New thread. Welcome back everyone. It's taken a while to get through the last due to how busy the advent threads have been.

All the holiday releases are coming out now and Black Friday is looming. So take a seat and buckle up. 😊

I could do with some recommendations on under eye corrector, concealer and general eye prep before make up, if anyone has the time to help me. I’m dealing with a couple of new problems - my eyes are now quite sensitive so if I persist in using a product that irritates them, it can take an hour for them to calm down again, and the skin under my eyes, despite being fed regularly with creams, tries to pretend it is starving to death at any social engagement.

Clearly the solution to the first one is to stop wearing the Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser (which makes me rather sad because it’s lovely), but are crepey under eyes at 41 just the way it is now? Not entirely helped by losing 80lbs.

This is a bit of a plea for help. The rest of my make up looked really nice but the whole eye area looked… not good.

I am sorry to hear of your woes. Is it possible to avoid wearing makeup around the eye area for at least a week to let your eyes rest?

If you can't narrow down the products that irritate your eye, use unfragranced and uncoloured products until it calms down for a week, Reintroduce one product at a time, even makeup. Sanitise all eye makeup. Bin old mascara and liquid eyeliner as you can't sanitise those, just in case those are the culprits.

For eye prep, the general advice is to hydrate as much as possible.

For undereyes, less is more if you have fine lines. Don't be afraid to use a darker corrector if your undereye darkness is much darker than the average for your skintone. If you know the undertones of that darkness it is easier to pick a corrector, as you want to pick something opposite in the colour wheel. Correct first to make the undertones more skin-like, then a thin layer of concealer or foundation to blend with the rest of your makeup. Too-light concealer can re-emphasise the darkness.

Little bit of an essay, hope that helps!

@DidILeaveTheGasOn I had a similar issue several months back. I used La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume for a couple of weeks and it cleared up the irritation. During that time, I also used barely any concealer under my eyes, just the tiniest amount in selected place to deal with any major dark under eye.
In terms of crepey under eye, I found that using a very lightly dampened beauty blender on top of my concealer helps. Then throughout the day (as I work in a very warm office) I dampened again either using a face mist or a little water dabbed directly on the area.

But yes I have come to the conclusion that if you have fine lines and you’re going to wear make up, they are going to be more prominent. Verses a friend of mine who only uses skincare and no make up, and looks far fresher faced than me (though I look good from a distance 🤣)

I recently bought this https://www.spacenk.com/uk/makeup/complexion/concealer/face-flex-correct-instant-under-eye-brightener-MUK200067996.html

It might be the best concealer I've tried on my 50 year old eyes. I don't even need to powder it down really. They also do a regular concealer in many shades which I haven't tried but assume is probably very good too. I'm not sure I would need to also get the regular one as the lightest shade of this works perfectly for me.

I tested out some other stuff in store this weekend and was really impressed with the blush and other products. Just waiting on a 20% event or gwp and I'm going to get some more stuff from the brand.

Is it fine lines, dryness, dark circles or bags that are the main issue?

Edit; sorry I just read again and see its crepey skin. Less is definitely more in that case. I have just gone back to a (very) old faithful, YSL touche eclat. It used to just be in one very light shade when it first came out so everyone was walking around like a reverse panda, but there are quite a few shade to choose from now, and the formula is very light. With the Trinny eye cream underneath, it works really well for me. I also had a blepheroplasty too, that definitely helped.

I have very sensitive eyes too and concealer always used to make them run. I've narrowed it down to a few products which don't cause any irritation:

Bobbi brown colour corrector stick - under eyes, before foundation. Lovely and creamy and just evens out the colour.

bobbi brown serum concealer - all round the under eye & eyelid as a base for eyeshadow - good coverage, hydrating, great colour match for me and doesn't irritate at all

new Lisa Eldridge concealer - this is nice and very glowy. The colour I bought is too light, so I use a tiny bit around the outer under eye to brighten. It's very moisturising, like the Bobbi brown - lots of skincare ingredients in though so I suppose it might depend what your skin likes.

I've also lost a lot of weight so my under eyes are my worst area - I think it's really hard to avoid the hollowing. I find a full on eye cream is too much under makeup but I have two that are basically just moisture - Sisley black rose (extortionate) and laneige water bank (reasonably priced). They help a little if my undereyes are very dry but if I have the time the best thing I've found are patchology chilled on ice eye gels. They really tighten things up and moisturise well. If I'm going out in the evening I put them on during the day and my eyes look much better later.

user593 · 18/10/2026 08:09

@DidILeaveTheGasOn This is perhaps not particularly helpful but I really think less is more when you’re in your 40s. If I ever try to do anything complicated around my eyes (which can also be sensitive at times, and I’ve lost 120lbs so everything’s a bit wrinkly!) I find it looks worse. I’d really focus on prep (good day/ night eye cream and moisturiser) and try and find something to replace the LM if that’s not working for you (have you tried Lisa Eldridge Skin Enhancing Tint?).

