Hello everyone, old and new.

This is about feeling better about yourself and looking and feeling better etc. But mainly we chat and laugh quite a lot, which has all got to help towards happiness etc.

The rules (anyone can join):

  • Sunscreen at all times
  • No or little booze. Wine or Champagne or whatever at the weekend is allowed if you want it
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day
  • Apply body cream as often as possible
  • Use hand cream
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos
  • Eat healthily
  • Be happy

The idea is that we all feel happier, healthier and glow with the good food, sleep, exercise, water and lack of sun damage.

Some people are doing India and Neris's Idiot Proof Diet (Atkins, more or less), others are doing Slimy World, others are just being as healthy as possible.

Welcome everyone, have a good week.

sobernow, make sure you add service charge

VersdeSociete · 11/09/2008 13:56

Ah, Marina, I just could never feel quite comfortable as krabbie. This name seems a bit cold though...I think all of you in the early 1000s are nearly as old as I am...

The chickpea chilli sounds great.
I have walked for about 45 mins today so that's good.
Food: Special K with blueberries
Falafel in pitta bread with salad
Latte

Feeling mightily hungry though.
Bundle, I too was wondering as I peer through the East London murk about the necessity for suncream...

VersdeSociete · 11/09/2008 13:58

Slimy world sounds good although low carb does seem to equate to all-consuming rage for me...

Cammelia · 11/09/2008 17:59

17th October no good for me as its half-term

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 11/09/2008 19:25

Chickpea chilli sounds yum. My reg number is 15 thousand and something so I'm a mere child. I think it was 2003 I found MN, and mislaid my social life.

I went to the gym again today - 3 days on the trot. But had another nosebleed thisafternoon - what's that all about then? That's about it for my bootcamp too - have forgotten about flexitol since returning from holidays and my hands are in desperate need of hand cream

Snaf · 11/09/2008 20:10

I'm no. 52579, which is weird since I've been here for 5 years Must have re-registered at some point...

Anyway, nice day today, lunch and spa... lovely. Been good food-wise, except for slip-up with insanely sugary 'pure fruit juice and spring water' £2 scam which I picked up without even thinking about it - eeek. Made me feel immediately bloated and sick, though, so am beginning to think there might be something to this low-carb thing after all!

Afraid exercise was more like a bit of aimless splashing in the pool, but I did walk to and from the station

Lots of slathering with bio-oil.

Happiness quota: not bad actually - put the world to rights with an old friend which always does the trick. We decided that we are, actually, Happy. (Only marred by a slightly irritating phone call from ds's dad but we shall gloss over that.)

Will aim for early bed but have Gavin & Stacey DVD winking slyly at me...

Snaf · 11/09/2008 20:12

VdS, I loved krabbiepatty, it always made me smile. But I know what you mean about comfort factor...

unknownrebelbang · 11/09/2008 20:56

Thanks Anniemac - any advice always welcome, although tbh am more concerned about the raised BP than the diabetes at the moment. After yesterday's incident on the playground Que Sera Sera isn't cutting the mustard, but will try again. Will take a look at herbals, some may help with the stress I guess.

Hello vers. I guess I'm a mere babe - if only with regard to length of time on MN).

  • Sunscreen yy
  • No booze
  • 40 mins ex bike, plus 20 mins walking, plus 10 mins twister. Very achy today.
  • Lots of water/weak tea
  • Apply body cream - lax
  • Use hand cream - yy. Must do feet.
  • Go to bed early - midnight last night.
  • Eat healthily - one slip, and an unplanned tea, but controlled nonetheless.
  • Be happy. Well I got an apology of the Head, even though it wasn't actually his fault. I did explain to him why I freaked. Just awaiting one from DH now...oh, what's that - a flying pig!
foxinsocks · 11/09/2008 21:05

Hello!

Finally have my medicine so over the next week, I should stop feeling like I'm going to vomit all day and be in pain at night. Hooray!

