What shoes should I wear with skirts?

Oh dear, the ignominy of starting a style and beauty thread (like I care about these things!) but I need advice.

I tend to be a jeans and boots kind of girl but I might have to start wearing skirts more often and want to know what shoes I should buy to go with them. Not court shoes surely? I find them so uncomfortable. And not old ladies' lace up shoes either. Nothing with high heels (small heel fine) as I am tall enough without adding to it.

I just saw Cod's choice of footglove boots and was expecting to hate them but I actually like them (though doubt they would fit my feet) so my faith in Cod's shoe sense is restored, so Cod please feel free to post too.

Oh, one other thing, I have wide feet and my left foot is one and a half sizes bigger than my right foot so the shoes can't have a pointy toe and the uppers must be quite high.

But if you could just post links to the kind of shoe I should look for, then I can sort out the details.

TIA.

if oyu have wide feet it may be worth spalshign out at duo boots

DumbledoresGirl · 28/09/2008 10:33

No, not boots, I have long boots already. I am looking for shoes.

Skirts tend to be mid calf length.

Price, not cheap, decent high street range.

LTH's choice of shoes was vile. Don't leave me in her clutches!

DumbledoresGirl · 28/09/2008 10:36

LOL @ Postman Pat woman!

I can't easily link to skirts because I have become a woman who has to buy at charity shops.

But that does mean I am prepared to spend more on my shoes.

Show me links. I hear the word wedges and feel repulsed, but if I see what you mean, I might like.

Long swishy skirts, cod, it is not hard to picture! I am a primary school teacher so work on that image.

I am 5' 8", size 12, long fantastic legs, viviacious and GSOH. Opps, sorry this is not a lonely hearts ad is it? Well the first 3 things apply anyway.

Dh would agree re short skirts, but I am 43 now and don't want to embrace the mutton dressed as lamb look. Also, want to be warm and comfortable. But if the shoes could also go with shorter skirts, I can certainly wear them. My legs are my best feature.

Is this what you meant by Mary Janes?

OP posts:
robinpud · 28/09/2008 11:19

THey are Mary Janes but I don't think you could have found a more hideous pair if you had tried!

robinpud · 28/09/2008 11:26

These are much nicer and could be worn with trousers or skirt. Have you tried white Stuff for work skirts- they are good.

NotCod · 28/09/2008 11:38

DumbledoresGirl · 28/09/2008 13:05

Robinpud, glad you said that, saving me from having to! They look a bit Enid Blyton school girlish to me (but then, coming from Malory Towers that is maybe not surprising? Your choice a bit nicer.

Good point about getting shoes that go with trousers and skirts. I can only afford one pair and the more multi-use they are, the better.

Cod, I like the look you describe. I have just been up to my wardrobe and remembered I do still have some just above knee length straight skirts I could wear. I am size 6 usually. Not sure of width as I don't normally buy shoes from shops that give you a choice .

Left foot is actually 6.5 and right foot is 5, but with the right design, a size 6 works.

OP posts:
robinpud · 28/09/2008 13:12

Not sure why you need smarter wardrobe.. promotion ? If it helps, I am in the same line of work as you and have just bought a pair of tailored grey trousers from NEXT- business type- they have loads, just find one cut to suit your shape; a couple of jumpers from marks- lime green and deep purple and a pair of low heeled shoes and so have 2 outfits for work, but jumpers work with other trousers and trousers work with other tops.
I also have a couple of white stuff skirts I wear with long boots and then am warm and smart.

Next have very reasonably priced shoes; I can't link to the ones I bought but they are in the shop

NotCod · 28/09/2008 13:24

size 6!!! and in long skrits
oh no

robinpud · 28/09/2008 13:34

what cod means is you are far too petite to wear a long skirt. you need something as malory says that is knee length.

If you are size 6 then surely everything is good.. not just legs

robinpud · 28/09/2008 13:36

Hmm.. oops.. makes mental note to read thread propelry and not post whilst sitting in bath towel after exertions at gym on emtpy stomach. Sorry
Now see that you are size 12 so could do long skirts, but they can be very unflattering so sometrhing more tailored would be better imo

DumbledoresGirl · 28/09/2008 17:10

LOL I am completely lost by all this. I am not looking for a tailored look. I prefer to be comfortable and reasonably smart enough to pass muster in schools. I have not had a promotion. I am drifting back into the workplace via supply teaching following 12 years of mostly being a SAHM. When I was a senior management teacher I would wear suits and I was over dressed by my colleagues' standards even then. I don't have loads of money to spend on new clothes. I bought a swishy skirt and a blouse that matches in a charity shop the other day and I have approximately 2 long skirts, 2 medium length skirts and 2 short straight skirts for which I would like a pair of shoes. I already have boots but would like something else so that the boots don't get trashed too quickly.

Oh I also have a pair of taylored black trousers which I have been known to wear for work but they are a bit tight on me so I tend not to wear them. But if some shoes could go with them too, that would be a bonus.

So, no ideas for shoes then?

OP posts:
DumbledoresGirl · 28/09/2008 17:11

Oh god tailored