I’ve just realised in the last few months despite my beautician telling me for a year I have dry skin (which I struggled to believe as I’ve suffered terribly with my skin for decades and been combo/ oily all my life) that I really can’t over moisturise it. It just seems to love it all, and that is also helping with the fine lines.

user593 · 18/10/2026 08:12

Oh, also I really love the Beauty of Joseon eye patches. They’re very reasonably priced too. The Patchology pp has mentioned are good too.

On frivolities, I support the Josephine Tey quote:

…She would fritter it away, of course, in small unimportances; so that in the end she would not know what she had done with it; but perhaps a series of small satisfactions scattered like sequins over the texture of everyday life was of greater worth than the academic satisfaction of owning a collection of fine objects at the back of a drawer.

Just catching up on the thread and came across this. Absolutely wonderful! Brilliantly captures my life, or at least the life I want to lead! Thank you

LoveLabradors · 18/10/2026 08:45

@JasmineMilkTea that was very useful! @OvaHere I am going to look at that next time I’m in SNK. My eyes are my worst part, they look tired and it’s the only area I have crepey skin and wrinkles (the lifetime bane of oily skin has finally delivered something good 😆, but I still have delightful chin acne to enjoy 🙄), they are also increasingly sensitive with age as well. I’m using uklash serum at the moment, I've not used one with prostaglandins before and i really am questioning whether it is worsening around eyes or if I am simply being paranoid.
I love this thread for all the helpful tips and product recommendations! Whilst I probably spend more than I should on fripperies (looking @JoRaRaRa for this weeks Chanel unnecessary purchases 😁) it also stops me wasting money on poor products.

DidILeaveTheGasOn · 18/10/2026 08:56

Good morning and thank you all so much, I really appreciate the advice and product recommendations. I’ve got a quiet afternoon ahead so I shall sit down and do a bit of shopping and weed out the products in my dressing table that make my eyes sting - I think at the moment the main culprit is Laura Mercier but I could do with washing all of my brushes and sponges, and I think the note about tossing old mascara is a good one as well.
Thank you guys, you’re a lovely bunch!

Beautyfox · 18/10/2026 09:19

@LoveLabradors i really like tata harper brightening eye serum it’s like a cross between touche eclair and a serum. It’s very light which is why I like it. I tend to use a heavier eye serum of a night.

apologies I think it was @DidILeaveTheGasOn sorry. I have t had coffee yet.

Have you tried Trinny BFF for eyes? It’s a concealer serum and very hydrating

user7172 · 18/10/2026 10:12

Hi everyone, checking in from a very wet Seoul!! What to do when jet lagged on a very wet day but shop!! Thanks @IlovePondfor the recommendations. Someone else recommended a Lisa Eldridge video on You Tube for Korean skincare which was fab ( sorry can’t remember who that was!) and I got quite the haul! Ds 17 and I have already used a face mask this afternoon 🤣. Loved the fwee lip and blush pots in Daiso for £1.30 each and got some VT RLE reeder shots to try. Prices are so reasonable here, and there is an overwhelming choice. We got to Olive Young early so it wasn’t busy and assistants so helpful. My case is definitely bulging and we’ve got trains, planes and automobiles to go so buying at the beginning of our trip maybe not the most sensible but the weather has been biblical so really no option but to shop!!
Loved the stories on Sephora and the hauls.

Every person that I talked to who has the Oura ring is loving theirs, it cemented it for me that it would be worth an investment sometime in future (when we’re done doing the house up!). If Boots are doing any discounts on those during the BF sales - I’d say go for it unless it’s only your DH who wants one 😅

Ive also been eyeing the oura ring but dont want to spend £400. But would happily spend on beauty stuff to put in my wardrobe and forget about 🤣
Ive lost my fitbit sense charger in August and know i could just replace it but going to treat myself to the ring. Ive decided to wait for Black Friday offers now. 🥰
I checked my size in John Lewis awhile ago.

DidILeaveTheGasOn · 18/10/2026 11:24

@Beautyfox I ordered some sets for DD for Christmas and the Sculpted By Aimee GWP of a free brush bauble was added to my order twice - one of those was free, and the other one I was charged £10 for. I didn't add either of them, they added automatically.
I emailed them to ask if they could issue store credit for £10, or replace the second 'free' brush with something else. I got quite a snotty email back saying they can't replace the brush with anything else but as a 'gesture of goodwill' they are willing to refund £10 'on this occasion'.
What the chuff. How can it be a gesture of goodwill if they're refunding me for something I didn't add to my basket in the first place?
I have been in customer-facing roles for a hundred years (it feels like) and I would never. Christ on a bike. That may be my first and last order.