Work v busy and I am working every day at the moment (don't normally have to go in on Fridays but am doing so almost all the time now grr, also means I have to pay the nanny extra but don't get paid extra myself) and then dh is away for another 2 weeks so it's going to be very manic....roll on 6th October!

batters - hope dd is sleeping better
ureb - glad you have a chance to try and sort things out via the diet.
marina - thought of you this weekend reading J Coe's article on Hitchcock in one of the Sundays!

and www, I briefly caught your SAHM thread. You do realise you are suffering from 'prospect of no-contract-itis'? Happens to the best of the self employed you know .

right must get on and pretend to be wifely

(ps am feeling v proud today - little ds got man of the match in football practice. He tries ever so hard and loves it but is thin and wiry and a lot of the other kids are big and very good and I feel so much warmth for the coaches who have obviously decided to award those who try as well as those who are good !)

foxinsocks · 11/09/2008 21:07

oh and I have done no exercise for months now . Have been blaming my stomach. I walked to Waterloo yesterday rather than going on the bus and when I sat down on the train, I realised I was sweating (tis only a 20 minute fast walk). Must do better!

VersdeSociete · 11/09/2008 21:45

Oh thanks, snaf - it eventually made me feel sort of fried and fishy....in a bad way.
I realise I haven't been doing any of the creams, must get on to those.
BUT: walked about another hour to and from swimming pool with DCs and then flapped about energetically preventing DD from drowning herself.
Anyone else find they walk a lot if home with kids, struggle to walk much when working?

TheDuchessOfNork · 11/09/2008 21:49

Good - 40 minutes of almost continuous, child-free swimming. Body scrub, handcream, moisturiser with SPF, lots of water, sensible food.

Bad - been weepy all day as wretched period returns, they seem to get worse after every pregnancy. AIBU to think that 10 weeks between lochia ending and period starting is not nearly a long enough break? Harrumph.

Badder - went to bed in the small hours.

No time to read thread, must crack on with some work or it'll be another stupidly late night.

moonshine · 11/09/2008 22:42

That chilli sounds yum. My repertoire has narrowed enormously since trying to lose some pounds as I don't trust myself with lots of food atm. I know I'm on safe ground with chicken, prawns and veg (although I do lust after WWW's daily menu, especially the cheeses).

VdS - that's the dichotomy with working for me - in theory more freedom to get about without a small child attached to my leg but little real time available for 'adult' walking, so end up doing far less daily exercise. Very frustrating.

JJ - I do try to take the pills every day (but tbh forgot an awful lot in the first 2 months) and am more diligent now that they seem to be helping. I am in my red-mist week now but wasn't really sure as haven't felt murderous (apart from, as so nicely expressed by WWW, the usual anger at the mundanity/frustration of rl).

Did manage to get to the gym this morning (there was a huge queue at 7am )) despite dcs both waking up in the night, and avoided all the bad things at the work buffet at lunchtime. Even managed to cream myself and wore my tight jeans (loosened from a day's wear but still producing a very attractive doughy muffin-top). No booze for 5th day in row and I will go to the gym tomorrow again so that I can indulge in a glass or 2 of wine.

Will now retire to bed with book - ut my weekend has officially started - hooray!

arfishy · 12/09/2008 01:32

Hello all. Well another day of gym, patented zero cal soup etc etc. I am bored catatonic.

No wine for 8 days but will have some on Saturday or I think I'll just snap and eat a deep fried battered pig in pastry or something.

I have worked out I am burning 1800 calories per week in the gym. I have weighed myself on 3 scales. The gym ones say I have lost 2 kg (4.4lb), the home ones say I have gained a kilo (2.2lb) and the wii-fit says I have lost 0.8kg whilst simultaneously screaming what a fatty I am. FFS.

Ignoring my spurious weight-loss claims, on the plus side spring is here. Which means I'll have to resist the urge to pour wine spritzers and sit in the garden in the sunshine reading an imported copy of OK! Home and Garden.

