysterymoniker · 01/02/2009 18:55

barbour?

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 18:57

mumof2 I will buy a jacket from anywhere that does the job.

Do they not look really micheline like on bigtilly? I have never worn a coat like that in my life.

I got a goose down jacket from Uniqlo for £40 - it's not too puffy and it is VERY warm

mysterymoniker · 01/02/2009 18:59

a medium weight barbour is v warm

some here

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 19:00

am I going to look an idiot in this I liked the idea of somthing longer.

Disenchanted3 · 01/02/2009 19:01

this? m&s - plenty of cash left to spend then

Molesworth · 01/02/2009 19:01

mine's a shorter version of that - I'm not too keen on the long ones but it will keep you lovely and warm ... and who cares what it looks like for dog walking etc?

mysterymoniker · 01/02/2009 19:01

it looks quite bulky

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 19:03

I would have thought barbour would be out of my budget but will have a look.

Had not thought of uniqlo.

OP posts:
bigTillyMint · 01/02/2009 19:05

I agree, the coat is a bit shapeless

The white M&S one looks nice, but does not look warm.

I think the Lands End jacket is more fitted, so wouldn't look too Michelinesque. Anyway, your dogs and the children at school would rather you were warm and happy

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 19:05

found this on ebay but I think the pockets on chest will make my boobs look humungous. I always buy tailored wool coats but am outdoors so much here rather than poncing around town.

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 19:07

I looked at that coat today in marks and it looked like a grandma coat from BHS, just couldnt even bring myself to try it on. I hate hate hate fur hoods/

OP posts:
bigTillyMint · 01/02/2009 19:07

YUCK!

And it doesn't look warm!

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 19:10

No it doesnt does it.

God I am crap at buying anything remotely practical

OP posts:
duckyfuzz · 01/02/2009 19:11

I can recommend this it is more ££ than requested, but I have it in black and it is the warmest thing I've ever worn, waterproof, light weight and fitted too, worth the money imo

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 19:13

I would pay 150 but they only go up to a 14/

OP posts:
fishie · 01/02/2009 19:14

twinset i don't think anyone above a certain size or who has much bosom should wear a very padded coat like those giant gap ones. i look particularly ridiculous in it as am big up top but spindly legs.

agree with you re pockets on that barbour one but depends on your shape. it is much more flattering than the lands end one and really quite sleek.

duckyfuzz · 01/02/2009 19:15

oops sorry tsap, didn't check sizes, will try to find similar

twinsetandpearls · 01/02/2009 19:27

I agree fishie which is why I have never bought a practial jacket. But we live a much morr outdoorsy lifestyle so I look an idiot in my more dressy coats and need something warmer.

Dp thinks a barbour is a good idea.