Doglover73 · 18/10/2026 11:28

@OvaHere ive got my eye on this as well. Theres also a new lisa eldridge concealer thats getting a lot of praise. Like you waiting for a great gwp. Incase it ends up stuffed in drawer as wrong shade. They are spendy but just pointless spending on other things and looking fab if foundation/ concealer shade is off. 🥰

Edited to add i also have loads of eye patches so need to dig them out and start using. Avoiding everything atm except a bit of eye cream am and pm due to perioral dermatitis. Its hard not to use anything except the antibiotic cream I got online. My skin is looking better, feels a bit dry but ill sort that in time. 🥰
So I need to focus on my eyes so Im at least using some of my stash, just not overdo it 🥰
Advice on here is invaluable. Trust it more than the majority online. 🥰

DidILeaveTheGasOn · 18/10/2026 11:30

Revision to my rant a few minutes ago: Sculpted By Aimee came back to me and said, the free brush bauble is a one-per-order GWP but they're going to refund the £10 charged and let me keep both brushes. One for me, one for DD. So, actually, I was being a crotchety grumpy brat and they were being pretty nice!

I have sent them an apology for being a grumpy sod and a thank you. Humble pie for me!

Doglover73 · 18/10/2026 11:38

My skins combo but dehydrated but not dry.

Different atm as using nothing due to the perioral issue. If I use anything too rich that causes issues as well.
Minefield. And expensive at times. 🤣

NC543210 · 18/10/2026 12:16

Those of you who struggle with dry, crepey under eye skin and dark circles etc.
Have you tried polynucleotides. They're fabulous. I've not used them myself as I'm blessed with my eyes it's the rest of my face that needs support haha
But I have many, many clients who have them and come back every 12 to 18 months for more.

Be picky with what product you have though as some are naff!

SheilaFentiman · 18/10/2026 12:17

@DidILeaveTheGasOn oh I’m actually v glad to hear that as they come across as such a nice company. I’m contemplating gifting myself the personalised brush set 🥳

DidILeaveTheGasOn · 18/10/2026 12:38

Yes I'm pleased too. Their initial email offering the goodwill gesture didn't say they'd let me keep the second brush, someone perhaps more caffeinated sent another email to clarify that I could keep it which is really nice. So maybe we've discovered a way to get multiple free brushes. I don't know, it feels mean now.

Speaking of brushes, off to round them all up and give them a bath!

Did you go for the rosex cream for pd?
I'm considering it after it was discussed before, just wasn't sure in taking the plunge! Is it helping?

Doglover73 · 18/10/2026 14:47

@HappyBirds21
Yes it arrived on Fri. Started using straight away. Definitely looking less red. I watched a video by Dr Shereene Irdriss on youtube about it and she said you need a good 2 to 3 weeks before starting using other stuff for the inflammation to really settle down or it can just trigger it all again. Cost £24 from an online pharmacy. I sent pic of the side of my mouth. Not massively red but looks slightly irritated. I have had a diagnosis of rosacea 1 in the past and used soolantra. I also thought it was just my rosacea flaring up.

Im finding it hard as only using water and the rosex generally. Ive used the gleanser at night but very lightly. My skin feels a touch dry but looks better. I was using creams that were too rich as well. 🤦‍♂️🙃

Ive also realised that the redness on my neck may not actually be sun damage. Id always thought so as im fair although i have avoided the sun for 30 years but was thinking in my teens, early twenties. I think it may just be mainly damaged barrier as have used actives to try to repair the sun damage. 🤔🫣🙄🤣
Its looking a bit better already.

Ive not used any lip balms either. Really hard and I have loads.
I need to thoroughly clean all my brushes before using again.
And avoid avoid avoid fragrance in skincare going forward. I knew my skin didnt like rose or fruit fragrances citrus, papaya, etc but need to bear it in mind. More prone to it once youve had it so ill always keep the cream for when my skin feels like its starting again to nip it in the bud.
I also need to buy a fluoride free toothpaste whilst its active as it can make it worse.

You can take antibiotics orally depending how bad it is. Compared to photos online mine is mild, although im very conscious of it and i did wear make up to cover it, always.

I chose the cream over the gel as the gel is more drying.

Hope this helps at least a bit 🤣❤️

The money ive spent on stuff trying to fix it is insane but 🥰

Id definitely recommend it. 🥰
Although ofcourse see gp if needed but it seems that generally, as mentioned on here, gps just give steroid cream which makes it better then worse as theres a bounce back.
Good luck