All this talk of the 11+ (hope it's all going well btw) reminded me that I took the 13+. Probably the only girl in the history of Common Entrance. Thanks mum .

foothesnoo · 12/09/2008 10:34

Have been ill all week so just checking in now. Can tick off everything on the bootcamp list this week, except the happy one?.. Am feeling v low and a bit weepy too ? not pmt related at all, more like run-down-ness and sorry for self-ness

Went to doctors and have been advised that I don?t have an infection of any sort ? just a tenacious virus. I need to get lots of rest (laughs in hollow fashion) and eat well, drink plenty etc. I do think I eat pretty well anyway ? lots of veg, water etc, so think I could possibly to with some immune system boosting vits ? anyone recommend, other than Echinacea?

V impressed with all of you exercising. Have done v little apart from walking.

All you slow cooker users ? I like the idea of slow cookers but always think they are more useful for meat eating households ? do you cook lots of veggie stuff in yours? LOVE the idea of coming home to something ready prepared!

Anniemac ? those trousers sound gorgeous. I would love to have an Audrey Hepburnish high waisty cigarette pant look with a crisp white tucked-in shirt? sadly am apple shaped and it?s the least flattering style for me! You always sound incredibly stylish.

www I saw your SAH thread but didn?t have time to post earlier in the week (work manic, bed early every night). I had a few months off between jobs last year and really loved it but what was interesting was seeing how much extra time I REALLY had with the kids. I have always dropped off three days a week anyway so had an extra couple of mornings with them. In the afternoons was lovely to pick them up every day (I usually only do one) but often they had activities/ friends over or we went to the park and they ran off with their friends, or we chatted for half an hour while they had a snack after school but then amused themselves/ each other while I got supper ready. I think what I realised was the impact of working is more on me than on them ? the juggling/ tiredness and always trying to keep on top of things (and am feeling it at the moment ? I feel stretched very thin). I was definitely ready to return when I went back. Ideally I would love to do just three days but, like made the choice of full time so that I could keep working at the same level and retain the flexibility that comes with that.

JJ · 12/09/2008 11:46

Wow, everyone has been doing so well. Foo, I hope you have a chance to get some rest. I had dessert after breakfast this morning, am trying not to think "Well, that's today blown then, might as well eat more cookies". And my return key isn't working on Mumsnet at the moment. I think it's something I did, but I can't bare to go on without having paragraphs. arrgggh. Anniemac, thanks for the info on the vitamins!

JJ · 12/09/2008 11:50

I can't bear, not bare! Don't worry, I'll be doing no baring of anything whether or not I manage to fix my return key.

foothesnoo · 12/09/2008 12:02

JJ will post lentil shepherds pie recipe when I have a min.

WideWebWitch · 12/09/2008 13:46

Hello,
Sorry for all who are feeling poorly. Impressed by the gymming.

I have walked about an hour today but am eating something really evil on many many levels.

It is a chunky peanut kitkat, which I know to be wrong on aesthetic, moral and health grounds.

Lentil hotpot for JJ
Cook 250g brown lentils until soft. Meanwhile chop a red onion and soften in oil.
Add teaspoon each of basil and oregano, plus 2 chopped carrots and a pepper, cook for 5 mins. Add some mushrooms, cook for another 5 mins.

Then add either a glass of red wine or half a pint of veg stock. Reduce liquid down to about half.

Add in cooked lentils, a tin of tomatoes and some shoyu and pepper to taste. Add a bit more stock if it looks too dry. Simmer with the lid on for 30 mins. I sometimes add in a tin of kidney bans or baked beans ? kids like both.

Wack it in a casserole dish, top with mashed potato and grated cheese. Cook at about 160 for 20-30 mins.

bundle · 12/09/2008 16:08

rubbish on alcohol here too and have just restocked cava to take away pain of -eek- camping tomorrow night (dh's friend's 40th)

ate just what i wanted for lunch - jalapenos stuffed with cheese and chilli dip plus some nachos with guacamole/salsa. felt strangely unsated yet full

bought mason/dixon knitting book to cheer me up. think it's worked...

suzywong · 12/09/2008 16:09
