"European costume" fancy dress theme for New year's eve party. Grrrr.....

I don't mind the theme so much, and can just about bear the fact that there's dressing up at all....

What really pees me off is that if you don't comply, there's a forfeit!!!

Call me grumpy but that doesn't sound like fun to me.

And what the hell am I going to wear?

Union Jack dress - like Ginger Spice!!

Crap theme for a party BTW!

llareggub · 15/12/2008 21:14

Go as a Morris dancer, or be brave and go as Lady Godiva. You might get a bit chilly however!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 15/12/2008 21:15

It is crap isn't it. Oh well, we missed their Bavarian evening so I should count myself lucky.

Black trousers, stripy t-shirt, beret, string of onions optional, et voila!! Can still look chic and not too expensive!

llareggub · 15/12/2008 21:19

Moulin Rouge?

Lizzylou · 15/12/2008 21:19

Saucy french maid?
Pre-Napoleanic French, you could go as a Marie Antoinette type, a wig, heaving bosoms, powdered face and beauty spots? Someone went as that at a Fancy dress party I went to and she looked fabulous. You'd have to hire the costume, unless you have an extensive wardrobe?!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 15/12/2008 21:21

LOL I have neither a wig nor heaving bosoms in my wardrobe

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 15/12/2008 21:22

I do want something so I don't look a complete twunt when the novelty has worn off after half an hour.

I'm stuck other than the French one. It sounds an easy theme at first, but isn't at all.

Or blonde scandanavian with wig.

Lederhosen? (Although have no idea where to get that from)

flamenco?

bull fighter - black costume & a red sheet/table cloth?

Toga?

I googled & found this which is a bit random, but good if you get bored between Christmas & new year www.ehow.com/how_2067466_make-12th-century-european-costume.html [hmm

Blondilocks · 15/12/2008 21:23

French Maid would be easy.

this is amusing

HostessWithTheMostest · 15/12/2008 21:25

Giant chocolate ball? You'd be a Malteser!

fluffles · 15/12/2008 21:26

french - stripy top and capri pants a la audry hepburn

spanish - flamenco dancer

german - bavarian bar maid

austrian - heidi (was she austrian?)

scandinavian - wooly jumper, blonde plaits, earmuffs

scottish - tartan

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 15/12/2008 21:28

could you just carry one of these?

Lizzylou · 15/12/2008 21:28

A Halloween Skeleton costume and you could be...Hungary?

Sorry!

Toga for Roman could be good?

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 15/12/2008 21:28

damn they're not European, are they?

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 15/12/2008 21:29

Ah, now. Audry hepburn, that's a look I could tolerate for the evening. (A girl can dream...)

And I could do scandinavian quite easily. Does going as a member of Abba count as scandinavian? I could do that kind of thing?

OP posts:
Lizzylou · 15/12/2008 21:32

Abba, yes, of course, easy to do and still be relatively comfy and stylish

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 15/12/2008 21:53

Yes, that's more the thing I'm looking for. Normal clothes, but on a theme.

Any more ideas?

OP posts:
Swedes · 15/12/2008 21:59

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 15/12/2008 22:00

mrsruffallo · 15/12/2008 22:01

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 15/12/2008 22:01
